Microsoft acquired Smash.GG on December 2, 2020, in a deal whose price was not disclosed. The platform helped organizers run esports tournaments; it was not a game studio, league or owner of the games played at those events. The announcement came through MSN Esports, and Smash.GG said its team would join Microsoft Content Services while the service continued to support organizers across game communities. Today, the platform is Start.gg—and it announced in January 2025 that it had returned to independence from Microsoft.
What Microsoft acquired
Smash.GG was tournament infrastructure: organizers could use it to create events, register players, build and manage brackets, share event information, and handle payments or fundraising. It served amateur and professional organizers across game communities. Smash.GG said it supported more than 6,000 active organizers or events at the time; contemporary coverage repeated that company-reported figure, which should not be treated as an independently audited count. It was not a developer or publisher, an esports team or league, nor a streaming service. Nor did Microsoft acquire the tournaments, organizers or communities that used its software. The deal was for the platform and its team, not ownership of every competition run through it.
The name reflected the service’s early ties to Super Smash Bros. and the wider fighting-game scene. Its reach had expanded to include games such as Rocket League, Fortnite, Valorant, Hearthstone and Brawlhalla. Buying Smash.GG did not give Microsoft rights to Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. games or franchise. (GeekWire; Esports Insider)

Why the MSN connection matters—and what it does not prove
The acquisition was announced through MSN Esports, as Microsoft was building out an esports hub that gathered related coverage and Twitch content. The platform could complement that kind of discovery: content can introduce people to a competitive scene, while tournament software helps organizers publish events and manage participation. That is a plausible strategic fit, not a publicly confirmed product roadmap. The company did not announce that Smash.GG would be folded into MSN. (GeekWire)
Likewise, this was not publicly presented as an Xbox Studios acquisition. Reports said Smash.GG’s team would join Microsoft Content Services and the service would remain available to organizers across games. Xbox tournaments, Halo events, a console app or a PlayFab integration were potential uses discussed around the deal, not announced terms or confirmed plans. (PC Gamer; Windows Central)

That distinction matters. Microsoft might reasonably have valued an established event-management service and its relationships with grassroots organizers, which could support competitions across platforms and games. But the public announcement did not establish a single purpose such as reviving Halo esports or making tournaments exclusive to Xbox. It was an infrastructure acquisition, not the purchase of a major game franchise.

Smash.GG was founded in 2015. The acquisition announcement did not disclose the purchase price. The platform said it would continue operating as a self-service tool for tournament organizers across game communities, with its team joining Microsoft Content Services. Those continuity assurances were important to a service used by communities beyond Microsoft’s own games. (PC Gamer; Esports Insider)

A useful example of how the tool could serve beyond Xbox is Microsoft’s later use of Smash.GG for a multi-game inclusive esports event with Special Olympics. That shows a practical application of tournament infrastructure; it does not, by itself, establish that the event was the original reason for the acquisition. (Special Olympics)

The service later took the name Start.gg and continued as a tournament and esports community platform. On January 31, 2025, Start.gg announced that it was returning to independence from Microsoft. The company said original Smash.GG team members, including co-founder Chris Ogle, would lead the business, and described its aim as continuing to serve as a self-service esports platform. That announcement also described a transition away from Microsoft services. Start.gg said existing users could retain Microsoft Account login, while new users could no longer create accounts using that login method. The details appeared in the company’s January 2025 transition update, so users should check Start.gg’s current account and support information rather than assume every migration detail remains unchanged. What organizers should know about fees
Start.gg’s January 2025 update announced a 6% platform fee on online transactions, calculated on the participant’s subtotal and added to the participant’s total rather than taken out of the organizer’s proceeds. It said the fee would not apply to on-site or cash payments, and gave February 14, 2025, as the launch date. The same update said organizers taking online payments should reconnect PayPal accounts through the revised setup; Stripe accounts did not need to be reconnected.
Those are the terms reported in that dated transition notice, not confirmation of Start.gg’s pricing or payment setup in 2026. Organizers planning an event should verify current fees, payment options and account requirements directly with Start.gg before opening registration. In particular, “self-service” or access to event tools should not be confused with a guarantee that online payment processing carries no fee.
The takeaway
Microsoft’s 2020 purchase gave it an established tool for running esports events and a connection to the organizers who used it. The announcement’s MSN and Microsoft Content Services context is better documented than any Xbox-specific plan. Smash.GG’s later life as Start.gg—and its return to independence in 2025—makes the story more than a simple expansion of Microsoft’s gaming business.
