Microsoft announced on July 24, 2019, that Xbox One would stop accepting Cortana commands spoken through a headset. The change removed the console’s built-in headset interaction, not every Xbox voice feature: Microsoft redirected voice control to cloud-based Cortana, Alexa, and later Google Assistant integrations.
What Microsoft actually removed
The affected feature was the ability to speak directly to Cortana through an Xbox-connected headset. Xbox Insider release notes described that behavior as intentionally unavailable, rather than a temporary malfunction (Microsoft’s July 31, 2019 preview notes).
Microsoft also temporarily disabled voice dictation in the Xbox One virtual keyboard while it worked on an alternative. That was a separate text-entry change; it did not mean that every form of keyboard input disappeared.
Why Microsoft made the change
Microsoft said Xbox was moving away from on-console assistant experiences toward cloud-based assistant experiences. Its announcement did not attribute the decision to poor usage, cost, privacy concerns, hardware limitations, or any other specific business or technical cause (Microsoft’s July 24, 2019 announcement).

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
The practical difference was where speech was processed. Instead of a headset addressing an assistant built into the console experience, an external app, speaker, or cloud assistant handled the request and sent an Xbox command through an account-linked service.
What Xbox One users could still do
Microsoft said the Xbox Skill for Cortana remained available through the Cortana app on iOS, Android, and Windows, as well as through a Harman Kardon Invoke speaker—the device named in Microsoft’s 2019 announcement, not a current product recommendation. Supported examples included:
- Powering an Xbox One on.
- Adjusting console volume.
- Launching games and apps.
- Capturing screenshots.
- Performing other Xbox-control tasks supported by the skill.
Those routes required a compatible device or app, an Xbox account linked to the assistant service, an internet connection, and regional support. They were not identical to having a microphone on the headset answer locally, and command vocabulary could differ between assistants.
How this fit Xbox’s broader voice strategy
The headset change was a migration, not an abandonment of voice control. Microsoft had already been moving Xbox commands to external assistants.

2018: Cortana and Alexa devices
On September 6, 2018, Microsoft announced the Xbox Skill for Cortana and Alexa-enabled devices, extending control beyond Kinect and headset interactions to Windows 10 PCs, Amazon Echo hardware, the Harman Kardon Invoke, Sonos One, and Cortana or Alexa apps on iOS and Android (Xbox announcement).
An Xbox update on October 11, 2018, made the Cortana and Alexa Xbox Skill generally available in the United States. Microsoft listed commands for powering the console on or off, changing volume, launching games and apps, managing broadcasts, and taking screenshots (October 2018 update notes).
2019: Google Assistant joins the options
On September 26, 2019, Microsoft announced an Xbox Action for Google Assistant in public beta. It could power an Xbox on or off, launch games and apps, and control video playback (Microsoft’s Google Assistant announcement).

Who was affected most?
Most Xbox One owners
People who never used Cortana through a headset would likely notice little beyond the temporary loss of virtual-keyboard dictation. Controller navigation remained available.

Headset Cortana users
These users lost the direct “Hey Cortana” style interaction through the console headset and needed a phone, PC, smart speaker, or another supported assistant device instead.
Kinect owners
The announcement specifically addressed headset-based Cortana commands. It should not be read as proof that every Kinect-related voice feature was removed at the same time. Microsoft’s documented direction was to move Xbox voice interaction away from local, on-console assistant experiences.
Accessibility users
Voice commands and dictation can reduce reliance on a controller. The temporary keyboard-dictation removal therefore mattered separately from game-launch and console-control commands, although Microsoft did not quantify the number of affected users or describe the severity of the accessibility impact.
Xbox Insiders
Insiders encountered the change first because preview rings received the new behavior before the planned fall 2019 public rollout. A preview-ring result was not, by itself, evidence that every retail Xbox One had changed that day.

What the headline gets wrong
“Cortana is gone from Xbox One” is too broad. The precise statement is that Microsoft removed Cortana from the console’s headset-based voice-command experience while preserving Xbox control through supported external apps and devices. The Xbox One hardware was not declared unsupported, and voice control itself was not discontinued.
The transition also introduced trade-offs. A headset was convenient during play and required no separate speaker, while an external assistant could work across a room and power on the console before a controller was picked up. External routes, however, added account-linking, network, device, language, and regional dependencies. A command working through Cortana did not guarantee identical behavior through Alexa or Google Assistant.
If headset commands stopped working
- Check whether the console is running a preview build or the public software branch; Insiders received the change first.
- Do not treat the missing headset response as a microphone fault if the update intentionally removed headset Cortana support.
- Use controller navigation, or configure a supported Cortana, Alexa, or Google Assistant route through the Xbox Skill or Xbox Action.
- Verify that the Xbox and assistant accounts are linked and that the service is available in your country and language.
- For text entry, remember that the affected feature was Xbox virtual-keyboard dictation; ordinary controller typing was not removed by this announcement.
Bottom line
Microsoft was de-emphasizing Cortana as a console-native Xbox One interface, not eliminating Xbox voice control. The July 2019 change specifically ended headset-based Cortana commands, temporarily removed keyboard dictation, and shifted users toward cloud-mediated control through Cortana apps, Alexa devices, and—soon afterward—Google Assistant.
