Microsoft did briefly move ahead of Sony in a gaming-revenue ranking, but the headline needs a precise qualifier. Newzoo’s first-half 2023 pro forma calculation combined Microsoft’s gaming business with Activision Blizzard and estimated about $10.4 billion in revenue—enough to place Microsoft second among public game companies, behind Tencent and ahead of Sony. That was an analytical reconstruction after Microsoft completed the Activision Blizzard acquisition in October 2023, not a separately reported Microsoft segment ranking and not evidence that Xbox consoles had overtaken PlayStation.

Newzoo’s latest ranking page surfaced for this analysis, labeled YTD Q4 2025, lists Tencent first and Sony second. Microsoft’s exact position is not disclosed in the available ranking excerpt, so the 2023 result should be treated as historical and methodology-specific rather than a current, permanent takeover.

What Microsoft actually overtook

The claim concerns public gaming companies ranked by revenue. It does not mean that Xbox hardware outsold PlayStation, that Microsoft had a larger console installed base, or that its games operation was more profitable.

  • It was not a comparison of Xbox console revenue against PlayStation console revenue.
  • It was not a ranking by console shipments, users, engagement, game quality or market share.
  • It included Microsoft’s broader gaming portfolio and Activision Blizzard’s publishing, mobile, PC, console, subscription and in-game revenue.

The most accurate wording is: Newzoo’s pro forma calculation placed Microsoft’s combined gaming business and Activision Blizzard ahead of Sony by gaming revenue in the first half of 2023.

The original Newzoo calculation

In its first-half 2023 analysis, Newzoo estimated that the 10 largest public game companies generated about $54.4 billion in revenue. Activision Blizzard contributed approximately $4.4 billion, with Newzoo reporting 35.5% year-over-year growth for the company. Adding that figure to Microsoft’s gaming revenue produced an estimated $10.4 billion.

Measure Figure How to interpret it
Top 10 public game companies, H1 2023 Approximately $54.4 billion Newzoo industry comparison
Activision Blizzard, H1 2023 Approximately $4.4 billion Newzoo estimate used in the comparison
Microsoft plus Activision Blizzard, H1 2023 Approximately $10.4 billion Pro forma combination, not a standalone Microsoft reported line item
Ranking outcome Microsoft second Tencent first; Sony moved to third in this specific comparison

Newzoo described the result as the first time Sony had fallen from second to third in its tracking. The wording “would make Microsoft” matters: the calculation reconstructed what the combined businesses represented rather than relying on a full period of Microsoft’s consolidated reporting after the deal.

Newzoo’s H1 2023 breakdown and its 2023 year-in-numbers analysis provide the underlying ranking and methodology.

Why Activision Blizzard changed Microsoft’s scale

Microsoft completed its Activision Blizzard acquisition in October 2023. The purchase added businesses that reach well beyond the Xbox console:

  • Call of Duty across console, PC and mobile;
  • King, whose Candy Crush portfolio supplies substantial mobile revenue;
  • Blizzard franchises such as World of Warcraft, Diablo and Overwatch;
  • PC and console publishing, downloadable content and in-game purchases;
  • Advertising, subscriptions and other live-service monetization.

That portfolio made Microsoft a much larger publisher and platform owner overnight in economic terms. It also blurred the old manufacturer-versus-manufacturer comparison: Microsoft-owned games can earn money on PlayStation, while Microsoft competes with Sony through Xbox hardware, Windows, subscriptions and cloud distribution.

What Microsoft reported after the acquisition

Microsoft’s fiscal 2025 disclosures show continued growth in the parts of gaming that do not depend on selling consoles. In its FY2025 earnings release, Microsoft said:

  • Gaming revenue increased by $2.0 billion, or 9%, year over year.
  • Xbox content and services revenue increased 16%.
  • Microsoft attributed growth to Activision Blizzard and Xbox Game Pass.
  • Xbox hardware revenue declined 25%.

Microsoft defines Xbox content and services to include first- and third-party games, in-game content, Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Cloud Gaming, advertising, third-party disc royalties and other cloud services. The full definition appears in Microsoft’s FY2025 metrics.

This split is the clearest reason the revenue story cannot be translated into “Xbox beat PlayStation.” Microsoft’s gaming revenue grew while its hardware revenue fell. The company was monetizing software, services, mobile and other distribution channels more effectively than a hardware-only reading would suggest.

Why Microsoft and Sony figures are difficult to compare

Different reporting calendars

Microsoft’s fiscal year ends June 30. Sony’s fiscal year ends March 31. Comparing one company’s fiscal-year result with the other’s without calendarizing the periods can make growth and ranking differences appear larger or smaller than they really are.

Different segment definitions

Microsoft reports gaming inside its More Personal Computing segment rather than as a fully independent operating segment. Sony reports a dedicated Game & Network Services segment covering PlayStation hardware and its related software, network and service activity. Sony’s investor materials are available through its financial-results library.

Reported, estimated and pro forma numbers

A company’s reported segment revenue is not interchangeable with Newzoo’s estimate. Newzoo restates figures to calendar periods and applies its own treatment to businesses and platforms. The $10.4 billion Microsoft figure was pro forma; it was not an audited, separately disclosed Microsoft gaming total for H1 2023.

Hardware and currency treatment

Newzoo’s ranking methodology notes that its estimates for Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo can represent platform revenue excluding hardware, while company-reported gaming figures may include hardware. Sony reports in yen and Microsoft in U.S. dollars; Newzoo says it generally converts non-dollar figures using year-end exchange rates. These choices can materially affect a close ranking. What the latest ranking says

The latest Newzoo ranking surfaced here is labeled YTD Q4 2025. It lists:

  1. Tencent — approximately $40.227 billion
  2. Sony — approximately $22.109 billion

The available result does not show Microsoft’s exact value or rank. It is therefore not supportable to say that Microsoft remains ahead of Sony today based only on the 2023 calculation. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Microsoft passed Sony in Newzoo’s H1 2023 pro forma comparison, while the latest surfaced table places Sony second again.

Why revenue rank is not a console verdict

Microsoft’s gaming footprint includes Xbox consoles, Windows games, Game Pass, cloud gaming, advertising, mobile games through King, Activision Blizzard publishing and sales on competing platforms. Sony’s gaming business includes PlayStation hardware, digital games, add-on content, PlayStation Network, subscriptions, accessories and first-party publishing.

Consequently, a larger gaming-revenue footprint can coexist with fewer consoles sold or weaker hardware momentum. Revenue also says nothing by itself about operating profit: acquisitions bring development, marketing, integration and amortization costs that are not visible in a simple top-line ranking.

What the shift means for the industry

Consolidation changes the leaderboard

The Activision Blizzard deal demonstrates how an acquisition can reorder public-company rankings without a sudden change in consumer hardware demand. Corporate ownership, rather than console branding alone, increasingly determines scale.

Mobile is central to gaming economics

King’s mobile operations and the advertising and in-game spending attached to mobile games helped broaden Microsoft’s revenue base. A console-only comparison would miss a major part of the business Microsoft acquired.

Distribution is becoming cross-platform

Microsoft can earn publishing revenue from games sold on PlayStation, while Sony collects platform fees when transactions occur through its store. The competitive question is therefore about ownership, publishing economics and platform fees as well as hardware.

Subscriptions and recurring services matter

Microsoft cited Xbox Game Pass as a contributor to FY2025 content-and-services growth. That does not establish a standalone Game Pass revenue figure, but it shows why recurring services and digital engagement matter as much as one-time console sales.
