Meta Quest v71.0 was a November 2024 Horizon OS update that refreshed the headset interface and added practical features including Calendar integration, train support for Travel Mode, easier Remote Desktop access, smoother passthrough motion, Dolby audio support and improved room setup. It rolled out to Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S and Quest Pro.
This is a historical explainer, not a report on the current Quest software release in 2026. The rollout began during the week of November 4, 2024, and Meta delivered features gradually, so a headset running v71 did not necessarily show every feature immediately.
What was Meta Quest v71.0?
Meta Quest v71.0 was an operating-system update, not a new headset or hardware revision. Contemporary rollout coverage placed its release in the week beginning November 4, 2024, with a build-history date of September 30, 2024. It was the first major Quest software update following the launch of the Quest 3S, making it especially relevant to new owners.

The update covered the Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S and Quest Pro. However, coverage of a model receiving the firmware should not be confused with every model supporting every feature identically. Passthrough, scene understanding, camera-related functions and other mixed-reality capabilities remain dependent on headset hardware and software support.

The new Horizon OS interface was a refresh, not a complete redesign
v71’s most visible change was a visual and navigational refresh to Horizon OS. Meta changed the appearance and behavior of system panels, updated colors and contrast, adjusted the control-bar presentation and reorganized parts of Settings. Light and Dark themes also received revised styling, while Search and various system dialogs were polished.
That made the interface feel different, but “total redesign” overstates what the evidence supports. The underlying Horizon OS experience remained recognizable. For some users, the changes were subtle, and a v71 installation did not always make every advertised visual change appear at once. UploadVR described the update as a refresh affecting panels, the control bar and colors.
Meta’s Quest updates use staged rollouts. A version number can therefore confirm that the base firmware is installed without guaranteeing that every account, region or headset model has received each server-controlled or separately staged feature.
Calendar brought Google and Outlook events into Quest
v71 introduced a first-party Calendar app with integration for Google Calendar and Outlook. Users could view existing appointments inside the headset instead of removing it to check a phone or desktop.
This was one of the clearest productivity improvements in the update. It is useful for checking work schedules, classes and meeting times while using a Quest headset, but it does not turn Quest into a complete replacement for a phone or desktop calendar. Sign-in, account permissions and feature availability can affect the setup.

Travel Mode expanded from airplanes to trains
Quest’s Travel Mode, originally associated mainly with airplane use, was expanded to support train travel. The feature is designed to keep virtual interfaces usable when the headset is moving through an environment where normal stationary tracking assumptions may fail.
Train support is best understood as a seated-travel aid, not a cure for motion sickness or a license to use room-scale experiences in a moving carriage. Tunnels, dim lighting, visually repetitive scenery and carriage movement can still reduce tracking reliability or cause discomfort. Users should obey transportation rules, stay seated, remain aware of their surroundings and avoid standing or walking while immersed.
A train also cannot guarantee a stable tracking environment. Travel Mode is software support for a difficult tracking scenario, not a promise of perfect performance on every route.
Remote Desktop, Quest Link, Air Link and casting are different
v71 made Remote Desktop easier to reach through Quick Settings and improved access to PC-connected workflows. It also brought changes associated with Quest Link, including PC casting and easier access to computer-related features.
- Quest Link: a wired connection between the headset and a PC for PCVR.
- Air Link: a wireless PCVR connection that depends heavily on the local network.
- Remote Desktop: access to a computer desktop from within Quest.
- Casting: showing the headset’s view to a PC or another audience.
These are separate workflows. v71 did not turn every computer into a fully supported wireless workstation. Remote Desktop and PCVR still depend on the computer, Meta Quest Link software, account setup, cable or network quality and the chosen connection method. A headset update also does not automatically update the host PC, graphics drivers or Link application.
Passthrough became smoother, not necessarily sharper
The reported passthrough improvement in v71 concerned frame-rate alignment between the passthrough camera feed and the headset display. The expected result was smoother motion with less visible tearing or judder.

That is different from a resolution or clarity upgrade. Smoothness describes motion consistency and reduced timing mismatch; clarity describes sharpness, exposure, resolution and image detail. v71 primarily addressed the former. It should not be treated as a major camera-quality transformation, and mixed-reality results still vary by headset hardware, lighting and room conditions. Dolby audio support and a more useful volume mixer
v71 added Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital Surround support for compatible content and applications. Supported playback could use head tracking to make spatial audio feel more anchored around the listener.
Compatibility is the important qualifier. Dolby support does not convert all Quest games and videos into Atmos content. The source media, application, licensing and audio path must support the relevant format, and results can differ between the headset’s speakers and external headphones. It is an audio-processing and compatibility feature, not a replacement for better physical speakers.

