Choose a Metroidvania if you want to learn a persistent, interconnected world that gradually opens as you gain abilities. Choose a roguelite if you want to repeat runs, adapt to changing encounters, and learn through failure—often while keeping some rewards between attempts. The labels can overlap, so the game’s actual map, reset rules, and progression matter more than its store tag.
What is the core difference?
A Metroidvania makes exploration of a connected world the central loop: you find routes you cannot yet access, gain an ability, then return to open those routes and discover what lies beyond them. A roguelite organizes play around repeated runs. A run may use variable layouts, encounters, or choices; when it ends, you start again, sometimes carrying forward selected currency, upgrades, or unlocks.
These are tendencies, not strict, mutually exclusive definitions. Steam’s 28 April 2022 explainer describes “roguelite” as a looser borrowing of roguelike elements, while noting that “roguelike” is also used as an umbrella term and that strict definitions remain debated. Steam’s overview of roguelike and roguelite terminology also identifies “Roguevania” as a related term.
How does exploration feel different?
Metroidvania: learn one world, then revisit it
In a Metroidvania, the map is typically persistent and interconnected. Access is restricted by abilities or skills: a passage may require a new movement technique or another form of interaction. Gaining that ability changes how you read familiar places, making backtracking a purposeful search for passages, secrets, upgrades, or challenges—not simply retracing steps.

A 2020 academic framework describes this pattern as access to areas being limited by inventory or skills, with abilities such as high jumps or gliding prompting players to revisit earlier areas. Its analysis identifies recurring exploration of scenarios, or backtracking, as a pillar of the genre. The framework for studying exploration in Metroidvania games helps explain why a persistent map and ability gates work together.
Roguelite: explore within a run
In a roguelite, exploration usually takes place inside a run that can end and reset. The route, encounters, or available choices may vary between attempts, depending on the game. Rather than returning to an old room because a newly acquired ability opens its door, you may be deciding how to handle the current run’s risks and opportunities.
Procedural generation is one possible roguelike element, not a requirement that can be assumed of every roguelite. Academic analysis describes elements such as procedural generation and permadeath as mechanics that can be combined with other genres, rather than a single checklist every game must satisfy. A 2018 study of roguelike elements in indie games offers this broader framing.

What happens to progress after death?
Metroidvania: the adventure usually continues
Progress in a Metroidvania commonly means retaining acquired abilities and the access they provide as you continue the same adventure. Death does not generally send you back to the beginning of the entire game, though the precise checkpoint and loss rules depend on the title.
Roguelite: the run resets, but some progress may survive
In a roguelite, the end of a run typically returns you to an earlier state for another attempt. What carries over is game-specific: some titles preserve currency, permanent upgrades, unlocks, or objects, while others may preserve less. “Roguelite” does not by itself tell you exactly what death costs. Check the game’s description or rules for whether upgrades persist, what is lost, and what a new run retains.
The contrast is not simply “progress” versus “no progress.” Metroidvanias often advance one continuing journey by expanding the character’s abilities and access to the world. Roguelites can reset a run while still building longer-term progression across attempts.

Why play again?
Metroidvania replayability: find what you missed
A Metroidvania can reward further exploration of its existing world: optional branches, hidden items, challenges, or more efficient routes may remain after the main path is clear. Some games also add explicit modes or challenges after completion. Replay value depends on what the particular game includes; the genre label does not guarantee a large map, abundant secrets, or a second mode.
Nintendo’s description of Metroid Dread says players gain abilities, return to previous areas, and find new areas and hidden upgrades. It also lists Boss Rush as a mode unlocked after completing the game—an example of an additional replay challenge, not a feature shared by every Metroidvania.
Roguelite replayability: try another combination
Roguelites often invite another attempt through variation between runs, repeated practice, and learning how to respond to changing situations. A new run can offer different combinations of routes, encounters, or choices, while player skill improves through repetition. How much variety exists, and whether it stays compelling, depends on the individual game’s systems and content.

There is no genre-wide measured replay rate established by the sources cited here. The fact that a game is called a roguelite does not establish how many hours players will replay it.

Yes. Genre elements can be combined, and “Roguevania” is one term used for games that blend roguelike or roguelite ideas with Metroidvania structure. The useful question is which loop dominates your experience: do you mainly map a persistent world and return after unlocking abilities, repeat runs that reset with some variation, or move between both?
GDC’s listing for Koji Igarashi’s 2014 session describes the Metroidvania genre as mixing action-adventure with exploration and backtracking. It is a session overview, not a transcript or a direct quotation. GDC’s listing for the Castlevania postmortem provides context for the genre’s action-adventure and exploration roots.

The world structure is not limited to 2D platformers. Nintendo describes Metroid Prime Remastered as featuring interconnected regions and doors opened with specific Arm Cannon abilities. That is ability-gated exploration in a first-person adventure, showing how the structural idea can appear in a different presentation.
How to tell which experience a game offers
Before choosing a game, look for the mechanics behind its label:
- Map: Is there one persistent, connected world, or are you moving through separate runs and their routes?
- Gates: Do new abilities open routes in places you have already visited, or do run-specific choices shape where you go next?
- Failure: Does death return you to a checkpoint in the continuing adventure, end the current run, or do something else?
- Carryover: If a run ends, which rewards, upgrades, or unlocks remain?
- Replay driver: Is the draw finding hidden paths and optional content, experiencing new run combinations, improving through repeated attempts, or some mix?
Store tags can help you find candidates, but they cannot guarantee every one of these features. Two games with the same genre label may handle map persistence, death, and progression differently; use their descriptions of those systems to predict the experience.
