You can use MediaMTX on a Raspberry Pi to relay a camera feed to YouTube Live: configure a camera source, add YouTube’s current RTMPS URL and stream key as a forwarding destination, and confirm the outgoing stream has both video and audio. That builds a live relay, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation. Power, network stability, restarts, heat, YouTube’s current rules, and tested recovery all matter.
How the Raspberry Pi-to-YouTube signal path works
MediaMTX is a media server and proxy that routes streams between protocols and can forward them to other servers. In this setup, a Raspberry Pi camera—or another source that can publish a compatible stream—feeds MediaMTX on the Pi. MediaMTX then sends the stream to the URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. For its native camera source, a MediaMTX configuration can define a path named cam with source: rpiCamera; the resulting local path is /cam.
MediaMTX also supports recording, replay, metrics, and performance monitoring. These capabilities help with stream management, but do not by themselves guarantee that the entire camera-to-YouTube path will recover from every fault.
Check Raspberry Pi, OS, and camera compatibility
MediaMTX’s Raspberry Pi camera guide lists Raspberry Pi OS Trixie and Bookworm, with 32-bit and 64-bit support. For a standalone binary, choose the build matching the OS architecture; the guide says to use arm64 for a 64-bit OS. It also documents a Raspberry Pi Docker image tagged 1-rpi, with additional privileges and device configuration needed for camera access. See the MediaMTX Raspberry Pi camera guide and confirm the current installation instructions before downloading.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not assume every camera is plug-and-play. Some cameras, including certain ArduCam products, require a custom libcamera and will not work with precompiled binaries or images; MediaMTX says those cases require compiling from source. Check your exact Pi board, OS, camera model, connector, and installation approach first. The Raspberry Pi documentation also describes ingesting output from rpicam-vid as an alternative to MediaMTX’s native rpiCamera source.
Configure the camera source and YouTube destination
- Install MediaMTX for your platform. Download the matching standalone build or follow the current Raspberry Pi Docker instructions. Preserve the example configuration file so you can edit the documented settings.
- Set up the source. For the native camera route, configure a path such as
camwithsource: rpiCamera. The camera guide documents settings for resolution, camera mode, and bitrate. Alternatively, publish a supported stream into MediaMTX, including from an externalrpicam-vidworkflow. - Get the destination from YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s settings and copy the current stream URL and stream key. YouTube says the RTMPS URL is shown in the Stream URL field in Stream settings; the key is copied from the same control room. Use the values shown for your stream rather than relying on an old endpoint copied from a guide.
- Configure forwarding in MediaMTX. The MediaMTX forwarding guide uses a
forwarddestination, with the stream key following the URL after#. Follow the current MediaMTX forwarding instructions for the exact configuration syntax in your installed version. Treat any sample hostname or certificate fingerprint in documentation as an example, not a universal current value. - Start the source and relay, then check YouTube. Confirm MediaMTX is receiving the local stream and YouTube Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming stream before relying on it.
Prefer RTMPS when available. YouTube describes it as RTMP over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the feed in transit, and recommends streaming with RTMPS in its encoder settings and bitrate guidance. If YouTube reports an SSL error, verify both the protocol and server address against Live Control Room; YouTube’s help guidance also suggests trying port 443 when appropriate.

Make sure the outgoing stream has audio
MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding guide warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. Check the actual outgoing feed for both audio and video, even if the camera preview looks correct. If the camera source has no audio, MediaMTX’s Raspberry Pi camera guide describes adding a USB microphone through a GStreamer and ALSA workflow. A USB microphone is only necessary when you need a separate audio input; it is not a universal requirement for every source.
Choose and test resolution, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, choosing settings the connection can sustain, and monitoring stream health while sending representative audio and video motion. Its current guidance accessed in 2026 gives the following H.264 bitrate ranges. These are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of a particular Raspberry Pi or MediaMTX setup.

| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate range |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps |
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. A codec being listed by YouTube does not mean every Raspberry Pi model and MediaMTX source can encode it in real time. Confirm what your chosen source and hardware actually produce, then test with enough stable upload capacity and monitor YouTube’s health indicators.
What “continuous” does—and does not—mean
The documented workflow explains how to forward a stream; it does not establish a maximum duration, an unlimited broadcast, or guaranteed 24/7 uptime for a particular Pi configuration. The available official guidance does not settle whether YouTube imposes a current maximum continuous-live duration or requires a scheduled restart for this exact setup. Check YouTube’s current stream-management rules and verify how your event behaves before planning around a long-running broadcast.

For a long-running installation, test the whole chain rather than just the first successful connection: restart the Pi, interrupt and restore the network, stop and restart the source, and observe whether MediaMTX and YouTube return to a healthy state. Arrange dependable power, cooling, network access, and a way to inspect logs and stream health. MediaMTX documents hot configuration reload, metrics, and performance monitoring, but these features are not proof of automatic end-to-end recovery after every outage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common interruptions
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Re-copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check the forwarding destination syntax, and confirm MediaMTX is receiving the local source. A stale example hostname can fail even if the rest of the configuration is correct.
- YouTube shows no stream or rejects it silently: Check that the outgoing feed contains both audio and video, not just a camera picture.
- RTMPS reports an SSL or connection error: Confirm you selected the current RTMPS server and protocol in Live Control Room. YouTube advises checking both and suggests port 443 when appropriate. Do not treat an old certificate fingerprint as a permanent setting.
- The picture pauses on a UDP-based path: Raspberry Pi’s documentation notes that insufficient UDP receive-buffer space can drop data and visibly interrupt video. It describes sysctl receive-buffer settings as a possible intervention and notes a configuration-file distinction on Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm. Apply that guidance only when the path uses UDP and the symptom fits; it is not a general cure for every interruption.
- The stream starts but becomes unstable: Test a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate within the applicable YouTube recommendation, check actual upload stability, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Also inspect the source and Pi for interruptions rather than assuming the forwarding server is the only possible cause.
- The relay does not return after a reboot or outage: Check the service’s startup configuration, MediaMTX logs, source availability, network connectivity, and YouTube health status. Test recovery on your installation; the documented features do not promise that every fault is automatically repaired.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded video live without leaving a Pi, laptop, or home connection running, StreamNeo is a different approach: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, rather than relaying a live camera feed. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is YouTube-only.
