Microsoft is testing Highlight Reels, an AI-assisted gameplay-capture feature for the ROG Xbox Ally X. The March 2, 2026 rollout is an Xbox Insider preview, not a universal release, and initially supports only seven games. It is a useful convenience feature—but it is not proof that Microsoft has defeated SteamOS or turned the Ally X into an Xbox console.
What Highlight Reels actually does
Highlight Reels uses Gaming Copilot to capture gameplay in the background, identify moments Microsoft describes as notable, and assemble them into a short replay reel. After playing, users can find the result in Game Highlights (Preview) on the game’s page in the Xbox PC app and share it from there.
Microsoft says the feature does not require a separate capture application or download. However, the announcement does not specify guaranteed capture rates, clip length, editing tools, storage limits, processing location, voice-chat handling, or performance overhead. “AI-generated” should therefore be read as automated selection and assembly—not as a guarantee that every boss fight or victory will be recognized perfectly.
The feature is part of Microsoft’s broader effort to make Windows handhelds feel more console-like. It complements the Ally X’s Xbox full-screen interface and aggregated library, but it does not alter Windows’ underlying complexity or the device’s game-compatibility rules.

Availability: an Insider preview, not a finished feature
Microsoft announced Highlight Reels on March 2, 2026 for Xbox Insiders using the ROG Xbox Ally X. Preview software can change, break, or disappear, and access may depend on the device, Windows and Xbox app builds, account, region, and game.
The announcement did not provide a firm general-release date. The Xbox product page continues to identify Highlight Reels as a preview feature, so readers should check the current Xbox Insider experience before assuming it is available to everyone.
To participate, join the Xbox Insider program. Microsoft also asks testers to submit feedback through the Xbox Insider Hub.

The launch preview named these seven games:
- Among Us
- Elden Ring
- Fortnite
- Forza Horizon 5
- Lies of P
- Overwatch
- Palworld
This is a preview list, not a permanent compatibility guarantee. Microsoft expected the catalog to evolve, but the March announcement does not say that Highlight Reels works with every PC game. Check the current Insider build and Xbox app for the live list.
How to enable Highlight Reels
- Join Xbox Insider and install the applicable preview experience.
- Press the Command Center button on the ROG Xbox Ally X.
- Open Settings, then More Settings, then Widgets.
- Turn on Record in the background while playing a game.
- Launch one of the supported games and play normally.
- When finished, open that game’s page in the Xbox PC app.
- Look under Game Highlights (Preview) for the generated reel and share it from there.

- Gaming Copilot → Settings → Capture Settings → Navigate to Capture Settings in Widget
- Windows Settings → Gaming → Captures → Record what happened
If no reel appears
- Confirm background recording is enabled and the game is currently supported.
- Verify that the Insider preview and Xbox PC app are updated and active.
- Restart the Xbox PC app after the session.
- Check available storage; background video can consume space.
- Review Windows privacy, capture, and graphics settings.
- Keep the device online if app synchronization or cloud processing is required.
- Report the result through Xbox Insider Hub, especially when a supported session produces no reel.
Even with everything configured correctly, Microsoft does not promise that every session will produce a reel.

Steam’s system is not automatically superior for every user. Highlight Reels could save time for players who only want a short shareable moment. Steam Game Recording is the stronger choice for users who want to control recording duration, find a precise moment, trim footage, export files, or manage storage themselves. Steam also warns that CPU-based recording can noticeably affect performance on devices such as Steam Deck. Microsoft has published no equivalent Highlight Reels benchmark, so do not assume its capture is performance-neutral.
What the Ally X brings to the story
The ROG Xbox Ally X is a premium Windows 11 handheld, not a conventional Xbox console. Microsoft lists an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory, a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD, a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS display, an 80Wh battery, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, USB4 plus a second USB-C port, and a 715g weight.
Its Xbox software provides a full-screen interface and an aggregated library spanning Xbox and other PC storefronts. Access to Xbox games still depends on the available PC version, Xbox Play Anywhere, cloud gaming, remote play, or another supported route. Xbox branding does not mean every legacy, console-only Xbox title runs locally on the Ally X. Cloud access also varies by region, device, connection, subscription, and game rights.
Independent review coverage has praised the Ally X’s performance, battery capacity, speakers, and full-screen experience while pointing to its premium price, weight, Windows rough edges, and potentiometer-based sticks rather than Hall-effect sensors. Those factors matter far more to ownership than an early capture feature.

Is Highlight Reels a reason to buy the Ally X?
No—not by itself. Highlight Reels is a promising convenience feature for sharing quick clips, but it is limited to a preview, began with seven games, and has no published general-release timetable or capture-performance figures. It does not change the Ally X’s price, portability, battery behavior, Windows interface, storefront compatibility, or Xbox back-catalog limitations.
Buy the Ally X for the combination of high-end performance, 24GB memory, 1TB storage, an 80Wh battery, and access to multiple PC and Xbox pathways. Treat Highlight Reels as a bonus that may make the device feel more console-like if Microsoft expands support and adds clearer recording controls.
The fairest “SteamOS” conclusion is narrower than the headline: Microsoft is responding to a specific Steam capability—gameplay recording—not winning an operating-system war. Steam Deck has the more established and controllable recording workflow today, while the Ally X offers a more automated experiment whose value will depend on how quickly Microsoft expands it.
Bottom line
Highlight Reels is worth watching, especially for Ally X owners who want effortless social clips. In its March 2026 form, it remains an Xbox Insider preview with narrow game support and unanswered questions about editing, storage, reliability, and performance. Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X for its hardware and ecosystem flexibility, not because this one feature has made SteamOS obsolete.
