Microsoft eliminated approximately 1,900 gaming roles on January 25, 2024, affecting employees across Activision Blizzard, Xbox and ZeniMax. The cuts represented about 8.6% of Microsoft Gaming’s roughly 22,000-person workforce and came around three months after Microsoft completed its approximately $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
This was a restructuring of Microsoft’s broader gaming organization—not the closure of Xbox. Microsoft did not publish a complete breakdown by studio, country, department or job type.

Microsoft Gaming chief Phil Spencer described the decision as painful and said affected employees would receive transition support, including severance informed by local employment laws. The exact terms could vary by country, employment status, contract and applicable labor regulations.

Why the cuts followed the Activision Blizzard acquisition
Microsoft announced its plan to acquire Activision Blizzard in January 2022 and completed the transaction in October 2023. Microsoft’s announcement welcoming the company to Team Xbox is available in its October 2023 employee letter.

The layoffs arrived roughly three months after the deal closed. The timing places them squarely in the early integration period, when Microsoft was bringing together Xbox, Activision Blizzard and ZeniMax alongside their publishing, support, marketing, administrative and corporate operations. That creates a plausible context for overlapping roles and cost reductions.
However, the public evidence does not prove that the acquisition alone caused every job elimination. Microsoft’s stated explanation was broader: it said the organization was being aligned around growth opportunities and a sustainable cost structure. It is also not established that the cuts were caused by Game Pass, artificial intelligence or financial distress.
Which parts of Microsoft Gaming were affected?
The reported scope included all three major parts of Microsoft Gaming:

- Xbox, including Microsoft’s existing console, publishing and game-development operations.
- ZeniMax, the parent company of Bethesda and its studios.
Microsoft did not provide a complete official studio-by-studio or department-by-department tally. As a result, it would be misleading to describe all 1,900 affected roles as developers, Activision Blizzard employees or corporate positions. Public reporting discussed areas such as publishing, marketing, support and administration, but no comprehensive breakdown was confirmed.
Blizzard also lost leaders and canceled a game
The restructuring period brought several major changes at Blizzard. Blizzard president Mike Ybarra departed Microsoft, and chief design officer and co-founder Allen Adham also left.
Blizzard additionally canceled an unannounced survival game reportedly known internally as Project Odyssey. The cancellation showed that Microsoft and Blizzard were reassessing projects as well as headcount. But the available reporting does not establish that every employee affected by the 1,900-role reduction worked on that game, or that the cancellation alone caused the layoffs.

What the layoffs meant for games and players
The confirmed consequences were the job reductions, Blizzard’s leadership changes and the cancellation of its unannounced survival project. Beyond that, the effects were uncertain.

But the announcement did not establish that Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, Minecraft or any other announced game would be canceled, delayed or weakened.
In particular, there was no evidence in the cited reporting that Microsoft was abandoning Xbox or canceling Call of Duty. A reduction in the size of a gaming organization does not, by itself, reveal how resources will be allocated among its remaining projects.

What Microsoft did not disclose
The approximately 1,900 figure was a company-level estimate. Microsoft did not publicly provide:
- A complete list of affected studios
- A regional breakdown
- A department-by-department count
- A full distinction between development, publishing, support and administrative roles
- A list of every project that might be delayed, changed or canceled
That matters because headlines describing the event simply as “Xbox layoffs” can obscure the fact that Activision Blizzard and ZeniMax were also included. Conversely, assigning a precise number of cuts to a particular studio or game goes beyond what Microsoft publicly confirmed.
Do not confuse the 2024 cuts with Microsoft’s 2026 restructuring
This article concerns the January 25, 2024 reduction of approximately 1,900 gaming roles. It is separate from Xbox’s later restructuring announced on July 6, 2026.

In that later announcement, Xbox described a plan affecting approximately 3,200 roles through fiscal 2027, including about 1,600 immediate reductions. It also said four studios would move to new management. The changes covered parts of Activision, Bethesda/ZeniMax, Blizzard, King, Mojang and Xbox Game Studios. Microsoft separately announced approximately 4,800 companywide role eliminations that day.
The later event should not be substituted into the 2024 story: “nearly 2,000 gaming jobs” refers to Microsoft’s January 2024 layoffs.