The update also added a volume mixer that could separate call audio from app or media audio. That made it easier to balance a multiplayer conversation, social session or work call against whatever was playing in the headset. Menu labels and locations may have changed in later Horizon OS versions, so v71-era paths should not be treated as guaranteed 2026 instructions.
Pair controllers and compatible styluses inside the headset
v71 added an in-headset pairing flow for tracked controllers, reducing the need to rely on the Meta Quest mobile app for routine pairing. It also supported pairing compatible third-party styluses directly from the headset, reportedly through Settings > Devices.
“Third-party stylus” does not mean every stylus will work. Compatibility depends on the device’s tracking method and software support. The mobile app may still be relevant for initial setup, account recovery or unsupported pairing situations.

Space Setup made room scanning easier to resume
Space Setup received workflow improvements for mixed reality. Users could resume scanning an existing room and update its layout or furniture instead of always starting from scratch. The setup experience also added a miniature representation of the scanned environment.

Scanning quality still depends on lighting, occlusion, visible surfaces and the capabilities of the particular headset. Quest 2 owners should not assume the same scene-understanding behavior as Quest 3 or Quest 3S owners, and Quest Pro should not automatically be treated as equivalent to either newer model.
Privacy indicators showed when permissions were being used
v71 added real-time indicators in the universal menu to show when applications were accessing device permissions. In a mixed-reality headset, visibility into camera and microphone activity is particularly important.
An indicator that a sensor is active is different from an app merely having permission to use it. Users should still review application permissions in Settings. The indicator also is not a complete audit of every form of data collection or developer behavior.

Video quality and playback behavior could therefore differ from the original file.
Audio to Expression was mainly for developers
For developers, v71 introduced Audio to Expression, a machine-perception capability that derives facial-motion and lip-sync signals from microphone input. Compared with earlier lip-sync approaches, it expanded expression signals beyond mouth movement to areas such as cheeks, eyelids and eyebrows, while aiming to use less CPU.
This should not be presented as a consumer setting that automatically gives every avatar new facial expressions. It is a developer-facing capability whose results depend on how an application implements the Movement SDK. Because microphone input is involved, developers should also consider consent, disclosure and privacy controls. The available reporting does not establish that Audio to Expression automatically records or uploads microphone audio.
Which Quest headsets received v71?

Developers may have cared more about Audio to Expression and scene-related changes than the cosmetic interface. Prospective buyers should also avoid buying a headset solely for v71: the update was distributed to older compatible models, and v71 is not the current Quest software version in 2026.
How to check for the update
For the v71-era process, the general route was:
- Put on the headset and open Quick Settings.
- Open Settings.
- Go to the system or software-update area.
- Check the installed version and look for an available update.
- Keep the headset on Wi-Fi with sufficient charge while updating.
- Restart if the interface or a feature does not appear immediately.
Meta has changed Horizon OS labels and menu organization since 2024, so exact wording can differ on a 2026 headset.
If a v71 feature is missing
- Confirm that the headset reports v71.0 or later.
- Restart the headset and check again.
- Update the Meta Quest mobile app and PC Link software when the feature involves pairing or PC connectivity.
- Check whether the feature depends on the headset model, region, account or compatible content.
- For account-linked features, sign out and back in only after simpler checks fail.
- Do not factory-reset the headset as a first response.
- Allow time for a staged rollout and consult Meta’s current support documentation for later-version menu paths.
Some community users reported tracking, passthrough, graphical or audio problems around v71, while other reports described later-build fixes. These are anecdotal reports, not evidence of how widespread any issue was: see examples from Quest Pro users and later-build troubleshooting reports.
Should you update or buy a Quest headset for v71?
For an existing compatible owner, the update’s strongest case was practical: better navigation, Calendar, easier computer access, train Travel Mode, controller pairing, audio controls and room-setup improvements. The main reasons for caution were staged availability, changed menu locations and the possibility of early firmware bugs—especially for users who depend on a stable PCVR setup.
For a buyer in 2026, v71 alone is not a reason to purchase a new headset. Update an existing compatible device first. If buying into the ecosystem, the Quest 3S is the lower-cost entry point, while the Quest 3 is the better fit for readers prioritizing optical clarity, mixed reality, passthrough and productivity. Current prices, storage options and bundles should be checked directly because the v71-era evidence does not establish August 2026 pricing.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Meta Quest v71.0 was a substantial November 2024 feature update, but its “new look” was a broad Horizon OS refresh rather than a ground-up redesign. Calendar, train Travel Mode, Remote Desktop access, smoother passthrough motion, Dolby support, volume mixing, pairing and room-scanning improvements made it useful; staged availability and hardware differences meant the experience was not identical for every Quest owner.
