mdt2fwui.dll is a legacy Microsoft Design Tools Framework library, not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the older Microsoft application that originally installed it, rather than downloading the DLL separately.
Microsoft documentation associates this file family with Office 2000, Access 2000, Visual Studio 6-era Design Tools components, and possibly SQL Server 2000 shared components. Office 2000 Service Pack 3 file documentation explicitly lists Mdt2fwui.dll among its files.
The exact program that needs the file cannot be identified from the filename alone. It may be an old Microsoft application, a database tool, or another program that depends on a shared Microsoft component.

- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library mdt2fwui.dll.”
- “mdt2fwui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages can have different causes. “The specified module could not be found” may mean that a dependency of mdt2fwui.dll is missing, not necessarily that the named file itself has disappeared.

The exact path varies by product, language, and installation type.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application named in the error
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
This is the most likely and most authoritative solution. A legacy application setup can restore the correct file, related dependencies, registry entries, and matching architecture together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIdentify the parent application
- Close the error message.
- Look at its title bar and text for the program name.
- If the error appears when you open a shortcut, right-click that shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target. The executable path usually identifies the application.
- Open File Explorer and browse to that application’s installation directory.
- Look for the program’s setup file, installation media, or an entry in Control Panel.
To check installed programs:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Look for Microsoft Office, Access, Visual Studio, SQL Server components, or the application that displays the error.
- Select the relevant entry.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify if the option is available.
- Follow the setup wizard and restart Windows when it finishes.
On Windows 11, you can also open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Select the application and look for Modify, Repair, or Uninstall. Legacy Office setup often does not provide the same modern repair options, so its original installer or Control Panel may be required.
If repair is unavailable
Use the original licensed installation CD, mounted installation image, network installer, or other trustworthy installation media.
- Insert or mount the installation media.
- Open it in File Explorer.
- Run
Setup.exe. - Choose Repair if offered.
- If repair is not offered, uninstall the damaged application first only if you have the installation media and product information needed to reinstall it.
- Install the application again.
- Start the application and check whether the error returns.
If the application starts normally afterward, the repair worked. If the same message appears, continue with the update and compatibility steps below instead of copying a random DLL into a Windows folder.
Fix 2: Restore the correct Office 2000 or Design Tools updates
Time needed: 30–90 minutes
If the affected program is Office 2000, Access 2000, or a related database component, the missing file may belong to the shared Design Tools installation rather than to a standalone program.

The original Office CD may also be required during setup. Install the updates in the correct order:
- Confirm that the installed product is Office 2000 or a related Office 2000 component.
- Keep the original Office installation media available.
- Install Office 2000 SR1a if it is not already installed.
- Restart Windows if setup requests it.
- Install Office 2000 SP3, commonly identified as
O2ksp3.exe, if you have a legitimate copy of the package. - If you use the Office 2000 SR1 Multilanguage Pack, install the corresponding SP3 package where applicable.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the program that previously displayed the error.
Do not assume that a modern Microsoft 365 installer can restore an Office 2000 component. These are different product generations.
Microsoft’s old download pages and update infrastructure may no longer provide a working installer. Use original licensed media or a trustworthy archival source only where legally and technically appropriate. Do not substitute an isolated DLL from a download site for the complete service pack or product installation.
If Office setup reports that a required source file cannot be found, browse to the original installation CD or installation folder when prompted. If you cannot provide the required source, cancel the operation and locate the correct installation media rather than choosing unrelated files.

Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may have quarantined the file, particularly if an old application directory is being scanned. A quarantine entry does not prove that the file is safe, so verify the installation before restoring anything.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
mdt2fwui.dllor the old application. - Read the detection details and file path.
- If the file came from a licensed Microsoft installation and the surrounding installation is trustworthy, follow Windows Security’s Restore or Allow controls only after you understand the detection.
- If the detection remains active, do not force the file back into place.
- Update security intelligence and run a full scan.
- Reinstall the parent application from clean, trusted media instead.
If another antivirus product is installed, open its quarantine or detection history and perform the same checks. A file restored from quarantine may immediately be removed again if the underlying installation is damaged or the detection is valid.
Fix 4: Check the application architecture and installation path
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
mdt2fwui.dll is normally associated with a 32-bit legacy component. A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows must use the matching 32-bit version of its application files and dependencies.
Do not copy the file into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. Despite their names, these folders serve different architecture roles on 64-bit Windows, and indiscriminate copying can create version conflicts.

