Merriam-Webster acquired Quordle, the daily word game that asks players to solve four five-letter words at once. The acquisition became public around January 20, 2023, when the game moved to Merriam-Webster’s website; the financial terms were not disclosed. At the time, the company said it had no plans to put Quordle behind a paywall.
What is Quordle?
Quordle takes the familiar Wordle-style format—guess a five-letter word and use color feedback to identify correct or misplaced letters—and multiplies it across four boards. Each guess applies to all four puzzles, and the version described in contemporary coverage gave players nine guesses to solve them. Instead of concentrating on one answer, players have to weigh how a guess might help across several boards at once. Engadget’s acquisition report and TechRadar’s coverage describe the format.
That makes “Wordle clone” a recognizable shorthand, but not the whole story: Quordle uses a similar guessing-and-feedback idea while adding a substantially different scale and strategy. The label describes a game resemblance; it is not, by itself, a legal finding about copying.
When did Merriam-Webster acquire Quordle?
The acquisition was announced publicly around January 20, 2023. Quordle creator Freddie Meyer announced the deal, and the game’s standalone web presence moved to a Merriam-Webster address. The precise closing date and the assets covered by the transaction were not made public. Some contemporary reporting indicated that the purchase had taken place before the announcement, so January 2023 is best understood as the public announcement and migration period, not necessarily the exact date the deal closed. Why would a dictionary publisher buy a word game?
Quordle was a natural fit for Merriam-Webster’s language-focused brand and its existing Games & Quizzes offerings. It also brought an established audience to a product designed for repeat daily visits. Merriam-Webster described the game as a useful addition to its games lineup and pointed to its fan base, according to Game World Observer.
There is also a straightforward business inference: a popular free puzzle can draw recurring traffic and introduce players to other parts of a publisher’s site. That is a plausible benefit of the deal, not a publicly disclosed explanation of its financial rationale. The acquisition should be understood as the addition of a game and its audience, rather than evidence that Merriam-Webster bought a conventional game studio; reporting did not detail the deal structure.

Did Quordle stay free?
At the time of the acquisition announcement, Merriam-Webster said it had no plans to put Quordle behind a paywall. That was a launch-era statement, not a permanent guarantee about access, advertising, or future product changes. The 2023 reports do not establish the game’s present-day availability or current terms.

Merriam-Webster President Gregory Barlow told TechRadar that 29.7 million users had played Quordle 410 million times during the preceding six months. Those are company-provided figures reported by TechRadar, not independently audited audience measurements. They nevertheless help explain why the game could be attractive to a publisher looking for a recurring audience.

Part of a wider wave of game acquisitions
Quordle’s deal followed a period when viral web games drew interest from established media companies. The New York Times acquired Wordle in 2022, for a reported low-seven-figure sum, and Spotify acquired the music-guessing game Heardle that year. Quordle’s purchase price was not disclosed, so its deal cannot be compared financially with either one. The broader pattern is that a simple, repeatable game can be valuable not only as a game, but as a way to attract and retain an audience.
Nothing in the available acquisition coverage establishes that Quordle was an official Wordle product, that Merriam-Webster obtained Wordle rights, or that the deal involved a legal dispute with The New York Times. The careful description is that Quordle is a Wordle-inspired variant with its own four-board mechanic.
