The “big things” reported for Meta Quest 3 in March 2025 were potential Horizon OS v76 software features—not a new headset announcement. Coverage described avatar-based calls in WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, plus expanded screen sharing in Horizon Home. Those features were reported as being tested; the report did not establish that they reached every Quest owner or remain available today.
What the Horizon OS v76 report actually described
The March 24, 2025 report concerned a software update for Quest headsets. Its two headline features came from beta-testing evidence and screenshots, rather than a detailed Meta announcement confirming a public release. The distinction matters: a feature spotted in a test build is not proof of a final feature, release date, or universal rollout. The original report also suggested that broader screen sharing could arrive in a later update, possibly v77.

How the reported avatar calls would differ from ordinary video
The feature was described as letting a caller appear as an avatar or virtual representation, with controls reportedly including field of view and a static background. That is not the same as showing an ordinary live camera image of the wearer. The report did not establish whether users could choose between an avatar and the headset’s camera, whether group calls were supported, or whether non-Quest participants could join.

An avatar presentation should not be treated as anonymous: it changes how the caller appears, not necessarily what the services process or what another participant can record. Check the relevant app’s current settings and terms rather than assuming the headset feature changes them.

What expanded Horizon Home sharing could mean
Horizon Home is the social environment where people can meet and spend time together. The reported change would extend an existing YouTube-sharing example to more two-dimensional apps, so people in the same Home session could potentially watch or view another user’s app window.
- Sharing an app window means showing a particular 2D app or its content, if the app and system permit it.
- Sharing the entire headset view would expose a broader view of what the wearer sees; the report did not establish that this was the feature.
- Sharing a VR game’s rendered experience is different again and was not confirmed by the report.
Do not assume every app will work. App permissions, privacy controls, or content-protection restrictions can affect what appears in a shared view. The report did not confirm support for every 2D app or for DRM-protected services, and it did not establish that v77 delivered the broader sharing feature.

How to check your Quest software and troubleshoot missing features
Menu labels can change between Horizon OS versions, so use the closest matching labels visible on your headset.
- Put on the headset and open Quick Settings.
- Open Settings, then look under System or Software Update for the installed version and any pending update.
- If an update is offered, connect the headset to Wi-Fi and power, then install it. Restart afterward if a feature still does not appear.
- Update WhatsApp, Messenger, and any relevant Meta companion app through their supported app stores.
A missing feature does not necessarily mean the headset is broken. Availability may depend on staged or account-based rollout, region, app support, privacy or age settings, and whether a feature is limited to Horizon Home. Beta features can change, move, or disappear. Do not sideload unofficial firmware or factory-reset a headset just to chase a feature that was only reported in testing.

Why this matters beyond one update
Meta’s stated direction is to make Horizon OS a platform beyond its own Quest hardware. In April 2024, Meta said it planned to open the operating system to third-party manufacturers, naming ASUS and Lenovo, and described shared identities, avatars, social connections, and a renamed Meta Horizon Store as parts of the ecosystem. Meta’s announcement establishes that platform ambition, not the availability of each later feature or the current status of partner hardware.
That context helps explain why calls and shared screens matter. If a headset can host ordinary communication and shared entertainment as well as games, it may feel less like an isolated device and more like a social living room. That is a potential platform benefit, not proof that these particular features improved retention or became widely used.

Quest 3 was introduced as a mixed-reality headset, and Meta’s broader strategy emphasizes passthrough, spatial computing, and social experiences. But the v76 report did not show that the reported call or sharing features depended on Quest 3’s color passthrough or were exclusive to Quest 3. Without model-specific confirmation, owners of Quest 2 or Quest 3S should not infer either compatibility or exclusion.

- Before sharing, close private messages, browser tabs, work documents, and payment or account screens.
- Confirm which app or view other people can see before beginning a session.
- Remember that a participant may record a call or shared content with another device.
- Review account privacy controls and parental or age restrictions where applicable. Meta’s Quest safety and privacy guide offers general guidance, but does not document the exact behavior of the reported v76 features.
Should these reported features influence a Quest purchase?
Not on their own. The report does not establish current availability, so treat the features as possible bonuses rather than guaranteed reasons to buy. Decide based on the headset’s broader experience, software library, comfort, mixed-reality needs, and the current price in your market. Meta’s Quest 3 and Quest 3S product pages are the appropriate places to check current product details; the accessories page covers official comfort and carrying options. Meta’s original Quest 3 launch announcement listed a starting price of $499.99 at launch, a historical figure rather than a current price: Meta’s 2023 announcement.
