Milk in Cookie Clicker is earned by unlocking normal achievements, then boosts your cookies per second (CpS) through purchased Kitten upgrades. Each normal achievement adds 4% milk; Shadow achievements add none. The color or name of your milk stage does not independently raise production.
What milk does in Cookie Clicker
Milk is an achievement-linked statistic. It does not directly increase CpS on its own: its production benefit comes from Kitten upgrades, which apply multipliers tied to your milk percentage. The Cookie Clicker Wiki describes each Kitten upgrade as having its own multiplier, with the separate kitten effects stacking multiplicatively.
For example, at 200% milk, Kitten helpers contributes a multiplier of 1 + 2 × 0.1 = 1.2, while Kitten engineers contributes 1 + 2 × 0.15 = 1.3. With both purchased, their combined multiplier is 1.2 × 1.3 = 1.56. This is a worked game-mechanics example, not a measured real-world result. Cookie Clicker Wiki: Milk

How to use milk to maximize CpS
- Earn normal achievements. Pursue achievements available in your current game state; Shadow achievements do not increase milk.
- Unlock and buy Kitten upgrades. Achievement progress unlocks kittens, but you still need to purchase each upgrade when you can afford it.
- Check the actual production change. Hover over buildings and upgrades in-game to see their estimated CpS impact, and check the overall Kitten multiplier in Stats. The wiki recommends these in-game displays for evaluating effects. Cookie Clicker Wiki: Kitten
- Compare benefit with cost in your current run. Choose based on the displayed CpS increase and your available cookies. There is no established universal ranking that makes a kitten upgrade the best purchase against every building or other upgrade in every game state.
Milk stages and color changes
As you earn achievements, milk’s stage name and color change. These visual changes do not themselves add production. CpS gains come from the achievement-linked milk level as it strengthens purchased Kitten upgrades, not from the appearance of the milk stage. Cookie Clicker Wiki: Milk
