Micron expects memory and storage supply-demand conditions to be tighter in fiscal 2027 and 2028 than in fiscal 2026, and forecasts industry supply constraints in calendar 2027 and 2028. That is the company’s outlook, not a guarantee that every kind of RAM will be scarce until a particular date. Micron has not given a date for retail prices to fall or consumer availability to return to normal.
What Micron actually forecast
On Micron’s fiscal Q4 2026 earnings call, CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said: “Industry demand has strengthened since our last earnings call, and we expect memory and storage supply demand conditions to be much tighter in fiscal 2027 and 2028 than they were in 2026.” Micron’s investor relations site hosts the company’s earnings materials.
Mehrotra also described the calendar-year outlook as demand exceeding supply in 2027 and 2028, with greater industry tightness than in 2026. Those are two different time frames: fiscal years and calendar years do not necessarily begin or end on the same dates. Neither statement identifies a point when the market will be balanced again. In reporting on the call, Tom’s Hardware quoted Mehrotra saying, “We do not have line of sight to when supply and demand will return to balance.” Tom’s Hardware’s coverage reports Micron’s outlook and fiscal 2026 results.
Micron projected industry DRAM bit shipments to grow in the low-20s percentage range in both calendar 2027 and 2028, and NAND bit shipments in the mid-20s percentage range in those years. These are forecasts for shipment growth, not retail stock levels or price changes. Micron expects supply to grow, but says demand will still outpace it.

Why a forecast about memory supply is not a retail RAM price prediction
“RAM shortage” can make different markets sound like one. Mehrotra’s remarks primarily concern business-to-business high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI accelerators and DRAM used in servers. Ars Technica reports that Micron’s manufacturing priorities can also affect memory made for consumer devices, and that Micron no longer sells consumer RAM directly. Ars Technica’s report discusses the distinction.
- HBM: Specialized memory used with AI accelerators. It is not the same product as a desktop or laptop DIMM.
- Conventional DRAM: Used in servers as well as PCs and other devices. Industry supply pressure may reach these markets through production choices, but the effects need not be identical.
- NAND: A different type of memory used for storage, including SSDs. Micron’s NAND shipment outlook should not be treated as a forecast for RAM-kit prices.
- Contract supply versus retail: Large customers buy memory through supply agreements and allocation channels; consumers encounter finished components through retailers. A company-wide supply outlook does not tell an individual shopper what a particular kit will cost or whether it will be in stock.
The reviewed coverage does not establish how much consumer RAM prices will rise, whether they will rise at all by a specific amount, or when they will normalize. No conclusion about the cost of a PC upgrade follows directly from the shipment forecasts.

Why Micron expects tightness to persist
Micron executives attribute stronger demand to AI applications and the growing memory needs of customer platforms. They also point to server growth and AI models that are larger, support longer contexts, and handle more concurrent activity. These are management’s explanations for demand, not independently quantified predictions of what every PC buyer will experience.
The supply side has structural constraints, according to Micron:

- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
- HBM demand is growing faster than conventional DRAM demand.
- As HBM products move to newer generations, the amount of wafer capacity needed to produce a given amount of HBM—the “trade ratio”—increases.
- Micron says productivity gains from moving to newer manufacturing nodes are diminishing, so each transition may add less capacity than earlier generations did.
- Building, equipping, and qualifying cleanrooms takes time. Production then ramps gradually after a facility begins output; an announced project does not immediately translate into market supply.
That last point matters when interpreting construction announcements: new capacity can help over time, but it does not erase a near-term gap as soon as a facility is announced or opens.
What the “mountain of money” claim does—and does not—show
Tom’s Hardware reported Micron’s fiscal 2026 gross margin at 86.25%. That is a financial result for the company, not proof that Micron caused the shortage, is deliberately prolonging it, or will keep prices high. It also does not establish what consumers pay for a RAM kit: retail prices reflect products, suppliers, inventory, and sales channels beyond one company’s reported margin.

Separately, Ars Technica reported a forecast attributed to Reuters that Samsung’s Kim Taewoo expected HBM to take almost 30% of DRAM manufacturers’ wafer capacity in 2027, versus 20% in 2026. These are forecasts, not realized capacity shares, and they illustrate the expected resource demands of HBM rather than a consumer-price outlook.

Micron’s forecast is not a reason by itself to rush into a purchase: it does not say what a specific kit will cost, what will be available at a given retailer, or when prices might ease. If an upgrade is already planned, check the actual system requirements and compatibility before comparing prices.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 Compatible Only: Dual memory profiles allow you to easily select optimized settings for your platform, whether you’re running an AMD or Intel processor
- Onboard Voltage Regulation: Enables easier, more finely-tuned, and more stable overclocking through CORSAIR iCUE software than previous generation motherboard control
- Maximum Bandwidth and Tight Response Times: Optimized for peak performance on the latest AMD and Intel DDR5 motherboards
- Hand-Sorted, Tightly-Screened Memory Chips: Ensure consistent high-frequency performance with aggressive timing options
- Confirm whether the machine uses desktop DIMMs or laptop SO-DIMMs.
- Check the motherboard or laptop specifications for supported memory generation, capacity, and configuration. DDR5 is relevant only if the system supports it.
- Compare the capacity you need with the system’s supported maximum and available slots.
- Check current prices and stock for compatible kits at the time you are ready to buy; this outlook does not establish either.
For gaming, memory compatibility is a concrete upgrade question; Micron’s industry forecast alone cannot answer whether an upgrade is worthwhile for a particular game, PC, or budget.
