Microsoft Edge Surf is a free game built into the Edge browser. Open Microsoft Edge and enter edge://surf in the address bar to play. It works as a standalone game and may also appear when Edge detects that you are offline. The current official documentation identifies three modes—Endless, Time Trial, and Zig Zag—plus multiple input methods and accessibility settings.
This guide explains how to launch Surf, choose the right mode, use its controls, understand its secrets, and separate Microsoft-confirmed features from community-reported cheats that may change between Edge versions.
What is Microsoft Edge Surf?
Edge Surf is a surfing-themed browser game in which you steer a character around islands, obstacles, hazards, and the Kraken. Runs use hearts for survivability and temporary boosts for bursts of speed. Microsoft introduced Surf in the stable Edge channel in 2020, beginning with Edge version 83.0.478.37. Its design was inspired partly by the classic Windows game SkiFree.
Surf does not require a separate download when Microsoft Edge is already installed. Availability can still vary by device, market, browser version, and administrator settings. Microsoft documents the game on its official Edge Surf page.

How to open Edge Surf
Desktop
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the browser address bar—not a search box on a webpage.
- Enter
edge://surf. - Press Enter.
- Choose a surfer, select a mode, and start playing.
Use the edge:// address exactly as shown. It is an internal Edge page, not a normal website URL.
Playing while offline
When Edge detects that your device has no internet connection, it may show an entry point to Surf on its offline page. That behavior is useful, but it is less predictable than opening edge://surf directly. Microsoft originally promoted Surf as an offline-friendly game in its Edge stable-channel announcement.
Mobile availability
Microsoft’s current Surf information says the game is available on mobile, but the interface and supported inputs can differ between Android, iOS, and desktop Edge. Try entering edge://surf in the Edge mobile address bar. Do not assume that desktop keyboard shortcuts, controller mappings, or every Easter egg will work identically on a phone.
The three official game modes
| Mode | Objective | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Endless | Travel as far as possible while avoiding hazards and the Kraken. | Relaxed play, survival practice, and distance records. |
| Time Trial | Finish a fixed course as quickly as possible. Coins reduce the completion time. | Route memorization and fastest-time attempts. |
| Zig Zag | Pass through gates consecutively. Missing a gate resets the streak. | Combo, precision, and streak challenges. |
Endless
Endless has no fixed finish line. Your main goal is distance, while hearts, boosts, and route decisions determine how long the run lasts. The Kraken remains a persistent threat, so surviving the next dangerous section is usually more valuable than taking a risky line for a minor collectible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRescuing a friend can temporarily protect you from pursuers. Community reports commonly identify that friend as a dog, but Microsoft’s official wording confirms the temporary protection mechanic without promising every detail of the community description.
Time Trial
Time Trial uses the same fixed course on repeat attempts. Because the route does not change, improvement comes from memorizing turns, choosing safer lines, and collecting coins when they reduce more time than the detour costs. Distance is not the important measurement here: compare completion times instead.
Zig Zag
Zig Zag challenges you to pass through gates in sequence. Each successful gate extends the streak; missing one resets it. Since survival alone does not produce a strong streak, line up with the next gate early and make small corrections rather than swinging aggressively from side to side.
Is there a Collector mode?
Some secondary articles mention a fourth mode called Collector. Microsoft’s current official Surf pages consistently identify only Endless, Time Trial, and Zig Zag. Treat Collector as unconfirmed unless it is visibly present in your current Edge build.
Controls and supported inputs
Microsoft confirms support for keyboard, mouse, touch, Xbox controllers, PlayStation controllers, Nintendo Switch Pro controllers, and the Xbox Adaptive Controller. Exact controls can vary with the platform and current build, so open the game’s settings or help menu for the authoritative mapping shown on your device.

