The Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition is already a real product: Xbox announced the limited-edition bundle with Meta on June 24, 2025, and said it was available that day. It is a special-color Meta headset package for playing Xbox Cloud Gaming on a virtual screen—not a Microsoft-built VR headset or a new Xbox console. Whether it becomes a major strategic move is still unknown; the announcement provides no sales or adoption results.
What is the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition?
It is a limited-edition Meta Quest 3S bundle styled in Xbox Carbon Black and Velocity Green. Xbox’s June 24, 2025 announcement listed a custom 128GB headset, matching Touch Plus controllers, an Xbox Wireless Controller pre-paired with the headset, a Meta Quest Elite Strap, and three-month trials of Meta Horizon+ and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
Xbox announced a US launch price of $399.99. That is the price stated at launch, not confirmation of today’s price or availability. The announcement named Meta.com and Best Buy in the US, and Argos and EE in the UK; it described quantities as “extremely limited.” Current stock, resale listings, and Amazon availability are not established here.
How does Xbox gaming work on Quest?
Players use the Xbox app on a supported Meta Quest headset to stream cloud-playable games onto a large virtual display. The headset is acting as a screen for cloud gaming; the games are not running natively on Xbox console hardware inside a Microsoft VR device.

Xbox’s VR cloud gaming page lists Quest 3S, Quest 3, Quest Pro, and Quest 2 as supported headsets. It describes cloud saves for cross-device progression and lists Quest controllers, an Xbox Wireless Controller, and an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 as controller options.
What do you need to play?
- A supported Meta Quest headset and a compatible controller.
- The Xbox app installed on the headset.
- High-speed internet. Xbox recommends 5GHz Wi-Fi and a connection of at least 20 Mbps for best performance; this is Xbox’s guidance, not an independent performance test.
- An active Game Pass subscription for most cloud games, plus access to the relevant supported game. Xbox notes exceptions, and availability varies by time, region, plan, and platform.
Cloud-streamed games may have limitations involving resolution, audio, saves, purchases, companion-app support, and accessories. The available catalog and service terms can change, so check Xbox’s current page and game list for your region before subscribing or buying around a particular title.

Is the Xbox edition required to play Xbox games on Quest?
No. Xbox lists several Quest models—not just the Xbox Edition—as compatible with cloud gaming. The special bundle’s distinguishing value is its Xbox styling and included accessories and trial offers, rather than exclusive access to the Xbox app.
At launch, Xbox also said Game Pass Ultimate members could stream select cloud-playable games they owned, including some outside the Game Pass Ultimate catalog. Its announcement pointed to a “Stream Your Own Game” collection of over 100 supported titles at that time. That is a dated catalog statement, not a guarantee about the current list or subscription terms.

Does this mean Microsoft is building its own VR platform?
No such platform was announced in the sources describing this product. The hardware is Meta’s Quest 3S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming is delivered through Meta Quest. The Xbox Edition makes the partnership more visible as a physical bundle, but it does not establish that Microsoft is developing an Xbox-branded VR headset or that Xbox games run natively on one.
The collaboration also fits a broader relationship. In an October 11, 2022 partnership announcement, Microsoft described work involving Teams, Microsoft 365 apps, Windows 365 plans, and enterprise device management, alongside exploration of Xbox Cloud Gaming on Quest. Xbox characterized the 2025 edition as an expansion of that gaming collaboration.

Is it Microsoft’s next big play?
That remains a judgment, not an established result. The product is a concrete way to put Xbox cloud gaming on a Quest virtual display and extend a Microsoft–Meta partnership. But the available official announcements do not report sales, player adoption, or evidence that this limited edition has become a major gaming strategy. It is most accurate to call it a partnership milestone, not proof of a new Microsoft VR platform or a commercial breakthrough.
