Hardcore gives a world one life on the highest difficulty; the PS5 release brought a version optimized for the console, with Bedrock cross-play.
When did Bedrock get Hardcore mode?
Hardcore arrived in Bedrock Edition with version 1.21.40, the Bundles of Bravery update, on October 22, 2024. Mojang’s Bedrock 1.21.40 release notes describe the mode’s rules, while the Minecraft updates timeline places it in the October 2024 drop.

What happens in Bedrock Hardcore?
Hardcore is a Survival-style world with much higher stakes: the difficulty is locked to the highest setting, and the player has one life. Mojang’s release notes say, “You can’t turn off Hardcore mode after creating this world.” If your character dies, ordinary play in that world ends; you can continue only as a spectator. Mojang put it plainly: “There are no second chances. If you die, it’s game over!”
In its October 22, 2024 launch notes, Mojang recommended making regular backups while it worked on smaller bugs, including issues affecting multiplayer. That was launch-era guidance, not confirmation that those bugs remain in the current version.

When did Minecraft come to PS5?
Minecraft’s native PS5 version became available on October 22, 2024. Mojang had announced the date a month earlier, on September 19, in its PS5 release announcement.
PS5 performance and cross-play
Mojang said the PS5 version supports greater render distance while running at 4K resolution and 60 FPS. Those are publisher-stated capabilities, not independent performance-test results. The PS5 version also supports cross-play with other Bedrock devices.

Can you upgrade Minecraft on PS4 to PS5 for free?
If you already own an eligible PS4 version, Mojang says you can claim the native PS5 digital version through the PlayStation Store at no additional cost. If your PS4 copy is on disc, you must insert that disc to play the PS5 version. Players without a PlayStation copy can buy Minecraft through the PlayStation Store or a video-game retailer. Availability and upgrade terms can vary by region, so check the local PlayStation Store listing.
