Its confirmed hardware roadmap points instead to Project Helix, a next-generation Xbox console whose developer alpha hardware is planned for 2027. ASUS, however, has announced the ROG Xbox Ally X20, a new Xbox-branded handheld in the ASUS-made Ally family. Its price, retail release date and full specifications remain unconfirmed.
That distinction matters: Microsoft’s current handheld strategy is centered on bringing the Xbox experience to Windows gaming devices, not on selling a Microsoft-built portable console this year.
Three different products are being confused
“Microsoft’s Xbox handheld” can mean three separate things:
- A first-party Microsoft handheld: hardware designed, owned and sold by Microsoft as an Xbox console product.
- The ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X: Windows 11 handheld gaming PCs made by ASUS in collaboration with Xbox and AMD.
- The ROG Xbox Ally X20: an ASUS-announced refresh associated with the Xbox Ally family.
Only the third is a newly announced 2026 product. The original ROG Xbox Ally models launched worldwide on October 16, 2025, so describing them as a 2026 Xbox handheld launch is inaccurate.

What Microsoft has actually confirmed
Microsoft’s March 2026 Xbox Developer Summit announcement identifies Project Helix as the next-generation first-party Xbox console. Microsoft says custom AMD-based alpha hardware is planned for developers beginning in 2027.
The announcement does not identify Project Helix as a handheld, and it does not provide a consumer handheld release date for 2026. It also does not prove that Microsoft has permanently abandoned portable hardware. The accurate conclusion is narrower: there is no confirmed first-party Microsoft Xbox handheld launching this year.
Microsoft’s confirmed handheld-related work is primarily software. Xbox mode is being brought to Windows 11, beginning with a rollout in select markets in April, building on the Xbox-focused interface first introduced on the ROG Xbox Ally devices. The broader direction is an Xbox ecosystem that can span consoles, PCs and handheld PCs.
What the existing ROG Xbox Ally devices are
The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are Windows-based gaming PCs, not portable Xbox Series consoles. They provide an Xbox-oriented full-screen interface, an Xbox button and Game Bar access, plus an aggregated library that can include Xbox and other PC storefronts.

How Xbox games work on an Ally
The Xbox branding does not mean every Xbox Series X|S game runs locally. Games reach the handheld through several different routes:
- Native PC installation: the game must have a compatible Windows PC version and meet the handheld’s requirements.
- Xbox Play Anywhere: supported purchases can provide access across Xbox consoles and PC, with compatible saves and achievements carried between devices.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: supported games can be streamed with a suitable Game Pass subscription and a reliable internet connection.
- Xbox Remote Play: games can be streamed from the user’s own Xbox console after Remote Play is configured.
Cloud Gaming and Remote Play depend on network quality, latency, region, server availability and game support. Storefront launchers, account logins, DRM, anti-cheat systems and game-specific controller support can also affect the Windows-PC experience.
What is the ROG Xbox Ally X20?
ASUS announced the ROG Xbox Ally X20 on June 1, 2026, as part of its ROG 20th-anniversary product push. The official announcement associates it with the Xbox Ally family and highlights an OLED display.

Several important details are still missing from the official material:
- US retail price;
- exact consumer release date;
- market-by-market availability;
- whether it will be sold as a normal standalone handheld or chiefly as a bundle;
- processor, battery, refresh rate and storage specifications;
- how much its performance will differ from the existing Ally X.
A Tom’s Guide report said ASUS expected the X20 before the 2026 holiday period, but that is secondary reporting rather than a firm ASUS retail commitment. The X20 should therefore be treated as an announced product with unresolved buying details, not as a fully priced and date-confirmed release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy an Ally, Ally X or wait?
| Your priority | Most sensible option |
|---|---|
| You want an Xbox-branded handheld now and want to spend less | Consider the ROG Xbox Ally at the current $599.99 US price signal. |
| You want more memory, storage and headroom for demanding PC games | Consider the ROG Xbox Ally X, listed at $999.99 in the US. |
| You specifically want OLED or anniversary styling | Wait for confirmed X20 pricing, availability and specifications. |
| You need native access to a particular Xbox game | Check whether it has a compatible PC version, Play Anywhere support, cloud support or Remote Play access before buying. |
| You want Microsoft-designed hardware | Wait for an official first-party announcement; no 2026 consumer handheld date is confirmed. |
The X20 may be the more interesting option for shoppers who can wait, but its value cannot be judged responsibly until ASUS confirms the hardware, price and release markets. The existing Ally X is also a poor choice for buyers who simply want a portable Xbox console with universal Series X|S compatibility.
The bottom line
Microsoft is not confirming a first-party Xbox handheld for 2026. Its current move is to extend Xbox mode and Xbox services across Windows handhelds, while Project Helix remains the next confirmed first-party hardware milestone, with developer alpha hardware planned for 2027.
ASUS is the company with the nearer-term Xbox-branded hardware possibility: it has already released the ROG Xbox Ally line and announced the OLED-equipped ROG Xbox Ally X20. But the X20 is an ASUS handheld made with Xbox—not Microsoft’s own portable console—and its final price and release date still need official confirmation.
