Yes—Microsoft’s Xbox handheld interface was reportedly usable on more than the ROG Xbox Ally. The September 18, 2025 discovery was not a downloadable “Xbox Mode” app or a confirmed universal hardware feature. It exposed Windows 11’s Full screen experience settings in an Insider build, where an original ASUS ROG Ally Z1 Extreme could select Xbox as its home app. The workaround suggested broader compatibility, but it was experimental, version-dependent and not proof that every Windows handheld was officially supported.
What actually leaked
HotHardware reported that a Windows 11 Insider build exposed Microsoft’s Full screen experience on a non-Xbox-branded handheld. In the September 18, 2025 report, the setting appeared under Settings → Gaming → Full screen experience. Its Choose home app menu included Xbox, and a startup option could send the device directly into that interface.
“Xbox Mode” was headline shorthand. The discovery concerned a Windows shell designed for controller-first navigation, not a separate operating system or replacement for Windows. The ROG Xbox Ally was the intended reference device, but the setting reportedly worked on an original ROG Ally Z1 Extreme.
Why the discovery mattered
Windows handhelds normally expose users to a desktop, touch-oriented menus, multiple launchers and manufacturer control panels. A full-screen Xbox shell could make the device feel more console-like by providing:

- Less need to reach for a touchpad, keyboard or mouse for routine tasks.
That does not establish that Xbox replaces Armoury Crate SE, Lenovo Legion Space, MSI Center M, Windows Explorer or every third-party launcher. Power limits, fan curves, firmware, display settings and some game installations may still depend on OEM software or the desktop.
How the reported Insider workaround worked
At the time, the report tied the feature to Windows 11 25H2 through the Windows Insider Program. The exact labels can change between builds, and Microsoft may enable the feature gradually or remove the toggle.
- Install the Windows Insider build containing Windows 11 25H2.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Gaming, then Full screen experience.
- Under Configuration, open Choose home app.
- Select Xbox.
- Turn on Enter full screen experience on start up.
- Restart the handheld.
If the menu is absent, check the Windows build, Xbox app and device updates first. A missing toggle may indicate staged rollout, a changed menu, an ineligible configuration or an altered Insider build—not automatically incompatible hardware. Avoid unofficial unlockers or modified system files.

Demonstrated hardware versus assumed compatibility

The safe conclusion is that the interface was not technically locked to the ROG Xbox Ally in that build. “Works on all gaming handhelds” was a claim associated with the report, not a complete compatibility certification.

Performance: interesting observations, not a benchmark
HotHardware attributed early results to Reddit user “Gogsi123”: roughly a 2 frames-per-second average increase in Red Dead Redemption 2, about 1 GB less RAM used by Celeste, and noticeably more fan activity. These are single-user observations, not controlled tests.
Power mode, resolution, refresh rate, drivers, game patches, thermal state, background processes and overlay behavior can all change those numbers. Treat the reports as clues about overhead, not evidence that Xbox full-screen mode universally improves frame rates or memory use. Increased fan activity may also offset a small reduction in background work.
What you gain—and what remains Windows
Benefits
- More comfortable navigation with built-in controls.
- Faster access to Xbox PC content and installed games.
- A console-style startup path.
- A potentially simpler first experience for nontechnical users.
Limitations
- Steam, Epic, Ubisoft Connect, EA, Battle.net and other libraries may still require their own launchers.
- Game visibility can differ between locally installed files, Xbox app titles, Game Pass games, shortcuts and third-party storefronts.
- OEM utilities may remain necessary for TDP, fan, RGB, controller, display and firmware controls.
- Windows desktop components and manual troubleshooting do not disappear.
- Insider software can introduce driver, stability and compatibility regressions.
Common problems and sensible recovery
The Full screen experience page is missing
Verify the Windows build and Insider channel, install Windows and Xbox app updates, then restart. Microsoft may have changed the menu, staged the rollout or stopped exposing it to a particular device.
Xbox does not appear at startup
Confirm that Enter full screen experience on start up is enabled and restart again. An OEM shell or incomplete implementation may still take control.

Games are missing
Check whether the title is installed locally, belongs to Xbox or PC Game Pass, or depends on Steam or another launcher. An aggregated view is not guaranteed to reproduce every storefront’s library and shortcuts.
Performance or noise gets worse
Compare the same TDP, resolution, refresh rate, Windows power mode, driver and game settings. The reported two-frame difference is too small and too anecdotal to justify changing hardware or aggressive power settings. If fans become louder, monitor temperatures with the manufacturer’s controls and do not disable thermal protections.

A HotHardware archive entry dated November 21, 2025 lists a later report titled “Microsoft Rolls Out Xbox Full Screen Experience To All Windows 11 Handhelds.” That points to a move from Insider discovery toward broader availability. The archive listing alone does not establish the final Windows version, regional rollout, hardware requirements or Microsoft’s definitive support policy, so it should not be read as a universal compatibility guarantee.

Should you change hardware for this feature?
No. The discovery demonstrated software access, not a hardware-exclusive performance advantage. Existing Windows handheld owners should try the feature only when it is offered by their normal Windows build and should keep OEM utilities available. Buyers seeking the closest Microsoft integration can compare the ROG Xbox Ally family at ASUS; readers who value a larger display and detachable controllers can review the Lenovo Legion Go; MSI’s Windows handheld range is listed at MSI. Steam-focused buyers should compare the Steam Deck instead.
The practical verdict is straightforward: Microsoft’s handheld shell escaped its original ROG Xbox Ally positioning in an Insider build, and later reporting suggested a wider rollout. The 2025 discovery was real and useful, but it was a configurable, version-sensitive Windows feature—not proof that every handheld had finished, officially supported “Xbox Mode.”
