Quest 3 launched on October 10, 2023. Samsung’s former “Project Moohan” is now the Galaxy XR, a commercial Android XR headset that launched in the United States on October 21, 2025. The real choice is between an established, relatively affordable VR/MR gaming platform and a premium Android XR system costing several times as much.
Quest 3 is the value and gaming recommendation. Galaxy XR is the higher-end option for buyers who specifically want micro-OLED displays, eye tracking, Gemini, Google services, and Samsung-device integration.
Quest 3 and Galaxy XR are aimed at different buyers
Meta announced Quest 3 at $499.99 for 128GB and $649.99 for 512GB. Those are 2023 launch prices, not a guaranteed August 2026 checkout price; Meta’s current price, stock and bundles can change.
Samsung’s U.S. buying page lists the 256GB Galaxy XR at $1,799.99. That is roughly 3.6 times Quest 3’s 128GB launch price before adding Galaxy XR accessories.

What happened to Project Moohan?
Project Moohan was Samsung’s codename for its first Android XR headset. Samsung introduced the retail product as Galaxy XR, developed with Google and Qualcomm. Samsung’s launch announcement confirms U.S. availability from October 21, 2025, at $1,799.99: Samsung’s Galaxy XR announcement.
Calling Galaxy XR “upcoming” is therefore outdated for a current comparison. Availability, warranty, pricing and software support can still differ by country.
Display and optics: Galaxy XR has the premium specification
Quest 3
Quest 3 uses two 2064 × 2208-per-eye displays with Meta’s Infinite Display optical system and pancake lenses. Meta quotes 25 pixels per degree and 1,218 pixels per inch. Its thinner optical profile is a substantial improvement over Quest 2’s older design.
Galaxy XR
Samsung lists two 3552 × 3840 micro-OLED displays, up to 90Hz, 95% DCI-P3 coverage, a 109-degree horizontal field of view and a 100-degree vertical field of view. Details are in Samsung’s technical overview.

On paper, Galaxy XR should be the better choice for small text, virtual monitors and cinema-style viewing. Resolution alone does not prove superior comfort, glare control, passthrough, latency or image quality in every application; those require independent testing.
Processing and mixed reality
Meta says Quest 3 is the first Quest using Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and offers twice Quest 2’s graphics processing power. Samsung specifies Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage. Chip names do not establish a fixed performance multiplier: thermal limits, rendering resolution, refresh rate and software optimization matter.
Quest 3 helped bring full-color passthrough to a mass-market headset. Meta says its passthrough has more than ten times Quest 2’s pixel count and supports rapid switching between an immersive view and the physical room.
Galaxy XR includes two high-resolution passthrough cameras, six world-facing tracking cameras, four eye-tracking cameras and 3D photo and video capture. Samsung describes apps placed into the room, immersive environments and eye, hand and voice interaction. The available specifications confirm the hardware, not a universal comparative win in low light, fast motion, text readability or room mapping.

Input: included controllers versus eye-and-hand-first interaction
Quest 3 includes Touch Plus controllers at launch and also supports hand tracking. That makes it ready for conventional VR games without another major purchase.
Galaxy XR is designed around eye, hand and voice input. Samsung’s Galaxy XR Controllers add haptic feedback but are optional and sold separately; Samsung announced a $249.99 price for the controllers. Controller-free navigation is not the same as controller-free gaming, so traditional game players must include that cost.
Software, games and the Android XR ecosystem
Why Quest 3 remains the gaming choice
Quest 3 has the more mature standalone VR gaming platform, with an established Quest library, fitness software, social VR and PC VR streaming options. Check individual titles for native Quest 3 support, mixed-reality modes and PC requirements; a static app count does not show how many games are actively maintained or optimized.
What Galaxy XR adds
Galaxy XR is the first headset running Android XR. Samsung says most Android apps are supported and lists YouTube, Netflix, Peacock, Google Maps, Calm and NBA League Pass among its applications. It also advertises wireless PC casting, Steam-game streaming and connections to compatible Galaxy phones, PCs and other devices.

“Supports Android apps” does not mean every app has a spatial interface. An application may appear as a flat mobile window rather than a native XR experience. Likewise, streaming a Steam game does not automatically make Galaxy XR a replacement for a dedicated PC VR headset; compatible hardware, network capacity and setup still matter.
Gemini is Galaxy XR’s signature software feature
Samsung says Gemini can use conversational voice, visual context and the user’s surroundings to provide information and assistance across eye, hand and voice input. Google describes Android XR at Android.com/xr, while noting that some experiences remain in development and may change.
Useful examples could include asking about a visible object, translating text, finding information about a scene or arranging work windows. Whether those tasks are fast and reliable depends on the specific feature, account, language, country and application. AI responses can be wrong; Samsung advises checking results. Some functions require Google or Gemini accounts, and availability may vary.

Samsung rates Galaxy XR for up to two hours of enhanced or general use and up to 2.5 hours of content playback with its external battery pack. Those are “up to” manufacturer figures, not guaranteed mixed-use runtime, and the battery must remain connected.

Samsung lists approximately 1.2 pounds (about 545 grams) including the headset and forehead cushion. Meta describes Quest 3 as thinner and more balanced than Quest 2, but the cited official launch material does not provide a directly comparable standardized battery figure.
- Both products require planning for cable placement, charging and breaks.
- Video playback estimates do not predict demanding games or mixed-reality use.
- Face pressure, motion sickness, heat and eye strain can outweigh a specification advantage.
- Samsung recommends gradual use and warns that tracking may fail in moving vehicles.
Productivity and device integration
Galaxy XR is the stronger candidate for large virtual screens, Google Play applications, Google Maps, Gemini assistance and Samsung features such as PC Link, Call Continuity and Smart View on compatible devices. A Galaxy phone, Galaxy Book or Samsung TV can make that ecosystem more valuable.
Quest 3 is often the more sensible productivity purchase when the priority is inexpensive entertainment, fitness, social VR or PC VR streaming. Neither headset should be treated as an automatic laptop replacement: keyboard visibility, text entry, window management, app optimization, comfort and battery endurance decide whether a workflow is practical.

Which headset should you buy?
Choose Meta Quest 3 if you want:
- The lowest-cost route into standalone VR and mixed reality.
- A mature game catalog, fitness software and social VR.
- Included controllers for traditional VR games.
- Casual mixed reality or PC VR streaming without paying for premium Android XR hardware.
Choose Samsung Galaxy XR if you want:
- Micro-OLED resolution for virtual screens and premium media.
- Eye tracking plus hand and voice interaction.
- Gemini, Google services and Android app access.
- Integration with compatible Samsung phones, Galaxy Books and TVs.
- A premium productivity and media device and you accept the $1,799.99 starting price plus accessories.
Consider neither yet if you need:
- All-day battery life or lightweight AR glasses.
- A broad native gaming catalog at premium-headset prices.
- Confirmed enterprise management, regional support or language availability that has not been documented.
- A laptop replacement without testing your keyboard, apps and window workflow.
- A camera- and eye-tracking device in private spaces.
Verdict
Quest 3 is not obsolete, and Galaxy XR is not a simple “Quest killer.” Quest 3 remains the better-defined value for standalone VR gaming, fitness, social VR and affordable mixed reality. Galaxy XR is the more ambitious premium Android XR product, with dramatically higher display resolution, eye tracking, Gemini and deeper Samsung/Google integration. The right purchase depends less on which specification is largest than on whether those premium capabilities are worth more than three times Quest 3’s historical entry price.
