Choose Casual if you are new to Metroid Prime or want less combat pressure; choose Normal for the standard experience. Hard is a later challenge: you must clear the game on Normal to unlock it. Nintendo says Casual lowers enemy health and the damage Samus takes, but does not publish numerical multipliers.
What changes between Casual, Normal, and Hard?
| Mode | Availability | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Casual | Available from the start | Nintendo says enemy HP and the damage Samus takes are reduced. Nintendo recommends it for newcomers and players who want a more relaxed experience. |
| Normal | Available from the start | The standard Metroid Prime experience, according to Nintendo Life’s summary of Nintendo’s announcement. |
| Hard | Unlocks after clearing the game on Normal | A harder challenge. Nintendo’s version 1.1.0 update history says the difficulty of some Hard-mode enemies was adjusted; it does not give numerical HP or damage multipliers. |
Nintendo’s descriptions are qualitative: they do not specify how much enemy health or incoming damage changes. Hard-mode guidance should also account for the adjustment made in version 1.1.0, released December 3, 2025. See Nintendo’s difficulty and settings overview and Nintendo Support’s update history.
Which mode fits your play style?
Choose Casual for a lower-pressure first run
Casual is a sensible starting point if this is your first Metroid Prime, if combat in earlier Metroid games has frustrated you, or if you would rather focus on exploration and story than on tougher fights. It reduces both enemy health and the damage Samus takes, so it is an actual combat adjustment—not simply a suggested beginner label. It does not invalidate the exploration or story.
Choose Normal for the standard challenge
Pick Normal if you are comfortable with action-adventure combat and want the standard experience. It is available immediately, and completing the game on this setting unlocks Hard.

- Explore a mysterious planet to find your way home
- Deadly sharpshooter Sylux has finally caught up with renowned bounty hunter Samus Aran! Now she must explore this planet, all while battling the strange creatures that inhabit it, to find her way home.
- Scan your surroundings for clues, make the most of your equipment and weapons, and use Samus’s newfound psychic abilities—and her technologically advanced bike, the Vi-O-La—to traverse and explore the environment. Operate mechanisms, control your charge beam, and more—you’ll need every tool at your disposal to survive and escape Viewros!
Save Hard for after a Normal clear
Hard is for players who want a more demanding run and are willing to finish Normal first. The game’s version 1.1.0 update adjusted the difficulty of some enemies on Hard, so launch-era assumptions may not describe the current balance. Nintendo has not published exact multipliers for the mode.
Adjust comfort without changing combat difficulty
If your main concern is aiming or control comfort rather than how much damage enemies deal, Nintendo says stick or mouse sensitivity can be finely adjusted in Options. Display and sound volume can also be customized. These settings are separate from the Casual, Normal, and Hard choice.

In an English translation reported by Nintendo Everything, designer-director Kensuke Tanabe said the team wanted the game to welcome both people playing their first Metroid Prime and returning fans. He also described early paths in most zones as linear, with later visits using new abilities to reveal further discoveries. That context may help explain the game’s intended audience, but it does not establish one difficulty as best for everyone.

“This game could be someone’s first Metroid Prime, but we thought there would also be people making their long-awaited return to the world of Metroid Prime. We wanted to construct something that all people could enjoy, so while we pushed the Metroid Prime adventure forward, we included mechanics from previous Prime games in ways that would draw in new players. Also, we had goals for the game’s story and characters, and that became the motivation for some decisions.”
