Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the strongest all-round choice if story and gameplay carry equal weight: its relatively self-contained story pairs well with the series’ stealth-action design. For sheer freedom in how you tackle missions, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the better pick. This ranking covers the branded mainline entries, weighs narrative and play together, and accounts for the era each game was made in.
How this ranking weighs story and gameplay
“Story” here means character development, thematic ambition, coherence, emotional impact, and closure. “Gameplay” means stealth-system depth, player freedom, mission and level design, pacing, and how much of the game is interactive. The placements are editorial judgments, not an objective consensus or a numerical score.
These measures do not always point to the same winner. The Phantom Pain is a standout for flexible mission play; Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots offers a saga-wide narrative culmination but leans heavily on cinematic passages; Snake Eater tells a comparatively self-contained story. Release-era context matters too: control feel and design conventions changed across decades, and there is no objective formula for adjusting one game’s age against another’s.
Metal Gear Solid games ranked
1. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Why it ranks first: Snake Eater is the strongest balance of narrative and play. Its story can stand largely on its own, while its jungle setting and survival-focused stealth give the player a distinct set of problems to solve. Its focused narrative also makes it a useful starting point for someone who wants a complete-feeling story rather than the full saga’s accumulated context.
#1 Best Overall
- GAME LIST: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (HD Collection version), Metal Gear: Ghost Babel. Versions for other regions of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (HD Collection version) can be downloaded separately from the store. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker supports online play for up to 6 players.
- DIGITAL BOOKS: Metal Gear Solid 4: Screenplay Book, Metal Gear Solid 4: Master Book, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Screenplay Book, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Master Book. All are accessible via the in-game Start Menu.
- METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol.1 SAVE-DATA BONUS*: If a user has saved data for any title included in METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol.1, you can receive in-game items usable in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (HD Collection version) respectively. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Bonus: Gold Camouflage. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (HD Collection version) Bonus: GOLD Uniform.
The tradeoff: It is still a game of its era. Players accustomed to newer controls and more open mission structures may find its movement and pacing less fluid than later entries. That is part of the comparison, not a reason to ignore the design achievements of its release period.
2. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Why it ranks here: The Phantom Pain is the strongest gameplay-first choice. Its stealth missions support a broad range of approaches, making experimentation and player choice central to the experience. For readers who care most about how much freedom a game gives them moment to moment, it can reasonably take the top spot.
The tradeoff: Its story is less satisfying as a complete dramatic arc than the best narrative-led entries in the series. A ranking that gave gameplay more weight would place it first; this combined list keeps it just behind Snake Eater because both axes matter.

3. Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty
Why it ranks here: Sons of Liberty builds on the original Metal Gear Solid’s stealth-action foundation and is ambitious in its themes and storytelling. It is a key choice for players interested in the series’ more challenging narrative turns and in how its central ideas develop across entries.
The tradeoff: Its story is closely tied to the broader saga and can be divisive in execution. The original game’s release-era design also means its controls and level structure may feel less accommodating than later entries.
4. Metal Gear Solid
Why it ranks here: The first Metal Gear Solid is a foundational stealth-action adventure, with a focused story and memorable character work. It remains a natural place to begin if you want to follow the series from its early 3D chapter and see the groundwork later games build on.

- Experience the intense thrill of infiltrating undetected. Immerse yourself in the Metal Gear series—the pinnacle of the stealth-action genre—as you infiltrate strongholds and outsmart enemies to complete your missions. This collection is the second installment in the definitive Metal Gear Master Collection.
The tradeoff: Its age is more apparent in controls and presentation than in its core premise. Comparing it directly with later games without accounting for its original hardware and design context would be unfair.
5. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Why it ranks here: MGS4 is the choice for players who value a saga-wide narrative culmination. It draws together story threads and characters from earlier entries in a way that gives the series’ long arc a sense of closure.

The story payoff also depends more than Snake Eater’s on familiarity with what came before, so it is not the best first game for a newcomer.

6. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
Why it ranks here: Peace Walker extends the series’ stealth-action approach in a portable-era entry and is an important part of the mainline story for players following the broader saga. It is worth considering if you want to understand the links between the earlier and later chapters.
The tradeoff: Its original portable design context shapes its structure and feel. It is less immediately suited to a newcomer seeking one self-contained story than Snake Eater, and its place in the list reflects the balance of story and gameplay rather than its importance to series continuity.
Which Metal Gear Solid game should you play first?
- For the best story-and-gameplay balance: Start with Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
- For the most flexible stealth missions: Choose Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
- For a saga-spanning payoff: Play Metal Gear Solid 4 after the earlier entries, rather than treating it as a standalone introduction.
- To follow the series from its early 3D chapter: Begin with Metal Gear Solid, then continue in release order.
What this ranking includes—and where to find the games
This list ranks the branded mainline Metal Gear Solid entries: Metal Gear Solid, Sons of Liberty, Snake Eater, Guns of the Patriots, Peace Walker, and The Phantom Pain. It does not rank the original MSX Metal Gear games, spin-offs such as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance or Ghost Babel, or remakes as separate entries. The Phantom Pain is included as the fifth numbered-era mainline game despite not having a number in its title.
