microsoft-windows-kernel-power-events.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file. If Windows says it is missing, unreadable, or cannot display a Kernel-Power event description, repair Windows components rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
File identity and expected versions
This is a message-resource DLL for the Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power Event Log provider. Event Viewer and Windows event-log APIs use it to turn event IDs into readable descriptions. It is not a normal application runtime library and is not part of Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game.
| Architecture | Recorded version | Recorded size |
|---|---|---|
| x86 | 6.2.9200.16420 | 103,936 bytes |
| x64 | 6.2.9200.16420 | 103,936 bytes |
| x86 or x64 later package revision | 6.2.9200.20521 | 103,936 bytes |
These records come from older Windows 8 servicing information. Do not use them as replacement specifications for current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations.
The expected location is:
C:WindowsSystem32microsoft-windows-kernel-power-events.dll
More generally, this is %SystemRoot%System32microsoft-windows-kernel-power-events.dll. Windows component servicing determines the correct architecture and location, so do not move a file manually to SysWOW64 or an application folder.

First, identify which error you have
There are two different problems commonly described with this filename.
A program says the DLL is missing
Possible Windows loader wording includes:
- “The program can’t start because microsoft-windows-kernel-power-events.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because microsoft-windows-kernel-power-events.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading microsoft-windows-kernel-power-events.dll.”
These messages do not prove that a particular game or application installed the file. The DLL belongs to Windows, and the affected program may simply be triggering a Windows component or event-log operation.
Event Viewer cannot find the event description
You may instead see wording like:
The description for Event ID '109' in Source
'Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power' cannot be found.
The local computer may not have the necessary registry information
or message DLL files to display the message.
That usually indicates a message-resource, provider-registration, or event-log reader problem. It can affect how an event is displayed without causing the shutdown or crash itself.
Kernel-Power Event ID 41 is separate. Microsoft describes Event ID 41 as evidence that Windows did not shut down cleanly. It does not prove that microsoft-windows-kernel-power-events.dll caused the restart.
Fix 1: Repair Windows automatically with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when the file is missing from System32, fails its signature check, or Event Viewer cannot resolve Kernel-Power messages.
Install pending updates first
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if no restart is immediately requested.
Then run the component repair sequence:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart the computer after SFC completes.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which gives SFC a trusted source for replacing damaged protected files. Microsoft documents this order in its System File Checker repair instructions.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupt files, restart and test Event Viewer or the affected program again. If it says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and repeat sfc /scannow.

When you want to check this individual file, an elevated Command Prompt can also run:
sfc /verifyfile=C:WindowsSystem32microsoft-windows-kernel-power-events.dll
Use the path belonging to your actual Windows installation. Microsoft documents the /VERIFYFILE and /SCANFILE switches in its SFC command reference.
Running these commands manually is straightforward, but repeated servicing repairs can become guesswork when you do not know which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying issues and its full version performs repairs, but it is optional and does not replace Windows servicing as the definitive fix.
If DISM says the source files cannot be found
Use a genuine Windows installation source that matches the installed edition, language, architecture, and build.
For example:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the matching Windows source. Do not use a random ISO or a source from a different Windows release. After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Fix 2: Check the file’s path and signature
Do not assume that a file is safe merely because its name is correct.
- Press Windows + E.
- Enter
%SystemRoot%System32in the address bar. - Locate
microsoft-windows-kernel-power-events.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
A correctly named file outside the Windows directory deserves extra caution. Do not replace the file yourself based only on its version or size. DISM and SFC are safer because they use Windows component metadata and servicing rules.
If the file is absent, first complete the DISM and SFC procedure. Do not copy a DLL from another computer unless you are performing advanced Windows servicing with a verified matching image.

Fix 3: Review Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a file after a false detection or during broader system cleanup.
- Open Start and select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries involving the file or Windows system components.
- Expand an entry to see whether it was quarantined or removed.
Only consider restoring a quarantined file after checking its Windows path, Microsoft signature, and system integrity. Prefer running DISM and SFC rather than restoring an isolated copy. Microsoft explains quarantine and restore actions in its guide to Protection History.
If the detection remains active, run a scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
If malware is found, follow Windows Security’s removal instructions before attempting further DLL repairs.
Fix 4: Repair Windows Update
A failed or incomplete update can leave protected components damaged or incompletely serviced. This is especially relevant on older Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 systems, where Microsoft update packages included this resource file.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Install all pending updates.
- Restart.
- Run DISM followed by SFC again.
Do not install an old Windows 8 update only because its file table lists this DLL. The package must match the operating system and installed servicing state. For difficult update failures, use Microsoft’s built-in Windows Update troubleshooting options and then repeat the repair sequence.

Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Storage controllers, and System devices.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click a suspect device and select Properties.

Driver hunting is often the slow part because Windows can have many device versions and optional updates. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its full version performs driver installation, but it is optional and cannot substitute for diagnosing power or hardware faults.
Microsoft’s Event ID 41 guidance explains why an unexpected restart needs separate investigation. Check recent driver changes, firmware updates, temperatures, power connections, and crash records rather than blaming the resource DLL.

Use System Restore when the error began after a recent update, driver installation, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Type
Create a restore point. - Open the matching result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Next, review the affected drives, and select Finish.
System Restore does not normally remove personal files, but it can undo drivers, updates, and installed programs. Back up important work first.
If DISM cannot repair the image and System Restore does not help, use Windows recovery options such as reinstalling Windows through Windows Update, Reset this PC, or installation media. Choose the least disruptive option that matches the condition of the installation. Microsoft lists these paths in its Windows recovery options.
Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 systems may require matching installation media or an OEM recovery source rather than the current Windows 10 and Windows 11 recovery pages.

What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
Third-party DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong language, or the wrong architecture. A copied file may also leave the component store and provider registration damaged, so the original error returns.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Microsoft installation media, or a trusted Windows recovery path instead.

Do not run regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. microsoft-windows-kernel-power-events.dll is an event-message resource DLL, not a normal self-registering application component.
Running a command such as this is not a repair:
regsvr32 microsoft-windows-kernel-power-events.dll
It will not restore a missing message resource, repair the component store, or correct a Kernel-Power event’s underlying cause.

Do not confuse the event description with the event
A missing description means the event reader could not resolve the provider’s message text. It does not automatically mean Windows suffered a power failure because of this DLL. If Event Viewer itself displays events correctly but a script does not, the reader or provider-registration path may be the issue. Use a current event API such as Get-WinEvent when reviewing logs programmatically.
FAQ
Is this a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a Windows message-resource DLL associated with the Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power Event Log provider.
Is it part of a third-party application?
No credible evidence identifies it as a Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, game, or separately downloadable runtime component. Repair Windows first rather than reinstalling unrelated packages.
Should it be in System32 or SysWOW64?
The documented provider path is %SystemRoot%System32. Do not choose a folder based only on whether a program is 32-bit or 64-bit. Windows component servicing and redirection determine the correct placement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does this DLL cause Event ID 41?
No conclusion like that should be drawn. Event ID 41 records an unclean shutdown. Investigate power, drivers, firmware, overheating, crashes, and hardware separately.
What if the error returns after SFC repairs it?
Review Windows Update and Defender Protection History, then inspect recent drivers and system changes. If DISM repeatedly reports repair failures, use a matching installation source or Windows recovery. Keep the CBS servicing results if you need to identify persistent component corruption.
