Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024’s November 19, 2024 launch was disrupted by overloaded servers. Microsoft said the service handling data requests for new simulator systems caused delays and errors; players reported long initial loads and missing aircraft. Access improved in stages, and Microsoft later said the launch-period access and streaming problems were resolved. Those dated updates do not confirm the simulator’s live server status today.
Why did Flight Simulator 2024 struggle at launch?
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 launched on November 19, 2024. In a November 20 update, the Microsoft Flight Simulator Team said: “The server responsible for handling data requests got overloaded, causing delays and errors.” The service was handling requests for new simulator systems, including career mode and missions. A contemporaneous forum notice also described many players initializing the simulator at once and generating a large volume of server requests.
The result was not simply a queue on a login screen: players also faced very long initial loading and aircraft missing from the experience. Microsoft said it was admitting players at a steady pace after addressing the immediate issue.

These statements describe Microsoft’s reports at those dates. They are not a live status check and cannot establish whether servers are currently up or down.

Were all launch problems caused by server overload?
No. Microsoft separately identified compatibility problems with some third-party Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 add-ons, particularly non-aircraft Marketplace content. The team said that content could contribute to long loads, crashes and other issues in Flight Simulator 2024, and temporarily deactivated it while investigating. That was a separate problem from the overloaded service.
Are the Flight Simulator 2024 servers down now?
The November 2024 recovery announcements do not answer that question for October 3, 2026. Check Xbox service status for current service information. A past outage and an individual connection problem can produce similar symptoms, so a current status check is more useful than assuming the launch issue is still happening.

What to try if you cannot connect
If Xbox services appear available but you still cannot connect, Microsoft’s connectivity guidance recommends checking local network factors and selecting a nearby simulator region. These steps can help diagnose an individual connection problem; they cannot resolve a Microsoft-side service outage.
Microsoft says port forwarding does not improve connection quality to game servers. It may help only when the simulator cannot contact its servers even though the player is online. Avoid treating router changes as a remedy for the 2024 launch-wide overload.

Once connected: controls are a separate question
On PC, Microsoft says a gamepad or joystick is required to control aircraft. Its hardware setup guide and peripheral guide cover supported devices and the joystick-versus-yoke choice. Check platform compatibility before buying: most PC flight peripherals are not compatible with Xbox Series X|S unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise. A peripheral affects flying controls, not server access, login or streaming.
