Some Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S owners reported headsets becoming unresponsive during the v72 update period in December 2024. Early reports described some out-of-warranty owners being offered paid refurbished replacements; after public criticism, Meta was reported to provide replacement assistance in some out-of-warranty cases. That was not a promise of a free replacement for every affected headset. Owners should check their specific device through Meta’s current support flow.
What happened to some Quest headsets?
In late December 2024, owners reported that some Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S headsets became stuck during or after software updates and would not boot normally. The reports associated the problem with the v72 update period. They do not establish that every headset on those models was affected, or that inactivity was a universal cause, although some accounts involved devices that had not been used recently.
The issue is often described as a “bricked” headset, but the reports establish that some devices were unresponsive, not that every affected unit was permanently unusable. If your headset is stuck on the Meta logo or caught in a boot loop after an update, use the official support route rather than assuming your device has the same fault or remedy as another owner.
Why did Meta’s replacement response draw criticism?
Contemporary coverage said some owners whose headsets were out of warranty were initially told they would need to pay for a refurbished replacement. After criticism, reports described Meta offering replacement assistance that included some out-of-warranty cases. The reported shift explains the backlash and the later response, but it does not establish identical treatment for every owner.

Reports varied on the original replacement offers, and the available information does not support a single price or set of terms for all regions. Nor does it establish that every affected owner later received a free replacement. Warranty status, location, device serial number, and the individual case can matter.
What explanation did Meta give for the update problem?
In January 2025, UploadVR reported Meta vice president Mark Rabkin’s explanation that a four-year-old Android filesystem bug could cause corruption during simultaneous reads and writes, while a security patch prevented the faulty update from being rolled back. This is Meta’s reported technical explanation, not an independently confirmed diagnosis for every unresponsive headset.

How to check whether Meta will help with your headset
Meta’s issue-related support page, checked on October 8, 2026, lists Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S and says the company is working to resolve issues affecting those devices. The page is Spanish-language and geography-specific, so its wording and available terms should not be assumed to apply identically everywhere.
- Open Meta’s issue-related Quest support page and select the exact model you own.
- Follow the prompts for your device and provide its serial number when requested. Keep proof of purchase and any previous support correspondence available.
- Ask Meta to confirm whether your serial number qualifies, what remedy is available, and any shipping, return, or replacement terms for your region.
The current page establishes a route to support, not complete eligibility rules, a guaranteed turnaround, or a universal replacement policy. Confirm the offer directly with Meta before sending a device or paying for a replacement.

Should you buy another Quest?
A new headset is a separate purchase decision, not the first fix to try. Check support eligibility before spending money. If Meta offers a replacement, compare its cost and condition with the price and condition of any alternative, and confirm the regional shipping and return terms. The available reports do not establish uniform current prices or replacement terms.
Avoid treating unofficial firmware flashes, disassembly, battery disconnection, or generic repair kits as proven solutions to this update-related problem; the available evidence does not validate them as fixes.
