Minecraft commands let you change or inspect the game world: teleport, give items, change weather or time, summon entities, set world spawn, and locate structures or biomes. To use one, open chat and type / followed by the command. Access and exact syntax depend on edition, world settings, permissions, and game version.
How to enter a Minecraft command
- Open the in-game chat.
- Type
/, then begin entering a command. Many commands take arguments—values that determine who or what it affects, or how it behaves. For example,/difficulty easysets the difficulty to Easy. - Use the suggestion list as you type. Press Tab to autocomplete or cycle through suggestions; for commands requiring coordinates, Tab can fill coordinate values. Press the up arrow to recall a previous command.
These controls and examples are described in Minecraft’s September 22, 2023 guide to using commands. Suggestions help with entry, but they do not guarantee that a command or its syntax is supported in every edition or game version.
Enable commands or cheats, and check your permissions

Useful command examples
The following examples are drawn from Minecraft’s September 2023 guide. Treat them as illustrations, not a complete or guaranteed-current command list: check the reference for your edition and version before relying on exact syntax.

Server administration commands
Minecraft’s guide also lists /op, /kick, and /ban in a multiplayer/server context. These can change access or permissions for other players; use them only if you are an authorized operator, and consult the server’s edition-specific reference for required arguments.
Where to check edition-specific syntax
Minecraft’s player guide is useful for learning what common commands do, but it is dated September 22, 2023 and is not a full command catalog. For Bedrock, Microsoft Learn provides a stable command-reference landing page, with links to common and more advanced command documentation, including /execute, /gamerule, and /scoreboard. Confirm that a command’s page and syntax match the version you play; the landing page is specifically for Bedrock stable documentation.

For commands in-game rather than typed into chat, command blocks execute commands as part of the world. Minecraft’s creator article, “Exploring Minecraft Commands”, describes them as specialized blocks for that purpose. Minecraft’s creator tools page says they can be obtained with cheats and used for tasks such as spawning items, teleporting players, or altering game rules. Command blocks are one route; Minecraft’s guide also describes data packs, behavior packs, and server console as other ways commands may be run, with platform differences.
