Yes—the leak was real, but it is no longer the current way to get Microsoft’s handheld interface. In September 2025, testers enabled the Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE) on Windows 11 handhelds that were not ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally. Microsoft later released the feature officially to compatible Windows 11 handhelds, renamed it Xbox mode, and began extending it to laptops and desktops in selected markets in 2026.
That means owners of a compatible Windows handheld should use Microsoft’s supported settings path rather than the old ViVeTool and registry workaround. Xbox mode is a controller-focused Windows interface—not a new Xbox operating system, console emulator, or guaranteed performance upgrade.
What actually leaked in September 2025?
The leaked feature was initially called the Xbox Full Screen Experience. Contemporary reports showed that an early Windows 11 build could expose it on handheld PCs beyond the ROG Xbox Ally by combining a Windows 11 25H2 or preview build with updated Xbox and Game Bar components, ViVeTool feature activation, and a registry value identifying the device as a handheld.
That build was unfinished and unofficial. It could stop working after an update, and the precise commands depended on the Windows build. The leak mattered because it suggested that the interface was a Windows feature being staged for broader hardware support, rather than functionality permanently locked to one ASUS product. What Microsoft released afterward
Official handheld availability
In November 2025, Microsoft announced the Full Screen Experience for Windows 11 handhelds through the Windows Insider rollout, followed by availability on handhelds already on the market. The announcement is documented in Xbox Wire and the Windows Insider Blog.
The name became Xbox mode
As Microsoft expanded the experience beyond handhelds, it adopted the shorter name Xbox mode. On April 30, 2026, Microsoft announced a rollout to Windows 11 PCs, beginning in selected markets. The Xbox Wire announcement describes a controller-first way to browse a library, launch games, use Game Bar, and switch between applications. The Windows Experience Blog provides additional rollout context: Windows 11 PC gamers: Xbox mode rolls out.
Which devices can use Xbox mode?
| Device category | What is established | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X | Reference devices designed around the experience | They remain the most integrated Xbox-branded option, but are not the only supported hardware. |
| Other Windows 11 handhelds | Microsoft made the feature available beyond the Ally family | Availability depends on Windows build, Xbox and Game Bar versions, region, and device configuration. |
| Examples including ROG Ally/Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go and MSI Claw | Potentially compatible Windows handhelds | Do not assume identical behavior or automatic availability on every model. |
| Windows 11 laptops and desktops | Microsoft documents Xbox mode for other PC form factors, with rollout beginning in selected markets in 2026 | Check regional and account rollout status. |
| Steam Deck running SteamOS or another Linux handheld | Not a native target for this Windows feature | Installing Windows creates a separate configuration with its own driver, battery, and controller trade-offs. |
The safe rule is compatible Windows 11 handheld, not “any handheld.” Microsoft has not established that every Windows installation on every handheld behaves identically.

If Xbox mode is missing
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Update the Xbox app and Game Bar through Microsoft Store.
- Confirm that the device is on a supported Windows 11 build.
- Check regional or rollout-channel availability.
- Restart the handheld and check again.
- Use registry edits only for deliberate preview experimentation, with a recovery plan; they are not Microsoft’s normal installation method now.
A missing toggle does not by itself prove that the hardware is incompatible.
What Xbox mode changes
Xbox mode replaces much of the small-screen desktop friction with a full-screen, gamepad-friendly shell. Its practical functions include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Browsing a consolidated game library.
- Launching games and opening the Xbox app.
- Using Game Bar.
- Switching between apps without returning immediately to the traditional desktop.
- Entering the gaming interface automatically at sign-in on supported handhelds.
Microsoft says startup Xbox mode can limit background processes while gaming. That is an operating-mode optimization, not a published universal frame-rate or battery-life guarantee.
Does it increase FPS or battery life?
There is no single percentage improvement that applies to every handheld. Results depend on the APU, memory, drivers, OEM utilities, startup programs, game engine, resolution, power profile, and whether a title is CPU- or GPU-limited. Microsoft describes reduced background activity and a more efficient gaming path, but does not promise a fixed gain.
Independent testing of Xbox mode on an older ROG Ally found a more handheld-friendly Windows experience without turning performance into a universal transformation: Windows Central’s testing. Treat any claim that Xbox mode gives every device a major FPS or battery boost as unsupported unless it includes measurements for your exact hardware, game, settings, and power mode.
What it does not replace
Windows itself
Xbox mode is an interface layer. It does not convert a Windows handheld into an Xbox console, add Xbox-console backward compatibility, or replace the Windows desktop.

