Meta’s September 25, 2024, announcements covered two very different devices: Quest 3S, a consumer mixed-reality headset that went on sale October 15, and Orion, a transparent AR-glasses prototype that Meta said it would not sell to consumers. If you want a Meta headset for games now, compare Quest 3S with Quest 3; Orion is a preview of the company’s ambitions, not a product to buy.
What Meta announced at Connect 2024
At Meta Connect 2024, the company presented Quest 3S as a lower-cost route into its current mixed-reality headset platform and Orion as a prototype for future see-through AR glasses. They are not two versions of the same product: Quest 3S is a visor-style headset for consumers, while Orion is a development device intended to help Meta work toward a future glasses product line.
What Quest 3S is—and what mixed reality means
Quest 3S is a standalone headset: ordinary use does not require a gaming PC or console. It runs Quest software and games, including titles that receive Quest 3 performance updates, and supports Meta’s library of thousands of apps and games, according to Meta’s announcement.
Its mixed-reality mode uses cameras to show a color view of the room on screens inside the headset, with digital objects and experiences layered over that camera feed. That is different from transparent AR glasses: Quest 3S does not let you look through clear lenses at the room. In VR, the headset instead presents a virtual environment in place of the room view.

Launch price and availability
Meta announced a U.S. starting price of $299.99 on September 25, 2024; general availability began October 15, 2024. At the same event, Meta reduced the launch-era U.S. price of the 512GB Quest 3 to $499.99. These are historical launch prices, not a statement of current pricing or availability. Check Meta’s Quest 3S store page and Quest 3 store page for current listings.
Quest 3S versus Quest 3
Both belong to Meta’s current standalone Quest platform, but Quest 3S saves money by making compromises in optics and display rather than offering a more advanced version of Quest 3. Meta describes Quest 3 as having four times the storage of baseline Quest 3S, pancake lenses, a wider field of view, and two displays at 2064 × 2208 pixels per eye. Those are Meta’s product specifications and positioning, not an independent comparison test.

| Consideration | Quest 3S | Quest 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Lower-cost current-generation mixed-reality headset | Higher-end consumer Quest |
| Mixed reality | Full-color camera passthrough | Full-color camera passthrough |
| Storage | Baseline capacity; Meta says Quest 3 has four times as much | Four times baseline Quest 3S storage, per Meta |
| Optics and view | Less advanced lens system | Pancake lenses and wider field of view, per Meta |
| Display detail | Lower-resolution display system than Quest 3 | Two displays, 2064 × 2208 pixels per eye, per Meta |
| Launch-era U.S. price | $299.99 starting price, announced September 25, 2024 | 512GB model reduced to $499.99 at the September 25, 2024 announcement |
| Likely fit | First headset, casual gaming, fitness, or a tighter budget | Frequent use, clearer virtual screens, or more storage |
Quest 3S’s lower price can make sense if the main goal is access to Quest games and color-passthrough mixed reality. Quest 3 is the stronger fit if you expect to use the headset often, care about lens clarity and field of view, or want room for a larger installed game library. Shared platform does not mean identical visual quality or an identical experience.
What Orion is
Orion, previously codenamed Project Nazare, is Meta’s prototype for lightweight glasses with transparent lenses. Rather than replacing the wearer’s view with camera passthrough, it is designed to place 2D and 3D digital content over a direct view of the physical world. Meta described uses including multitasking windows, entertainment, and life-size holograms, alongside video calls and WhatsApp and Messenger messaging. These are prototype demonstrations and stated capabilities, not a guarantee of features in a future retail device.

AI and input
Meta says Orion integrates Meta AI to respond to and interpret aspects of a wearer’s surroundings. Demonstrations included asking about objects or a scene, and generating a recipe based on food in a refrigerator. The prototype also uses hand gestures and a wrist-worn neural interface for input. “Neural” here does not mean mind reading or an implanted brain interface: Meta describes a wristband that detects signals associated with hand and finger movements.
Why the glasses form matters
Transparent lenses can preserve direct eye contact and awareness of other people in a way an opaque headset cannot. The challenge is fitting displays, sensors, computing, and power into an eyewear-like form. Brightness, field of view, battery life, heat, cost, prescription compatibility, and durability are important constraints for compact AR glasses; Meta’s announcement does not establish final consumer specifications for those areas. Meta called Orion its most advanced AR glasses prototype and claimed it had the largest field of view in the smallest AR-glasses form it had produced. Those are Meta’s characterizations, not independently established measurements.

Orion is not for sale
Meta explicitly said this Orion prototype would not be released directly to consumers. The company said employees and selected external audiences would use it as Meta iterates toward a future consumer AR-glasses product line. Its September 2024 announcement gave no consumer price, preorder program, general availability date, or confirmed retail launch date for Orion. Meta’s plans for future AR glasses do not establish that an Orion-branded product is coming on a particular schedule.

The contrast points to two stages of Meta’s spatial-computing strategy. Quest headsets provide immersive VR and camera-based mixed reality in a visor form; Ray-Ban Meta glasses offer consumer wearables with cameras, audio, and AI but no display; Orion demonstrates Meta’s aim to add transparent visual overlays in an everyday-glasses form. Orion illustrates that long-term ambition, while Quest 3S is the consumer gaming and mixed-reality device Meta actually put on sale.

Which one should you consider?
- Choose Quest 3S if you want a standalone Quest for games, fitness, media, or entry-level mixed reality and prioritize the lower launch-era price point. Confirm current price and stock on Meta’s store before buying.
- Choose Quest 3 if better optics, wider field of view, and greater storage matter enough to justify paying more than the 3S price.
- Treat Orion as a technology preview if you are following AR development. It is not a purchase option, and Meta has not announced a consumer release date for this prototype.
