Meta has paused the third-party hardware program that was supposed to turn Meta Horizon OS into a multi-manufacturer VR platform. ASUS ROG and Lenovo were named as partners in April 2024, but neither announced headset reached stores before Meta said in December 2025 that it would refocus on first-party hardware and software. Specialist reporting describes the announced devices as effectively shelved, although neither company has publicly confirmed a permanent cancellation.
This is a retreat from licensing Meta’s VR platform—not an announced exit from VR. Meta continues to develop its own future headsets, leaving consumers with fewer near-term hardware choices and manufacturers with a less certain alternative to Google’s Android XR.
What Meta promised in April 2024
Meta announced that the software powering Quest would be opened to other manufacturers and renamed Meta Horizon OS. The plan was to make Meta the operating-system and services provider for a broader XR hardware market, rather than limiting its influence to Quest-branded devices.
Horizon OS was presented as an Android Open Source Project-based system with inside-out tracking, hand and eye tracking, passthrough, scene understanding, spatial anchors, social identity, companion-device integration and access to the Meta Quest Store, later renamed the Meta Horizon Store. Meta’s announcement is available at about.fb.com.

In practical terms, manufacturers would have supplied different designs while Meta supplied much of the common software, account, social and store infrastructure. Developers could theoretically reach more devices without rebuilding their applications for an unrelated operating system.
The two headline partners
| Partner | Announced direction | What was publicly established |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS Republic of Gamers | Performance-oriented gaming headset | No final name, specifications, price or launch date was announced in the cited material. |
| Lenovo | Mixed-reality hardware for productivity, learning and entertainment | No final specifications, price or release schedule was announced in the cited material. |
Meta also worked with Xbox on a limited-edition Quest product. Reporting identified it as a Quest 3S-based Xbox edition, not proof that an independent Xbox-designed Horizon OS hardware market had launched. See Road to VR’s account.
What actually happened after the announcement
- April 2024: Meta announced Horizon OS and named ASUS and Lenovo as hardware partners.
- September 2024: Meta strengthened its own price ladder, announcing Quest 3S from $299.99 in the United States and a 512GB Quest 3 price of $499.99. Those were announcement-time prices, not guaranteed current prices. Details are in Meta’s Quest 3S announcement.
- 2025: The ASUS and Lenovo devices failed to appear in major public hardware announcements. Their absence did not prove cancellation, but it made the promised ecosystem increasingly theoretical. Road to VR documented the missing partner hardware at Meta Connect.
- December 17, 2025: Meta told TechCrunch that it had paused the third-party hardware initiative to concentrate on first-party hardware and software. TechCrunch reported the statement at techcrunch.com.
Road to VR characterized the consequence as an effective cancellation or indefinite hold for the ASUS and Lenovo headsets: roadtovr.com. “Paused” is the safer official description. Neither ASUS nor Lenovo has publicly disclosed final contractual status, investment, prototype progress or a permanent cancellation in the cited coverage.

The confirmed reason: first-party focus
Meta’s stated explanation is that it wants to focus on building its own hardware and software. That points to a narrower strategy in which Meta controls the product, operating-system integration, support experience and release schedule.

The likely strategic tensions
Several additional explanations are plausible, but they are analysis rather than confirmed Meta motives. A licensed headset maker would have needed to offer a compelling advantage over Quest while relying on a platform owner that also sells competing hardware. It would have faced the cost of adapting Horizon OS to different displays, sensors, thermals, controllers and support requirements. Meta might also have wanted to avoid fragmenting quality or diverting Reality Labs resources.
Meta’s own pricing made the challenge sharper. A third-party product had to undercut Quest, deliver substantially better hardware, provide a specialist feature set, or target a higher-margin business market. A modestly improved headset could struggle against Meta’s established store and aggressive pricing. That is an economic inference from the published products and the pause, not a statement that Meta cancelled the program because of weak Quest sales.
The reversal also arrives as Google promotes Android XR, giving manufacturers another route to a shared operating system. Competition between platform strategies may have influenced the context, but Meta has not publicly attributed the pause to Google.

