The PiS2 is a homemade portable PlayStation 2 that pairs a real slimline PS2 motherboard with a Raspberry Pi 2. The Pi acts as a network file server, letting the console load games over Ethernet instead of relying on its DVD drive. It runs PS2 games on PS2 hardware, not through emulation.
What is the PiS2?
It is a custom portable console built around genuine PlayStation 2 hardware. A slimline PS2 motherboard handles the games, while a Raspberry Pi 2 supplies an SMB server: a way to share game files over a local network. Notebookcheck describes the build as a slimline PlayStation 2 motherboard combined with a Raspberry Pi 2 single-board computer (Notebookcheck’s PiS2 coverage).
The Raspberry Pi is therefore not the machine running the games. It provides the network storage service; the PS2 retrieves game data from it over Ethernet.
How does the Raspberry Pi 2 make the PS2 portable?
The PiS2 replaces disc-based loading with network loading. The Raspberry Pi 2 hosts the files through SMB, and the PS2 accesses them over an Ethernet connection. The project also uses Free McBoot, which boots modified software from an exploited PS2 memory card and enables the console to use this setup. This arrangement avoids carrying or fitting a DVD drive into the portable build, but it adds a network server and Ethernet link to the hardware. The PiS2’s portability comes from integrating the components into one custom system, not from the Raspberry Pi replacing the PS2.
Does the PiS2 use emulation?
No. The PiS2 runs games on real PS2 hardware, so it does not need to emulate the console. The Raspberry Pi 2 serves game files; it is not an emulator in this design.

OC3D reported the project’s claim that “99% of games” run at full speed with smooth FMV. That is a claim attributed to the project, not an independently verified compatibility test, so it should not be treated as a guarantee for every game.
How long does the PiS2 battery last?
OC3D reported approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes of operation without external power. The same 2019 report says the low-battery warning is triggered when voltage falls below 6.5 V, approximately 20 minutes before shutdown. These are reported figures for this project, not a general runtime expectation for other PS2 portables.

OC3D says development took several years and restarted in 2017 after a four-year gap. That is the publication’s account of the project timeline, rather than a detailed engineering changelog.

What to know before trying to recreate it
A recreation depends on bringing together compatible PS2 donor hardware, a Raspberry Pi 2, the network-loading setup, and a custom portable arrangement. The Pi 2 is an older board generation, so check the board’s condition and authenticity and confirm that it suits the intended configuration before buying. A slimline PS2 donor console or motherboard is also central to the design; enclosure, display, battery, and power integration are separate build challenges rather than plug-and-play features.
