Microsoft appears to have reduced or removed the internal function that coordinated physical Xbox releases, but that is not the same as ending Xbox discs. Reports from January 2024, citing Windows Central editor Jez Corden, said Microsoft laid off or shut down the team handling physical-retail releases. Microsoft did not publicly confirm the precise team structure in the sources available. Current Xbox publishing documentation, certification requirements, and third-party releases show that boxed Xbox games remain possible—albeit more selective, outsourced, and region-dependent.
What was reportedly closed in 2024?
The January 2024 story concerned an internal Xbox function responsible for bringing games to physical retail: coordinating discs, packaging, retail distribution, manufacturing schedules, and physical SKU management. The report was attributed to reporting that cited Jez Corden; it was not accompanied by an official Microsoft announcement defining the team’s headcount or organizational chart. The original report therefore supports a qualified description: Microsoft reportedly cut an internal physical-release operation.
That function is different from the systems that certify Xbox games, approve SKUs, authorize manufacturing, operate the Xbox Store, or allow outside publishers to distribute boxed products. A company can remove an internal retail-distribution group while retaining approval processes and letting specialist publishers or distributors do the physical work.

- It does not establish that every employee involved in disc certification or product approval left Microsoft.
- It does not prove that all first-party Xbox games became digital-only overnight.
- It does not determine whether Microsoft still manages selected physical editions internally.
- It does not reveal the exact number of affected employees or the precise responsibilities transferred elsewhere.
How physical publishing can continue without that team
The practical change is best understood as a shift in who performs the work:

- Xbox or a game publisher plans the product and its physical SKU.
- Microsoft’s publishing systems handle platform requirements, certification, and approvals.
- An external publisher, distributor, or manufacturing partner produces discs and packaging.
- Retailers receive whatever quantity and regional editions that partner commits to.
Contemporary reporting described outsourcing as a possible outcome. Outsourcing can preserve a physical option without preserving Microsoft’s former internal cost base. It also makes availability more dependent on a publisher’s forecast, retailer commitments, territory, and edition strategy.
Microsoft’s current documentation still supports discs
Microsoft’s official publishing material, updated June 17, 2026, still describes physical Xbox products. Its SKU-planning guidance covers physical Xbox Series X|S SKUs, recommended retail prices, standard, special, and collector’s editions, and Smart Delivery configurations. That documentation is strong evidence that the physical-release pipeline remains an available option, not evidence that every game will use it.
Microsoft also continues to document disc approval and Release to Manufacturing (RTM) requirements at its RTM guidance. Physical projects must pass Xbox certification and obtain manufacturing approval. Packaging rules remain documented at the disc-packaging requirements page.

A post-report example
Physical Xbox releases continued after the 2024 report. Skybound Games and 11 bit studios announced an Xbox Series X|S physical edition of Frostpunk 2, demonstrating how a third-party publishing arrangement can keep discs in circulation: publisher announcement.
Why Microsoft would prioritize digital distribution
No available evidence proves one single cause for the staffing change. The economics and product strategy point to several reinforcing pressures.
Xbox has a digitally oriented audience
The Xbox Series S has no optical drive, so every Series S owner is already digital-only. That reduces the addressable audience for a boxed Xbox SKU and makes a publisher less willing to fund manufacturing, inventory, returns, and retailer margins.

Game Pass favors downloads and subscriptions
Game Pass supports day-one launches, downloads, and recurring access. Microsoft is also positioning Xbox as an ecosystem spanning consoles, Windows PCs, cloud gaming, smart TVs, and handheld PCs, rather than only a boxed-console business, as described in its 2026 developer materials. Game Pass is part of that strategy, but the evidence does not show that it alone caused the physical-team cuts.

A boxed release requires manufacturing, regional packaging, ratings and logistics work, retailer allocation, and management of unsold stock. Modern games may also need large downloads, launch patches, account checks, or online services. A disc can be a complete playable build, a partial installer, an older build requiring updates, or primarily an ownership key. The title-specific behavior matters more than the word “physical” on the box.
Sales are moving toward digital channels
Industry filings show the direction without proving a universal percentage. Take-Two said retailer orders for physical discs have been reduced and are expected to decline in its annual filing: SEC filing. Electronic Arts reported that 78% of units sold across Xbox One/Series and PlayStation 4/5 were digital in fiscal 2025, compared with 73% in 2024 and 68% in 2023: EA fiscal-year disclosure. Those figures are company-specific and should not be treated as an industry-wide Xbox rate.

What the change means for Xbox buyers
Series S owners
A physical Xbox game cannot be inserted into a Series S. You need a separately supported digital entitlement, so check the platform version before buying a disc from a retailer or second-hand seller.
Series X owners
Series X remains the relevant Xbox hardware for disc buyers. Microsoft’s documentation confirms that Series X|S physical SKUs can be planned and approved, but it does not guarantee a boxed edition for each first-party title. Check the specific game’s regional listing rather than assuming that a PlayStation disc means an Xbox disc exists.
Collectors and preservation-minded players
Physical editions can be resold, lent, collected, and sometimes played after storefront changes. They are not automatically permanent offline archives. Verify whether the disc contains a usable build, whether a download is mandatory, and whether online servers or account authentication are required. A July 2026 Xbox outage reportedly caused some physical-disc games to fail entitlement checks; Microsoft later said discs should not normally have been blocked and attributed the incident to saved-entitlement handling, with an update planned. The episode illustrates that physical media can reduce—but not eliminate—platform-service dependencies.

Used-game buyers
Inspect disc condition, missing download codes, region compatibility, and online-service requirements. A used box may contain a one-time code that has already been redeemed, or a disc that installs only part of the game.
Players choosing between platforms
Do not infer Xbox physical availability from a PlayStation or Nintendo edition. Publishers may print a boxed edition for one platform, region, or collector tier while offering another platform only digitally.

What “following the industry trend” really means
Digital distribution is dominant for many major publishers, but the transition is uneven by company, territory, platform, game type, and accounting method. Limited collector editions, niche releases, and third-party partnerships can still justify a disc even when a publisher reduces its standard retail footprint.
That is why “Xbox is going all-digital” is too broad. The defensible interpretation is narrower: Microsoft appears to be reducing the cost and staffing of internal physical distribution while treating digital, subscription, and multi-device delivery as the default growth model.
What remains unknown
- The exact size and responsibilities of the reported team.
- Which first-party physical editions, if any, Microsoft still manages directly.
- How consistently external publishers will supply Xbox discs across regions.
- Whether future first-party games will receive standard, limited, or collector-only Xbox editions.
- Whether Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox hardware will include an optical drive.
- Whether Xbox will introduce a disc-to-digital conversion system.
Microsoft’s discussion of next-generation Xbox hardware does not answer the disc-drive question; Project Helix communication should not be read as a final hardware specification.
How to decide what to buy now
- Want boxed games and used-market flexibility? Choose Series X and verify each title’s actual Xbox edition before ordering.
- Prioritize catalog size, day-one access, or PC and cloud play? Digital purchasing or Game Pass is the better structural fit, subject to account and service terms.
- Collect a specific release? Pre-order or buy when announced, because print runs and regional availability may be narrower than in previous generations.
- Care about offline preservation? Research the individual disc’s install contents, update requirement, authentication behavior, and server dependencies.
The Bottom Line
The reported 2024 cut affected Xbox’s internal physical-release operation, not the existence of Xbox discs. Microsoft still supports physical SKU planning, certification, manufacturing approval, and packaging, while third-party partners continue to publish boxed Xbox games. Expect fewer and more selective releases, greater regional variation, and heavier reliance on outside publishers—not an officially confirmed end to physical Xbox games.