Why ASUS is especially exposed
ASUS ROG’s proposed device was meant to be a performance gaming headset. That positioning would have required a clear answer to several buyer questions:

- Would it run the same Quest games and applications?
- Could better displays, comfort, audio, cooling or controllers justify a higher price?
- How strong would standalone and PCVR support be?
- Would Meta provide timely access to new platform features?
- Could ASUS differentiate without fragmenting accessories and developer support?
Without Horizon OS, ASUS could wait for a restart, abandon the concept or evaluate another platform. Android XR is the most obvious reported alternative, but a switch would not be a software-only exercise. Input systems, tracking, storefronts, APIs, certification, industrial design and existing engineering work would all need review. 9to5Google reported on Android XR as a possible route, not as a confirmed ASUS product.
Why Lenovo is especially exposed
Lenovo’s announced focus—productivity, learning and entertainment—implies requirements different from a gaming-first headset. Businesses and schools typically need predictable support, device administration, account management, security terms, replacement programs and long operating lifecycles. Users may prioritize weight, comfort, readable virtual monitors and battery life over peak game performance.
A Lenovo product could theoretically move to Android XR, a Windows-linked workflow or a proprietary enterprise solution. None would be a simple continuation of the Horizon OS project. Changing platforms could affect management tools, content deployment, application compatibility and the commercial support model. Meta’s managed education offering combines Quest hardware with Meta Horizon solutions; institutions should check current terms directly at Meta’s education announcement.
Does “paused” mean the headsets are cancelled?
Not definitively. The projects were publicly announced, did not launch, and are now in doubt because Meta paused the platform program. “Indefinitely delayed,” “effectively shelved” or “effectively cancelled according to specialist reporting” accurately describes their present status. “Permanently cancelled” would go beyond the evidence unless ASUS, Lenovo or Meta makes a final statement.

Fewer Horizon OS hardware choices
Consumers lose the prospect of choosing a headset optimized for gaming, comfort, displays, enterprise management or another design priority while retaining the Quest software environment. Meta can optimize more easily for a narrower range of first-party devices, but ASUS and Lenovo would have added competitive pressure on ergonomics, accessories, support and pricing.
Existing Quest owners are not automatically affected
The pause concerns future third-party hardware. It does not, by itself, stop existing Quest headsets from working or remove access to the current store. Buyers should not interpret the announcement as invalidating a current Quest purchase.

What can be bought now
- Quest 3S: Meta’s entry standalone mixed-reality option. The last cited U.S. starting price was $299.99, announced in September 2024; verify live price, storage, promotions and regional availability at meta.com/quest/quest-3s/. Fresnel lenses and an entry-level design may not suit buyers seeking maximum visual clarity or premium comfort.
- Quest 3: The higher-performance mainstream Quest model. Meta announced a 512GB price of $499.99 in September 2024; check the current vendor listing at meta.com/quest/quest-3/. It remains a Meta ecosystem product, not a substitute for every high-end PCVR or enterprise requirement.
- PCVR: A separate path for buyers prioritizing graphics, enthusiast features or SteamVR. It generally requires a capable gaming PC and adds setup complexity.
Do not wait specifically for ASUS or Lenovo unless either company publishes a new launch plan.

What this means for developers
The original promise was a larger installed base and more hardware variety using common identity, store and platform services. The pause weakens confidence that Horizon OS will become a stable multi-vendor target. Developers may now question whether partner headsets will ship, how much hardware-specific API support Meta will provide and whether they should prepare for Android XR as well.
That is uncertainty, not proof of a quantified developer exodus. Quest users and the existing Meta store remain relevant; the change is that the expected expansion beyond Meta hardware is no longer dependable.
Android XR gains an opening—but not an automatic victory
For manufacturers seeking a platform without building a complete XR operating system, Android XR now looks more attractive. Its potential advantages include Google’s broader Android ecosystem, multi-manufacturer ambitions and a possible path across headsets and glasses.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

However, Android XR still has to answer practical questions about native VR application availability, developer incentives, certification, licensing, manufacturer control, input and performance requirements. A large Android mobile app base does not automatically equal a larger native VR game library than Horizon OS. An unreleased or developing Android XR device is not current inventory for a buyer who needs a headset today.
Is Meta abandoning VR?
The evidence does not support that broad conclusion. Later reporting said Meta was still building multiple next-generation headsets, although timing remained uncertain; see UploadVR. The clearer interpretation is that Meta remains committed to XR while narrowing its platform strategy and emphasizing first-party execution.
Meta has also described smart glasses and mixed-reality headsets as complementary parts of a wider computing platform, rather than announcing that glasses immediately replace Quest. Its broader Reality Labs framing appears in Meta’s 10-year Reality Labs article.
