If Windows 10 gameplay stutters while recording, start by updating the graphics driver and turning off background recording. That keeps manual Game Bar recording available while removing the always-on capture buffer. Disable Game Bar recording entirely only if the problem persists or you do not need captures.
That advice reflects Microsoft guidance reported on October 19, 2016, when the feature was commonly called Game DVR. Windows settings and labels have changed since then, so the steps below use the later Xbox Game Bar and Captures terminology where possible.
What Microsoft said about Game DVR in 2016
Windows 10’s Game DVR was the built-in gameplay capture feature, integrated with the Xbox app and Game Bar. It could take screenshots, record on demand, or keep a rolling background buffer so a player could save a recent moment after it happened.

In a report published October 19, 2016, Thurrott attributed Microsoft’s guidance to Larry Hyrb. The report said background recording was off by default because of its performance implications on PCs other than the highest-end systems. It also described early full-screen-game support after the Windows 10 Anniversary Update as limited to six games. Background recording
A rolling buffer captures continuously while you play, even before you press a save shortcut. That makes it convenient for unexpected highlights, but capture and encoding work can compete with the game for system resources. If you want fewer capture-related interruptions without giving up all recording, this is the first setting to turn off.
Full-screen capture
Full-screen capture was another concern in the early Windows 10 implementation. Compatibility and behavior have changed across Windows and Game Bar releases, and across individual games. Do not treat the 2016 limitation as a rule for current systems. If recording causes flicker or produces a black video, compare full-screen with borderless-windowed or windowed mode; neither display mode is universally faster or more reliable.

Why the impact varies
There is no fixed FPS penalty that applies to every PC. The result depends on the game and its resolution and settings, available CPU and GPU headroom, whether hardware encoding is available, capture quality and frame rate, storage, laptop power or thermal limits, and other overlays or recording software running at the same time.
Try the least disruptive fixes first
- Update the graphics driver. Use the driver update appropriate for your GPU, then restart the game and compare. Thurrott reported that Microsoft’s testing found graphics-driver updates resolved performance issues in nearly all tested scenarios, without requiring Game DVR to be disabled or the Xbox app removed. - Turn off background recording. Open Settings > Gaming > Captures and switch off the control for recording in the background or saving what happened. The wording and placement vary by Windows 10 build. Leave Game Bar available if you still want to start clips manually.
- Retest the same game section. Use the comparison procedure below rather than assuming a change helped.
- If the problem remains, disable Game Bar recording. Open Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar and turn off the Game Bar option if your build offers it. Settings differ by release; some builds separate opening the overlay from capture controls under Captures.
- Check other causes. If the comparison shows no meaningful improvement, look at graphics settings, CPU or GPU saturation, temperatures, RAM pressure, storage space or speed, outdated chipset drivers, and competing overlays or streaming tools.
Microsoft’s later support material groups the relevant controls under Windows Gaming settings, but Windows 10 builds do not all present identical labels. Choose the recording setup that matches your needs

Record, take screenshots, and find the files
Microsoft’s current Xbox Game Bar support documentation covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. It lists these shortcuts; availability can depend on the Windows build, Game Bar version, and app or game:
- Win + G: Open Xbox Game Bar.
- Win + Alt + R: Start or stop recording.
- Win + Alt + M: Turn microphone capture on or off during a recording.
- Win + Alt + Print Screen: Take a screenshot.

Compare performance with a controlled test
- Choose a repeatable game section: the same benchmark, mission, save point, or route.
- Play it with background recording enabled. Note FPS if available, frame-time consistency, stutter, input response, and fan or temperature behavior.
- Turn background recording off in Settings > Gaming > Captures, then restart the game.
- Repeat the same section with the same graphics settings and note the same observations.
- If you still see trouble, compare once more with Game Bar recording disabled. Close competing overlays one at a time during testing so you can identify which change matters.
This comparison can show whether capture is contributing on your system; it cannot promise a particular FPS gain. If nothing changes, investigate the game, drivers, thermals, storage, and other background software instead of assuming Game DVR is the cause.
Troubleshoot recording problems

When to turn Game Bar recording off completely
Disable Game Bar recording if you never use built-in captures, if background recording and a driver update have not resolved capture-related stutter, or if you want to remove this overlay from a competitive session. On a battery-powered or thermally constrained laptop, disabling the rolling buffer is a sensible first step; use manual capture only if it remains stable. You can also close other overlays while diagnosing problems, including GPU-vendor tools, Discord, Steam, streaming software, and performance-monitoring widgets.
Avoid starting with registry edits. Registry values circulate in community answers, but they are not equivalent to a standard Microsoft settings procedure and may behave differently across builds.
