Microsoft announced its Xbox November 2023 update on November 29, 2023. For Windows users, the headline change was the general release of Compact mode in the Xbox app, joined by a Gaming Services Repair Tool, unread-only notification viewing, and improved controller navigation. The same announcement also covered separate Xbox console features, so not every item applies to a PC or handheld.
What Microsoft announced
The November 2023 release was a monthly platform update spanning three areas:
- Xbox app on Windows: Compact mode, notification filtering, a Gaming Services Repair Tool, and controller-navigation improvements.
- Xbox consoles: Japanese keyboard layouts, Free Play Days wishlist alerts, and phone authentication for Microsoft Rewards redemption.
- Controller firmware: A separate update that Microsoft later clarified was not part of the November Xbox Update.
Microsoft’s original announcement is archived at Xbox Wire. Because later Xbox releases changed the Windows and handheld experience, this article describes the November 2023 announcement rather than the current Xbox app.

Compact mode: the main PC change
Compact mode became available to everyone in the latest Xbox app update on Windows devices. It reduces the persistent sidebar to icons, giving the game catalogue and other content more usable space on a small display. Microsoft highlighted Windows gaming handhelds such as the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go, and said it was working with ASUS and other manufacturers to enable the layout by default on handhelds.

How to turn on Compact mode
- Open the Xbox app on your Windows PC or handheld.
- Select the profile icon in the top-left corner.
- Turn on the Compact mode toggle.
The announcement did not specify a minimum Windows build, display resolution, or exhaustive list of supported handhelds. Menu wording can also differ in later app versions.
Who benefits most?
- Handheld owners and people using small laptop or tablet screens.
- Controller-first players who want more room for cover art and game lists.
- Users who find the full text sidebar too dominant.
Compact mode is a layout change, not a performance setting. It does not promise higher frame rates, longer battery life, smaller downloads, lower latency, or broader game compatibility. On a large monitor, users who depend on persistent text labels may prefer the standard layout.
Gaming Services Repair Tool
Microsoft added a dedicated troubleshooting entry for problems involving Gaming Services or missing content when launching the Xbox app on PC. It is intended as a first step for cases where the app opens but expected games or entitlements are not visible, or where Gaming Services appears unable to launch a game.

How to open it
- Open the Xbox app.
- Select the profile icon in the top-left.
- Select Support.
- Open Gaming Services Repair Tool.
The announcement does not list every repair action or guarantee that the tool fixes installation failures. It is not a replacement for Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, Xbox app, or Windows troubleshooting.
When it may not help
- Xbox account, subscription, or entitlement problems.
- Xbox service outages or network failures.
- Storage, hardware, permissions, or antivirus conflicts.
- Windows corruption outside Gaming Services.
- Game-specific bugs or damaged game files.
- Digital-rights-management issues or unsupported operating-system configurations.
If the tool cannot resolve the problem, use the standard Xbox app, Gaming Services, Microsoft Store, and Windows update support procedures, or consult Xbox Support.
Notifications and controller navigation in the Windows app
Unread-only notifications
The notification dropdown gained an option to show only unread notifications. This is useful if Game Pass, game, or benefits alerts have accumulated faster than you can review them. Microsoft did not say that users could independently filter every category, set notification priority, or remove promotional banners throughout the app.
Improved controller navigation
Microsoft also described improved controller navigation across the Xbox app. This is an interface usability change, not a new controller model or a promise that every screen became fully operable without a mouse and keyboard. The announcement did not identify a specific controller as a requirement.

Console-only additions
Japanese physical and virtual keyboard layouts
On Xbox consoles, users could select specific Japanese keyboard layouts, including Japanese 106/109 and English 101/102. The November 2023 path was:

- Go to Settings > System > Language & location.
- Select the required keyboard layout, with the keyboard-and-dictation language set to Japanese.
Availability depends on the console’s language settings and connected input device. This setting is not part of the Windows Xbox app.
Wishlist alerts for Free Play Days
Xbox consoles could notify users when a game already on their wishlist became available through Xbox Free Play Days. A game can be added from its store detail page by pressing the Xbox button, opening Store, and choosing Add to Wish list. The November 2023 notification controls were under Settings > Preferences > Notifications > Xbox Notifications > Store, although later menu labels may differ.

Free Play Days access is promotional and time-limited. A wishlist alert does not make a game permanently free, and eligibility depends on the promotion and applicable Xbox subscription terms. Not every wishlisted title will necessarily receive an alert.
Phone authentication for Microsoft Rewards
The console update added phone authentication to rewards redemption. The announced path was Profile & system > your profile > My Rewards > Get rewards. This is separate from the PC app’s Gaming Services tools; available rewards, regions, accounts, and authentication methods can vary.

The controller firmware was separate
Microsoft’s November 30, 2023 editor’s note corrected a common point of confusion: the Xbox Wireless Controller firmware update was not included in the November Xbox Update and was coming separately. Microsoft described that forthcoming firmware as addressing Shift-mode keyboard-mapping bugs on Elite Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controllers, along with an earlier firmware-update failure affecting some users. It should not be listed as a shipped feature of the November console release.

Who should care about this update?
Windows desktop users
Compact mode is optional and most useful when sidebar space is distracting. The repair tool is more relevant if Gaming Services or game discovery is failing; it does not change which storefronts or games the app supports.
Windows handheld owners
The ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go were named examples, not an exhaustive compatibility list. Compact mode makes the Xbox app easier to navigate on a small touchscreen or controller-driven display, but it does not itself improve handheld performance or battery life.
Xbox console owners
The keyboard, Free Play Days, and Rewards changes are console features. They do not appear as settings inside the Windows Xbox app.

Subscribers may see more value in unread-only notifications and wishlist promotion alerts, but Game Pass is not required simply to install or use the Xbox app. Subscription access and game ownership remain separate, and catalog and regional terms can change.
How this 2023 release fits the current Xbox app
Microsoft later announced broader Windows PC and handheld library integration, including the direction described in its September 15, 2025 update: Xbox on Windows PCs and handhelds. That later work means the November 2023 feature list should be read as a dated release snapshot, not a complete description of the Xbox app in 2026.
