Microsoft’s binding 10-year agreement with Nintendo is a commitment to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms—not a promise to release every future Xbox game there. The deal was announced on February 21, 2023, while Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard acquisition was under regulatory review. Microsoft later completed that acquisition, and its official materials now list Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 for Nintendo Switch 2, with an announced release date of October 23, 2026.

What did Microsoft and Nintendo agree to?

On February 21, 2023, Microsoft president Brad Smith said the companies had signed a binding, 10-year agreement to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo players. Microsoft had discussed a Nintendo commitment in December 2022; the February announcement described it as a definitive legal agreement. Smith’s announcement transcript and Microsoft’s fact sheet describe the commitment as being about Call of Duty.

Microsoft said Nintendo players would receive the games alongside Xbox players, with same-day availability and feature and content parity. The full contract is not public, so those public descriptions do not establish every commercial clause or the agreement’s precise start and end dates.

Does the agreement cover every Xbox game?

No—not on the publicly documented terms. The Nintendo agreement is specifically framed around Call of Duty. Other Xbox-owned games could reach Nintendo through separate publishing decisions or broader platform strategy, but that does not make them part of this contract.

  • Covered publicly: Microsoft’s 10-year commitment to make Call of Duty available on Nintendo platforms.
  • Not established by this deal: a general obligation to port every Xbox Game Studios release, or every Activision Blizzard game.
  • Not promised: native Xbox Game Pass access on Nintendo consoles. Microsoft’s Xbox-side Game Pass and multiplayer conditions do not establish Nintendo service terms.

Why did Microsoft announce the deal?

Microsoft announced the agreement while seeking approval to acquire Activision Blizzard, whose portfolio includes Call of Duty. Regulators examined whether Microsoft might make important games exclusive or use control of the franchise to disadvantage rival platforms. The Nintendo commitment supported Microsoft’s argument that the acquisition would not simply withdraw Call of Duty from competitors; it was one part of the regulatory debate, not by itself a resolution of every concern.

The UK Competition and Markets Authority continued examining the transaction and required a restructured arrangement involving Ubisoft for cloud-streaming rights. Microsoft described that restructuring in its August 2023 explanation.

How did the acquisition affect the agreement?

Microsoft announced its plan to acquire Activision Blizzard on January 18, 2022. Activision Blizzard later referenced Microsoft’s 10-year Nintendo commitment in a December 8, 2022 update. The Nintendo agreement was announced publicly during the acquisition review; Microsoft’s earlier language described the commitment in the context of the merger. The available public descriptions do not establish what would have happened to the agreement if the acquisition had failed.

Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard King on October 13, 2023. Call of Duty then became part of Microsoft Gaming. The close and Microsoft’s wider platform messaging are covered in Xbox’s announcement welcoming Activision Blizzard King. That wider strategy is distinct from the terms publicly described for Nintendo.

Does feature and content parity mean identical performance?

No. Microsoft’s parity language concerns the promised availability and comparable game content; it does not establish that Nintendo hardware will render a game at the same resolution or frame rate as an Xbox or PlayStation, or deliver identical loading times, graphics settings, storage demands, or controls. A Nintendo edition may need platform-specific optimization or technical compromises. The performance of a particular port can only be assessed from details and testing for that release.

Which Nintendo console is the deal for?

The 2023 announcement referred broadly to Nintendo platforms, but that does not prove every future Call of Duty will run on the original Nintendo Switch. A 10-year commitment spans changing hardware, and each game still needs a supported platform announcement.

Nintendo Switch 2 launched in the United States on June 5, 2025. Nintendo announced a U.S. launch MSRP of $449.99 for the console; that historical launch price is not a statement of current pricing. Nintendo’s launch announcement gives the date and price.

What can Nintendo players expect in 2026?

Microsoft’s clearest current example is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Xbox Wire identified Nintendo Switch 2 as a platform for the game in its June 7, 2026 announcement, alongside Xbox, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, and Steam. Xbox’s product page lists October 23, 2026 as the release date, so that is a scheduled future date, not a completed launch.

This is confirmation for Switch 2, not evidence that the original Switch is supported. The announcements cited here do not establish a Nintendo-specific price, physical-edition details, storage requirement, or which modes and post-launch features will be available on Switch 2. Same-day availability was part of Microsoft’s public commitment, but a title’s specific launch timing and content should be checked in its release details.

What the deal does—and does not—tell you as a player

  • It establishes a long-term commitment to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms, with Switch 2 now named for an upcoming release.
  • It does not promise every Xbox first-party game, automatic Game Pass access, or support for every Nintendo model.
  • Content parity does not guarantee equivalent graphics, frame rate, or loading performance.
  • Cross-play, cross-progression, individual modes, seasonal updates, account requirements, and online conditions are separate, game-specific details; the agreement alone does not confirm them.
  • Before buying hardware or planning storage around a particular release, check that title’s Nintendo platform listing and published requirements. The public agreement does not establish the installation size or accessory needs of a Nintendo version.
