Microsoft’s Default Game Profiles automatically adjust power and frame-rate limits in selected games on the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. The feature is intended to balance smooth play with battery use; it is not a universal profile system for every ROG Ally or every PC game.
What Microsoft’s Default Game Profiles do
A Default Game Profile is a set of per-game device settings, not a graphics preset you create yourself. Microsoft says the profiles set thermal design power (TDP) and frame-rate (FPS) limits to help keep gameplay stable at a 30 FPS minimum target while avoiding unnecessary power use. They do not automatically change every in-game setting, such as resolution, textures, or upscaling.
Microsoft benchmarks games and delivers profile data through an Xbox service; ASUS Armoury Crate applies the device-level settings. A profile is active while its game is in focus. Switching to another app turns it off, and returning to the game reapplies it. Microsoft introduced the feature as a preview on November 25, 2025.

Microsoft names the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. These are the Xbox-branded handhelds launched worldwide on October 16, 2025, not alternate names for every device in ASUS’s ROG Ally family. Xbox Wire announced that worldwide hardware launch.

The available Microsoft documentation does not confirm support for the original 2023 ROG Ally or the 2024 ROG Ally X. Owners of those older models should not assume the feature works on their device.
Which games get profiles?
Microsoft’s feature description covers selected games sold through the Xbox Store on PC. It does not establish automatic profile support for every Xbox PC title or for games installed through Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Battle.net, or an emulator. The ROG Xbox Ally hardware can run games from other PC storefronts, but that broader Windows compatibility is separate from profile eligibility; ASUS describes the handheld’s Windows and storefront capabilities.

The counts Microsoft has published are tied to different points in the rollout, so they should not be treated as a permanent current total:

- November 25, 2025: Microsoft described nearly 70 popular games in the first wave.
- May 4, 2026: Microsoft said it was adding more than two dozen games to the 40 games supported at launch. Read Microsoft’s expansion announcement.
The published counts use different rollout descriptions and do not provide a reliable, complete current list here. Check the device’s Armoury Crate Command Center/Game Bar widget while playing to see whether a profile is available for a specific game.

How much battery life can a profile save?
Microsoft’s example is Hollow Knight: Silksong: the company says its Default Game Profile can provide nearly an hour more battery life than Performance mode while maintaining smooth 120 FPS gameplay. That is Microsoft’s result for that game and comparison, not a promise for other titles or a general estimate for every owner. Xbox Wire published the example with the November 2025 update.
Actual runtime also depends on factors such as screen brightness, refresh rate, Wi-Fi, audio, background activity, and whether the handheld is plugged in. A battery-oriented profile may not suit someone seeking maximum frame rates or playing docked on an external display.

How to check for a profile
Microsoft’s confirmed access point is the Armoury Crate Command Center/Game Bar widget. The November 2025 Xbox update advises installing the latest Armoury Crate SE, Xbox PC app, and Windows 11 updates before trying the preview.

- Install available updates for Windows 11, the Xbox PC app, and Armoury Crate SE.
- Launch a supported Xbox PC game.
- Open the Armoury Crate Command Center/Game Bar widget.
- Check whether a Default Game Profile is shown as applied; use the widget’s toggle if it offers one.
The exact screens can vary by software version; Microsoft’s announcement does not specify a deeper Windows Settings path.

If no profile appears
- Check the device name: Microsoft lists the ROG Xbox Ally models, not the older ROG Ally models.
- Check the game and storefront: The title may not be supported, or it may be installed from a storefront outside the documented Xbox Store PC coverage.
- Update the required software: Install the latest Windows 11, Xbox PC app, and Armoury Crate SE updates.
- Check focus: Profiles turn off when the game loses focus and reapply when it regains focus.
- Review manual settings: Existing Armoury Crate tuning may differ from the automatic profile behavior you expect.
- Allow for rollout changes: The feature was introduced in preview, and availability or supported titles may vary across software versions.
Automatic profiles versus manual tuning
Profiles are useful if you want Microsoft and ASUS’s per-game TDP and FPS choices without adjusting them yourself. They are less useful if you prefer maximum performance, want custom power or fan behavior, or mostly play unsupported titles. Armoury Crate’s manual controls remain the alternative: users can adjust TDP and FPS through the Command Center/Game Bar widget or configure per-game settings in Armoury Crate. Microsoft’s feature announcement describes both the automatic profiles and manual controls.
Also distinguish profiles from Microsoft’s separate compatibility labels. Handheld Compatibility and Windows Performance Fit help set expectations about controller support, legibility, and likely performance. Labels such as “Handheld Optimized,” “Mostly Compatible,” “Should play great,” and “Should play well” are not Default Game Profiles and do not mean that a game receives automatic TDP and FPS settings.
Does this feature justify buying a ROG Xbox Ally?
It is a convenience and battery-management feature, not a standalone reason to replace a working handheld. ASUS’s US product pages listed the ROG Xbox Ally at $599.99 and the ROG Xbox Ally X at $999.99 when checked August 18, 2026; those are US listings, not guaranteed current prices elsewhere.