- Right-click the shortcut for the failing application.
- Select Properties and open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Check whether
mdt2fwui.dllis expected in that application directory or in a Microsoft shared component directory. - Check whether the application itself is an older 32-bit program.
- Repair or reinstall the complete application using its installer.
A verified copy recovered from the original installation media may sometimes be placed back into the original product directory, but this is a narrow recovery action. It is not a reason to download the file separately or place it in a system directory.
If the error changes from “missing” to “entry point not found,” the installed DLL and the application may be from mismatched releases. Reinstall the complete parent product and its appropriate update instead of mixing files from different versions.
Fix 5: Run DISM and System File Checker for Windows corruption
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
SFC and DISM are useful when protected Windows components are damaged. They are not expected to restore an application DLL that never belonged to the Windows component store, so treat this as a secondary check for mdt2fwui.dll.
- Save your work and close open programs.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Recommended Free Tools
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
text
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Try the affected program again.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, test the application after restarting. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the missing DLL is probably an application-component problem. If DISM or SFC reports that it could not complete, note the message and return to repairing the parent application.
Repeating these commands without knowing what changed is unlikely to restore a legacy Microsoft application file. If you want a guided scan to identify broader Windows repair issues, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the specific legacy application remains the definitive fix for this DLL.
Fix 6: Install pending Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus download time
Windows Update will not normally supply this old Microsoft Design Tools file, but current system updates can resolve general compatibility and servicing problems.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further ordinary updates are offered.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Test the affected application afterward. If only mdt2fwui.dll remains missing, repair or reinstall the legacy product rather than expecting Windows Update to add it.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the error began with a hardware or application change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A display, storage, printer, or other driver is not an evidence-based first-line explanation for this particular filename. Driver work is appropriate only if the error began after a hardware change, a driver installation, or a broader system failure.
To check a device:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, Printers, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider, date, and status.
- Use Update Driver only when a current driver is available from the device manufacturer.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, use Roll Back Driver if that button is available.
- Restart Windows and test the original application.
Do not install a driver merely because a DLL-indexing page recommends one. Visual C++ redistributables, DirectX installers, and .NET repair are also not established first-line fixes for mdt2fwui.dll.
Manually checking dozens of hardware pages can make it difficult to know which change helped. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues and show what needs attention, while the full version performs driver installation; this remains optional, and it will not replace repairing the legacy Microsoft application that owns the DLL.

Time needed: 20–45 minutes
System Restore can help when an application and its shared components worked recently and a suitable restore point exists. It is not a substitute for installation media and may remove applications or updates installed after the selected point.

If the application still fails, use its installer to repair it. If many unrelated files have disappeared, investigate disk errors or malware instead of repeatedly restoring the same point.
Do not run regsvr32 routinely
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
There is no verified evidence that mdt2fwui.dll is a COM server that requires registration. Running a command such as the following may simply produce an error:
regsvr32 mdt2fwui.dll
Do not use generic /u or /i commands copied from DLL websites. If the application installer specifically instructs you to register a component, use the installer’s documented command and architecture. Otherwise, repair or reinstall the parent application.
Causes of an mdt2fwui.dll error
The most likely causes are:
- A legacy Office, Access, Visual Studio, or SQL Server component was removed or damaged.
- A shared Design Tools component was removed when another Microsoft product was uninstalled.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- The application’s files or dependencies are corrupted.
- A 32-bit application is being paired with incompatible files.
- Windows reports a missing dependency as “module could not be found.”
- Disk damage or malware removed multiple unrelated files.
The filename alone does not prove which product installed it. Historical file records also contain different version information, so a reported version should not be treated as a universal current version or a replacement target.
What to do if the original product is unavailable
If you no longer have the Office, Access, Visual Studio, or SQL Server installation media:
- Identify the exact executable requesting the file.
- Check Control Panel > Programs and Features for the parent product.
- Look in the application’s installation directory and setup logs.
- Check Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and reviewing Windows Logs > Application around the failure time.
- Check antivirus history.
- Contact the organization or administrator that supplied the licensed software if it is business software.
- Obtain legitimate original media or a supported replacement application.
- Avoid isolated DLL downloads and unofficial installers.
Older Microsoft products may have installer, activation, security, or compatibility problems on modern Windows even after the missing file is restored. If the original program cannot be recovered safely, replacing it with a supported version may be the responsible resolution.
FAQ
Is mdt2fwui.dll part of Windows?
No evidence identifies it as a normal protected Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL. It is associated with the legacy Microsoft Design Tools component family.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which Microsoft products used it?
Historical Microsoft records associate the file with Office 2000 shared Design Tools components, Access 2000, Visual Studio 6-era files, and possibly SQL Server 2000-era shared components. The filename alone cannot identify the exact installing product.
Should I download mdt2fwui.dll from a DLL website?
No. An isolated download may contain malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture, and it may not include the dependency that is actually missing. Restore the file through the original application installer or trusted Microsoft installation media.
Should I place it in System32 or SysWOW64?
No, not as a routine fix. Those folders have different architecture meanings on 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit legacy application should receive its matching files through its own installer and expected application or shared-component directory.
Will regsvr32 fix it?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for DLL registration, not for replacing missing application files. There is no verified reason to register this file routinely.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does the error say the module could not be found when the DLL exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency of mdt2fwui.dll. Repairing the complete parent application is safer than guessing which dependency to copy.
Will SFC or DISM restore it?
Usually not. They repair protected Windows components, while mdt2fwui.dll is associated with an old Microsoft application component. Run them as secondary checks, then repair the application that requested the file.
