mfheaacdec.dll is a Microsoft Windows Media Foundation component used by the AAC Audio Decoder MFT. If Windows reports that mfheaacdec.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
The safest repair path is to install pending updates, run DISM and SFC, install the Media Feature Pack if you use Windows N, and then repair the application that exposed the error.

What mfheaacdec.dll does
AAC is a common audio format used by games, video players, browsers, editors, streaming software, and media files. Windows Media Foundation sends AAC audio to a decoder component, and the Microsoft AAC Audio Decoder MFT converts it into audio that an application can play or process.
Microsoft documents AAC decoding through Media Foundation using the MFAudioFormat_AAC media subtype. The filename is also listed in Microsoft’s inventory for the Windows platform update.

That makes mfheaacdec.dll a Windows multimedia component, not a normal Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET file. It is also not an ordinary application plug-in that should be copied into a game folder.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit
Do not assume that every copy is 32-bit. Microsoft’s historical file table lists both architectures:
| Architecture | Historical version | File size |
|---|---|---|
| x86 | 7.0.6002.18392 | 357,376 bytes |
| x64 | 7.0.6002.18392 | 428,544 bytes |
| x86 and x64 later entries | 7.0.6002.22573 | Listed for both architectures |
The commonly reported 0.34 MB size is approximately the x86 build. The x64 entry is approximately 0.41 MiB. Those historical versions apply to the Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 platform update documentation, not automatically to every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
A 64-bit version of Windows can contain both 64-bit and 32-bit system components because it runs applications built for either architecture. Copying an x86 DLL over an x64 component, or the reverse, can cause loader and entry-point errors.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates
A failed or interrupted Windows update can leave multimedia components incomplete. Start with the built-in servicing path.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Open the application that originally displayed the
mfheaacdec.dllerror.
If the application now starts, the component was likely incomplete or incorrectly registered in the Windows servicing state. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired source. Run DISM first.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands finish.
- Test the affected application again.
A successful result may say that the restore operation completed or that Windows Resource Protection found and repaired corrupt files. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the problem may be application-specific, architecture-related, or caused by a missing media feature rather than a damaged protected file.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
C:RepairSourceWindows is only a placeholder. The source must match your Windows edition and architecture. Do not use a random folder or an installation source from a different Windows release.
When you are repeatedly hunting through repair logs and rerunning SFC or DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying issues; its free scan shows what it found, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows’ own DISM and SFC remain the appropriate first-line repair tools.
For Microsoft’s supported command sequence, see Using System File Checker in Windows.
Fix 3: Install the Media Feature Pack on Windows N
Time needed: 10–20 minutes, plus a restart
Windows N editions omit certain media technologies. If you use Windows 10 N or Windows 11 N, the missing AAC support may be expected until the Media Feature Pack is installed.
Windows 11 N
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Select View features.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it, choose Next, then select Install.
- Restart Windows.
Windows 10 N
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose Add a feature.
- Select Media Feature Pack.
- Choose Install.
- Restart Windows.
Test the application after restarting. This fix is for N editions and missing media functionality. It is not a general replacement for repairing a damaged DLL on standard Windows Home, Pro, or Enterprise editions.
Microsoft’s instructions are in Media Feature Pack for Windows N.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
If only one game, media player, editor, launcher, or encoder reports the error, the application may be damaged or using an incompatible bundled dependency. A missing-DLL message does not prove that the Windows file itself is the root cause.
Repair a Windows application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Open its menu and select Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
For traditional desktop software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Select Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts and restart the program.
For a game, open its official launcher and use Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files, depending on the launcher. If repair does not help, uninstall and reinstall the application using its official installer.
Reinstalling the application can restore its own dependencies, but it should not replace a Windows system component by copying a DLL manually.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious file. Do not restore it simply because an application says mfheaacdec.dll is missing.

mfheaacdec.dll. - Check the original file path, detection name, and action taken.
Only restore or allow a file when you are confident that it is a genuine Microsoft component from a protected Windows location and the detection is a false positive. A copy found in a temporary folder, download directory, or unexpected application folder deserves additional scrutiny.
If the detection suggests malware, leave the file quarantined, update Windows Security, run a full scan, and repair Windows with DISM and SFC afterward. Microsoft explains the available actions in Protection History in the Windows Security app.
Fix 6: Update media, chipset, and audio drivers when the failure is device-specific
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A driver update is not the normal repair for a missing Windows decoder, but it can help when the error started with a sound device, capture device, HDMI audio path, or media application that communicates with specialized hardware.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio or capture device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for relevant devices under Audio inputs and outputs and, where appropriate, Display adapters.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Prefer drivers supplied through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Do not remove a working driver merely because mfheaacdec.dll appears in an error message.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When identifying stale drivers manually means guessing among many hardware packages, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers need attention; its free scan identifies the results, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 for this component
regsvr32 mfheaacdec.dll is generally not an appropriate repair.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain ActiveX controls and COM components. The Microsoft AAC decoder is a Media Foundation transform, not a typical manually registered control.
Running the command may produce an entry-point error, a “module could not be loaded” message, or no useful change. It does not repair Windows servicing metadata, restore missing component-store files, or correct an architecture mismatch. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in the regsvr32 command reference.
Why downloading the DLL is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites websites and forum attachments. An isolated file may have:
- The wrong x86 or x64 architecture
- An incompatible version
- Missing dependent components
- Incorrect permissions or servicing state
- Malware or tampering
- A location that the application does not actually use
Even a genuine file copied into a program directory may hide the original problem. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the Media Feature Pack for Windows N, or the affected application’s official installer instead.
What usually causes the error
| Symptom | More likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Several media applications fail | Damaged Windows component or missing media feature | Updates, DISM, SFC, then Media Feature Pack for N |
| Only one application fails | Damaged or incompatible application install | Repair, verify files, or reinstall it |
| Error began after cleanup software | Removed or damaged Windows component | DISM followed by SFC |
| Error began after an update | Incomplete servicing or incompatible application | Restart, install pending updates, repair the app |
| File was quarantined | Security detection or false positive | Review Protection history before restoring |
| Entry-point error appears | Wrong version or architecture | Repair the owning Windows component or application |
| Problem began after an unknown download | Possible malware or tampering | Full security scan, then Windows repair |
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the system
First confirm that Command Prompt was opened with administrator privileges. Install pending updates, restart, and try the commands again.
If DISM still fails, use a matching installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess, then inspect the DISM and CBS logs. Repair or reinstall the application if only one program is affected.

FAQ
Is mfheaacdec.dll a Microsoft file
Yes. Microsoft identifies it as part of Windows multimedia infrastructure and lists it in its platform update file inventory.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET
Not as the normal fix. Those packages are not the documented repair path for the Microsoft AAC Media Foundation decoder. Repair Windows first, then repair the application reporting the error.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does the missing-file message prove the DLL is gone
No. The message can result from a damaged component store, an incompatible application, an antivirus action, a wrong architecture, or a dependent module that failed to load.
Where should Windows manage the file
Windows should manage the system component through Windows servicing and its component store. Do not infer that a copy in an application folder is the genuine system component.
What information should I provide if these fixes fail
Record the Windows edition and build, whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, the exact error text, the affected application, and the complete path shown for mfheaacdec.dll. Also note whether one application or several applications fail and whether antivirus recently quarantined a file.
