Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is a Windows PC flight simulator released on November 19, 2024. It is available through PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, as well as in four editions on the Microsoft/Xbox storefront. Before choosing an edition, check that your PC meets the published specification: the recommended-class listing calls for 32 GB of RAM, a discrete graphics card with 8 GB of VRAM, and 50 GB of storage. A joystick or yoke is optional, not required.
What is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024?
Developed by Asobo Studio and published under the Xbox Game Studios brand, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is a standalone simulator and sequel to Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020), not an expansion that requires the earlier game. How can you play it on Windows?
The Windows PC version launched on November 19, 2024. Microsoft announced it would be available on day one through PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Game Pass terms and availability can change; check the current Xbox listing for your region. The official material cited here does not establish one stable retail price across regions and editions, so use the live store price rather than an older quoted amount.
What PC specifications does it require?
The Xbox listing specifies Windows 10/11 with updates, DirectX 12, 50 GB of storage, and the following processor, graphics and memory targets. These are published requirements, not a promise of a particular frame rate or performance level on every system.

Confirm your PC against the current Xbox product listing before installing, since published requirements may change. The listing specifies storage capacity, but the cited material does not establish download size or the internet connection needed for a particular setup.
Which edition should you choose?
The editions differ in included aircraft and handcrafted airports. The figures below are from the Xbox product listing current in 2026; check the live listing for the contents offered in your region.

Choose based on whether you want the extra aircraft and airports, and—if considering Aviator—whether its 30 Microsoft-published Marketplace aircraft are worth having included. Store prices are region- and edition-specific, so compare the current prices and contents on the Xbox listing rather than assuming a fixed price difference.
Do Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) add-ons carry over?
Microsoft describes the 2024 release as a standalone sequel, but says current aircraft and airports from Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020), along with virtually all Marketplace add-ons, will be supported in 2024. That wording does not promise compatibility for every add-on. Check the official Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 FAQ and the status of a specific add-on if it is essential to your setup.

Do you need a joystick, yoke or other flight controls?
No dedicated flight-simulation control is required by the published Windows specification. You can start with a gamepad or other supported input and add dedicated hardware if you want more physical axes and controls. Microsoft’s support FAQ names the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, yokes, rudder pedals, throttle quadrants, and the X52, X52 Pro and X56 HOTAS devices. That list identifies supported hardware; it is not a requirement to buy one particular controller. Consult the support FAQ for its current guidance.

What should you check before buying or installing?
- Compare your processor, graphics card and VRAM, RAM, storage, operating system and DirectX support with the published Windows requirements.
- Decide whether Standard’s included fleet is sufficient or whether the additional aircraft and airports in another edition matter to you.
- If you own 2020 add-ons, verify the status of any must-have item; Microsoft says virtually all Marketplace add-ons are supported, not that every add-on is guaranteed to work.
- Check the current regional storefront for edition contents, price and Game Pass availability, and choose controls only if they suit how you want to play.