| Input | What to check |
|---|---|
| Keyboard | Steering, starting, slowing, and boost keys in the in-game instructions. |
| Mouse | Whether movement, clicking, or both control the surfer in the current mode. |
| Touch | The swipe and tap gestures shown by the mobile interface. |
| Controller | The button mapping displayed in Surf’s settings. |
Rather than relying on an old keyboard chart copied from another version, use the instructions inside Surf. This is especially important if you switch from desktop to mobile or connect a controller.
Settings and accessibility
Open the settings icon in the upper-right corner of the game to review available options.
High visibility mode
High visibility mode highlights collision or hit-box areas around objects. Enable it if obstacles or gate boundaries are difficult to judge.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Reduced speed mode
Reduced speed mode slows the game, giving you more reaction time. It is useful when learning the course, practicing gate alignment, or adapting to a new input method. For a normal score attempt, switch it off if you want results under standard speed conditions.
High scores and statistics
Surf keeps a separate high-score record for each mode, and the Surf overview says you can reset your statistics. These are personal, browser-specific records—not proof of a universal online leaderboard. Microsoft’s overview is available at Edge Surf.
Edge Surf cheats and hidden secrets
Microsoft confirms that Surf contains cheat codes or secrets, including effects related to unlimited hearts, unlimited boosts, and an additional playable character. However, Microsoft’s current feature page does not publish a complete list of exact code strings. The entries below should therefore be treated as community-documented and version-sensitive.
Unlimited hearts: MICROSOFT
Community documentation reports that typing MICROSOFT on the main character-selection or start screen activates unlimited hearts. Enter it before starting the run, not after gameplay has begun.
This is not guaranteed to work in every current Edge build. Community reports also warn that cheat-enabled runs may not count as legitimate scores, so use the code for experimentation rather than personal-best attempts. See the related Microsoft Q&A discussion for the reported method.
Unlimited boosts: EDGE
Another community-reported code is EDGE, entered on the main menu before starting a run. It reportedly enables unlimited boosts. As with the heart code, the exact behavior may depend on the current version and platform.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
NinjaCat character code
Community guides report that this Konami-style sequence can reveal an extra playable character commonly identified as NinjaCat:
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A
Enter the sequence on the character-selection screen before beginning a run. Microsoft’s official material confirms an “iconic playable character” secret but does not name that character NinjaCat, so the identification remains community-attributed. See the reported NinjaCat sequence for the commonly documented input.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Friend or dog protection
In Endless mode, rescuing a friend can temporarily protect the surfer from pursuers. Community reports describe the friend as a dog and associate the effect with protection from the Kraken, but do not treat it as permanent invulnerability. The safest wording is Microsoft’s: the rescue provides temporary protection from pursuers. Additional discussion appears in this Microsoft Q&A thread.
Octopus and whirlpool Easter egg
A Microsoft Community support response describes a version-sensitive octopus-related event:
- Start an Endless run.
- Hold the left-arrow input.
- Continue until reaching an area reportedly containing many tentacles and three whirlpools.
- Enter a whirlpool.
The response places the encounter around the 700–900 point range, but says the area may not appear every time. Do not present that score range as a guaranteed trigger or assume the Easter egg still exists in every build. Details are reported in the octopus Easter egg discussion.
Browser zoom trick
Older community instructions suggest reducing browser zoom to roughly 50% so more of the play area is visible. This is an exploit-like visual workaround, not an official Surf cheat. It may fail with modern layouts, may distort the interface, and should not be expected to work on mobile.
Avoid instructions that edit JavaScript, modify game files, or tamper with the browser page. They are unsupported, unnecessary for normal play, and can break the game or invalidate meaningful score comparisons.
How to improve your score
General survival
- Make deliberate movements instead of constantly zigzagging.
- Prioritize avoiding collisions over collecting every item.
- Save boosts for dangerous sections or escapes rather than using them automatically.
- Preserve hearts for unavoidable hazards and late-run mistakes.
- Learn recurring obstacle spacing through repeated attempts.
- Use High visibility mode while learning collision boundaries.
- Use Reduced speed mode for practice, then return to normal speed for standard attempts.
Endless strategy
Think in terms of controlled survival. Do not spend a boost to collect a low-value item if the route leads directly toward an obstacle. When pursuers become the immediate danger, use the friend-rescue protection if it is available. Track your own distance benchmarks rather than trusting unsupported “world record” claims.
Time Trial strategy
- Learn the fixed course with Reduced speed mode if available.
- Identify the safest repeatable route.
- Collect coins when the time reduction outweighs the detour or added collision risk.
- Practice the difficult sections until you can reproduce them without emergency movement.
- Compare attempts by finish time, not distance.
Zig Zag strategy
Begin lining up for the next gate before reaching the current one. After passing a gate, avoid a large corrective swing that sends you away from the following gate. Because a missed gate resets the streak, a stable line is usually more valuable than a dramatic last-second correction. High visibility mode can help when gate edges blend into the course.

Should you use the cheats?
Use the codes when your goal is exploring secrets, testing a hidden character, or simply playing with unusual effects. Avoid them when chasing a personal best, comparing statistics with friends, recording a speedrun, or trying to maintain a fair challenge.
The available official sources confirm the existence of cheat effects but do not define one universal scoring policy for every version. Therefore, say that cheats may not count toward normal scoring or may compromise comparisons, rather than claiming that every cheat run is always disabled.

edge://surf does not open
- Confirm that you are using Microsoft Edge, not Chrome or another browser.
- Enter the address in the browser address bar and keep the
edge://prefix. - Update Edge and try again.
- Try a desktop Edge installation if the mobile version behaves differently.
- On a work or school device, ask the administrator whether Surf has been disabled.
Microsoft provides an AllowSurfGame policy that organizations can use to disable the game. If that policy is applied, reinstalling Edge may not solve the problem.
A cheat code does nothing
- Return to the main menu or character-selection screen.
- Enter the code before starting the run.
- Use a physical keyboard for letter codes or the directional sequence.
- Check that the game has focus and that the sequence was typed correctly.
- Reload
edge://surfand test a normal run first.
The code may have changed, been removed, or be unavailable on your platform. Do not assume that a code documented for an older desktop build remains active everywhere.
The game feels too fast or collisions seem unfair
Enable Reduced speed mode and High visibility mode. You can also try a controller or touch input if keyboard steering is uncomfortable. If the layout looks distorted, reset browser zoom to its normal setting before testing again.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I disable Edge Surf?
On managed installations, administrators can use the AllowSurfGame Microsoft Edge policy to disable it. Personal users generally do not need to disable the feature.
Why is Surf missing on my work computer?
Your organization may have disabled it through policy. Ask your administrator to check AllowSurfGame, and remember that device, market, and browser-version differences can also affect availability.
Is Collector an official fourth mode?
Microsoft’s current official pages list only Endless, Time Trial, and Zig Zag. Collector should be considered unconfirmed unless it appears in your installed build.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Open Edge Surf with edge://surf, start with Endless or Reduced speed mode, and use the in-game settings for current controls. The three official modes are Endless, Time Trial, and Zig Zag. Codes such as MICROSOFT, EDGE, and the NinjaCat sequence are community-reported secrets, so test them for fun—not as guaranteed, score-valid features.
