Microsoft’s 2015 Promise to Improve Xbox One Power Consumption

Microsoft’s April 2015 response to Xbox One energy criticism centered on incremental efficiency improvements and a clearer Instant-on versus Energy-saving choice—not a hardware fix.

In April 2015, Microsoft responded to criticism of the Xbox One’s energy use by saying it had already reduced the console’s Instant-on standby consumption by one-third since launch and would keep working on efficiency. It also planned to make the choice between Instant-on and Energy-saving more explicit during new-console setup. The response offered owners a clearer way to trade convenience for lower standby use; it was not a hardware recall or a promise of a specific future power target.

Why Xbox One’s power use drew criticism

The immediate backdrop was an NRDC report comparing the annual energy use of the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U. Rather than looking only at electricity during gameplay, the report estimated use across a year of gaming, video viewing and idle time. That distinction matters: a console can spend many hours connected in standby, so a relatively small draw repeated over long periods can add substantially to annual consumption.

Contemporary coverage of the report cited estimates of 233 kWh per year for Xbox One, 181 kWh for PS4 and 37 kWh for Wii U. Under the report’s assumed usage patterns, Xbox One’s estimate was about 30% higher than PS4’s and more than six times Wii U’s. The coverage also reported that nearly half of Xbox One’s annual energy use came from connected standby, with standby draw above 15 watts in the report’s test and usage assumptions. These are historical estimates, not readings that apply to every console or household. Thurrott’s April 2015 coverage summarized the comparison and the report’s assumptions.

Standby was a prominent concern, but it was not the only operating state involved. Gaming, streaming video and using Xbox One for TV/pass-through could each contribute to total consumption. The same coverage cited about 72 watts for TV-viewing use and said the console used substantially more energy for movie streaming than dedicated devices such as Apple TV or Chromecast. Those figures belong to the report’s particular comparison, not a universal measure of every model, app or viewing session.

What the two power modes did

Microsoft’s April 10, 2015 announcement described Instant-on and Energy-saving as a choice between connected-console features and lower standby consumption. Microsoft’s announcement explained the features and gave historical cost estimates.

Mode What it enabled Trade-off
Instant-on Kept the console network-connected while apparently off; supported background system, app and game updates, remote purchases initiated through SmartGlass or Xbox.com, faster wake-up and voice activation such as “Xbox on.” Used more standby power to keep those connected features available.
Energy-saving Used substantially less standby energy. Did not provide Instant-on’s background updating and automatic download behavior; owners could have to wait for pending updates after starting the console.

For someone who played often and valued unattended updates, remote purchases or quick wake-up, Instant-on prioritized convenience. Energy-saving better suited a console used occasionally, left idle for long stretches, or kept in a household where standby consumption mattered more than having updates ready at startup. The lower-power choice did not remove the need for updates; it shifted when owners dealt with them.

What Microsoft promised—and what it did not

Microsoft said Xbox One had been designed to improve both update behavior and power consumption, and that Instant-on consumption had already fallen by one-third since launch. It characterized the console’s launch power use as about the same as Xbox 360 despite Xbox One being more powerful, and said it would continue efficiency work over time, as it had with successive Xbox 360 revisions. The one-third figure and launch comparison were Microsoft’s claims; the announcement did not provide a new wattage figure or independent test method.

The concrete user-facing change was to prompt new Xbox One owners during initial setup to choose between Instant-on and Energy-saving. Existing owners could change the setting through the Xbox One interface of the period: Settings → Power & startup. These labels and that path describe the 2015 Xbox One software experience, not a guaranteed menu location for every console or software version today.

Microsoft’s announcement did not specify a future reduction target, promise to eliminate connected-standby draw, announce a hardware retrofit or replacement, commit to matching PS4 or Wii U consumption, or say Energy-saving would keep background updates. Nor did it publicly address every measure mentioned in the contemporary account of NRDC’s recommendations. That account cited passive HDMI pass-through, lower TV-mode power use, USB controller charging during Instant-on and reducing the energy cost of Kinect-based voice control. The announcement’s emphasis was on reported incremental efficiency work and giving owners a visible mode choice.

How to read the 2015 cost estimates

Microsoft estimated annual energy costs for the two modes in the United States and European Union. These were its 2015 estimates, with actual costs dependent on electricity rates and use—not current bills or forecasts for 2026.

Region Instant-on estimate Energy-saving estimate
United States Approximately $6.50–$15.50 per year Approximately $0.26–$0.62 per year
European Union Approximately €7.25–€27.50 per year Approximately €0.29–€1.10 per year

The spread reflects the fact that annual cost depends on more than the mode label: electricity rates, time spent idle, gameplay and video use, and the console’s role as a TV hub all affect the result. The NRDC annual kWh estimates and Microsoft’s cost ranges should not be treated as directly interchangeable, since they came from different assumptions and purposes.

What an owner could do

For the Xbox One interface described in 2015, owners could select the lower-power option through Settings → Power & startup, then choose Energy-saving instead of Instant-on. The exact labels and location are historical; menus may differ across later Xbox One software and other Xbox generations.

  • Choose Instant-on if background updates, remote downloads, voice activation or faster startup are worth the added standby use to your household.
  • Choose Energy-saving if reducing idle consumption matters more and you are willing to handle updates after startup.
  • Do not assume a console that appears off is drawing no power when it is in Instant-on.
  • Do not use the 2015 cost ranges as a current estimate. A present-day calculation needs your electricity rate and the console’s actual usage pattern.

Annual comparisons are most useful when they account for all the ways a household uses a console—gaming, streaming, TV functions and standby time—not just one standby-watt reading. A console used mainly for games may have a different profile from one left connected as a household media hub.