Steam, Epic, Battle.net, and other launchers
Windows handhelds can still use multiple PC storefronts. Microsoft and ASUS specifically describe the ROG Xbox Ally family as able to access Xbox, Battle.net, Steam, and other PC games: Xbox Wire’s hardware announcement. Xbox mode can offer a unified entry point, but some launchers still require a desktop, touchscreen, or keyboard. Anti-cheat systems, launcher windows, login prompts, and unusual full-screen behavior can remain troublesome.
OEM control software
Armoury Crate, Lenovo Legion Space, MSI Center, and comparable tools may still be needed for wattage limits, fan curves, button mapping, firmware, and device-specific updates. Xbox mode does not make those utilities redundant.
Compatibility labels and game behavior
Microsoft’s Handheld Compatibility Program evaluates controller input, icon and button-label accuracy, text entry, display resolution, legibility, full-screen behavior, and performance fit for a device class. Games may receive a Handheld Optimized label. Details are available from the developer program overview and Xbox compatibility page.
That label is not a promise of identical frame rates on every handheld. It indicates expected usability and a suitable performance target; you may still need to change resolution, graphics presets, text size, or controller settings. Games from Steam and other stores may not carry the same Xbox metadata.

When Xbox mode is a good fit
- You mostly play with a controller and dislike navigating a Windows desktop on a small screen.
- You want one gaming-focused front end for several PC libraries.
- You want a handheld to enter a game-first interface at sign-in.
- You are comfortable returning to desktop mode when a launcher, mod, or utility requires it.
When to leave it off
- You frequently edit files, install mods, manage configurations, or use desktop applications.
- Your games depend on keyboard-heavy launchers or unusual window behavior.
- Your OEM software is central to power, fan, or control tuning.
- You are expecting a universal FPS, loading-time, or battery revolution.
- You specifically want SteamOS-style simplicity; Xbox mode still sits on Windows and inherits Windows troubleshooting.
Useful edge cases
Docked play
Xbox mode can be used while a Windows handheld is docked. Its navigation remains controller-oriented, so desktop mode may be more convenient for productivity or file management.
Returning to the desktop
Use Game Bar, Task View, or the Windows key to leave the full-screen interface. On some handheld configurations, returning to the desktop can end the background-process behavior associated with startup Xbox mode; Microsoft’s support guidance indicates that a restart may be needed to restore those startup optimizations. ASUS also documents desktop access on ROG Xbox Ally devices: ASUS’s guide.

Apps that do not support the experience
Microsoft warns that unsupported apps may appear against a black background in the full-screen environment. Switch to the desktop for those programs rather than treating the display issue as a game failure.
Should you buy an Xbox Ally for Xbox mode?
Not solely for the software. The ROG Xbox Ally models are the reference hardware and offer the most direct integration, but Microsoft expanded Xbox mode to compatible Windows handhelds. If you already own an ROG Ally, Legion Go, MSI Claw, or another supported Windows 11 handheld, check for the feature before replacing it.
When comparing hardware, prioritize the APU, RAM, screen, battery, weight, ergonomics, cooling noise, OEM software, warranty, expandable storage, and USB-C docking—not the presence of a mode that may now be available across the category. Microsoft’s compatibility program is useful context, but it does not replace device-specific reviews and benchmarks.
Bottom line
The 2025 leak was an early, unofficial glimpse of Microsoft’s Xbox Full Screen Experience on non-Ally Windows handhelds. Microsoft subsequently made the feature official on compatible Windows 11 handhelds, renamed it Xbox mode, and began extending it to PCs. Today, the important question is whether your Windows build, region, and device have the supported feature—not whether you should repeat the old registry hack. Expect a smoother controller-first shell and potentially less background activity, but keep your OEM utilities and desktop workflow available, and do not expect guaranteed FPS or battery gains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Steam Deck run Xbox mode?
Not natively on SteamOS. Xbox mode is a Windows feature; installing Windows on a Steam Deck is a separate configuration and does not establish universal support.
Does Xbox mode install Xbox-console games on a PC handheld?
No. It is a Windows interface for browsing and launching PC games and using Game Bar; it does not turn the device into an Xbox console.
Do I still need the ViVeTool and registry method?
No for normal current use. Update Windows, Xbox, and Game Bar, then use Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode. The old method was for an unofficial 2025 preview.
