Keep MediaMTX when you need its routing, protocol conversion, forwarding, or stream-serving features. The right alternative depends on whether you want a command-line encoder, visual production software, hosted playback, or dedicated hardware.
What MediaMTX does—and when you can skip it
MediaMTX describes itself as a ready-to-use media server and proxy/router. It can publish, read, proxy, record, and play back real-time streams, convert between protocols, and serve streams. Those functions matter when a workflow has multiple sources or destinations; they are not necessary just to repeat one local file to an encoder destination. MediaMTX introduction
For a single file, FFmpeg is a potential simpler starting point. MediaMTX documents an indefinite loop command that publishes to a local MediaMTX RTMP listener:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream
This is an example of FFmpeg sending a loop to MediaMTX at localhost; it is not a verified direct-to-YouTube command. If you remove MediaMTX, you still need a compatible publishing destination and encoder configuration. MediaMTX: Publish with FFmpeg

YouTube’s encoder guidance names Gyre as a cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded streaming tool and AJA HELO Plus as a standalone encoder with optional scheduled playback to YouTube Live. Restream’s help center lists a feature for scheduling prerecorded uploads. These options occupy different workflow layers from MediaMTX, and the cited sources do not provide controlled performance comparisons or current prices. 2. FFmpeg: a local or server command
Use FFmpeg if you are comfortable setting up a command, arranging a compatible publishing destination, and supervising the process. It provides fine-grained command-line control, but a machine running the process and a reliable outbound connection must remain available. The documented MediaMTX command demonstrates looping and publishing to a MediaMTX RTMP path; do not treat its localhost destination as YouTube’s ingest URL.

3. OBS Studio: visual production
OBS is a better workflow fit when the stream needs scenes, overlays, or interactive production controls. MediaMTX publishes instructions for OBS-to-MediaMTX, and YouTube lists encoder software as a way to stream. The sources cited here do not establish OBS as an unattended 24/7 loop service, so validate the specific playback and recovery behavior you need before relying on it. 4. Gyre or Restream: hosted scheduling and playback
Gyre is explicitly listed by YouTube for cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. Restream’s help center documents scheduling prerecorded videos to go live automatically, but the cited material does not confirm an endless loop mode. Check current feature descriptions and terms before choosing either for continuous playback; no current prices or plan terms are established by the cited pages.

5. AJA HELO Plus: a dedicated appliance
YouTube describes AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder and says optional PlayToStream functionality schedules prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a hardware-oriented route rather than a software media-server replacement. Confirm the required configuration and current availability before buying for this particular workflow.
How to choose: replace the loop or keep the server?
- One video or playlist, no routing needs: Choose a looping encoder or hosted prerecorded-streaming service. MediaMTX may be unnecessary if nothing needs to convert protocols, branch to multiple destinations, or serve viewers.
- Multiple paths, protocol conversion, or forwarding: Keep MediaMTX and change only the publishing or automation component if that is the part causing friction. MediaMTX documents forwarding streams and server functions. MediaMTX: Forward streams
- Scenes and live production controls: Consider OBS as the production interface, with a separate plan for how prerecorded playback and unattended operation will work.
- Want no computer running locally: Consider a cloud service such as StreamNeo or a hosted option listed for prerecorded streaming. A hardware encoder is another route if a dedicated local appliance suits your setup.
Set up a YouTube stream safely
- Get the current ingest details in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain that the server URL and stream key are entered into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not post or share it, and replace it if exposed. YouTube encoder setup
- Configure the selected tool for that destination. For a MediaMTX forwarding setup, use the current RTMPS endpoint and stream key from YouTube rather than assuming a sample endpoint will remain current. MediaMTX notes that the YouTube ingest endpoint may change, so check its current forwarding instructions. MediaMTX forwarding instructions
- Include both video and audio when using the documented MediaMTX-to-YouTube forwarding setup. MediaMTX warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams in that setup. Check that the file contains an audio track or configure an audio source.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Confirm that playback starts, audio and video are present, and the intended loop continues. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and checking local archive integrity. YouTube: Streaming tips
Plan bandwidth, archives, and long-running playback
Leave upload bandwidth headroom
YouTube recommends outbound capacity equal to the primary stream bitrate plus the backup stream bitrate, with an additional 20% headroom. Apply that recommendation to the actual bitrate settings and any backup stream you use; a connection that only matches the primary stream rate may not leave the recommended margin. Check upload stability at the streaming location, not just the advertised plan speed.

Do not rely on a very long live archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on very long streams. If the replay matters, retain a separate local recording and verify that recording opens and plays correctly. YouTube: Archive live streams · YouTube: Turn on DVR on live streams
Troubleshooting common failures
- The FFmpeg example does not reach YouTube: Its documented destination is
rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream, a local MediaMTX listener. Configure an appropriate YouTube publishing workflow rather than copying that destination unchanged. - YouTube does not accept the incoming stream: Confirm the current server URL and stream key in YouTube Studio, check for a mistyped key, and re-check the ingest endpoint in the current MediaMTX forwarding documentation.
- The MediaMTX forwarding stream is rejected despite video being present: Check for an audio track. The documented forwarding setup requires both audio and video; video-only streams can be silently rejected.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: Check actual upload capacity against the primary and backup bitrates plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test failover rather than assuming it will work.
- The archive is missing or viewers cannot rewind far enough: Very long streams may exceed YouTube’s automatic archive capture conditions, and DVR may be limited. Keep an independent recording if the archive is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or create a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
