Choose Minecraft Dungeons II if your group needs the most flexible party setup: its official materials document couch co-op, online play, and mixed local-and-remote sessions, with up to four players. Choose Diablo IV if you want a persistent shared online world with cross-play and cross-progression—and your group is comfortable with its internet and Battle.net account requirements. Blizzard explicitly lists couch co-op on Xbox, not every platform.
Start with how your group will play
The key difference is not which game is universally more fun; the official feature descriptions do not establish that. It is how readily each game fits your players’ locations, platforms, and connectivity.
| Your setup or priority | Minecraft Dungeons II | Diablo IV |
|---|---|---|
| Playing together on one couch | Officially supports couch co-op. | Blizzard lists couch co-op on Xbox specifically; do not assume it is available on every platform. |
| Everyone playing online | Online co-op for up to four players. | Blizzard describes a shared world, cross-play, and cross-progression. |
| Some players local, others remote | Official co-op information describes combining couch and online play, including cross-platform joining with a party code. | The cited product page does not establish a mixed local-and-remote arrangement. |
| Playing without an internet connection | The official co-op page says the game can be played offline as well as online. | An internet connection and Battle.net account are required. |
These feature descriptions come from Minecraft’s launch announcement, its co-op page, and Blizzard’s Diablo IV product page.
When Minecraft Dungeons II is the clearer co-op fit
Your party mixes couch and remote players
If one or more people will play on the same device while friends join from elsewhere, Minecraft Dungeons II has the clearest documented answer. Mojang describes couch co-op, online co-op, and combining the two; its co-op page also says players can invite others across platforms using a party code. The launch announcement gives a maximum party size of four.

You want the option to play offline
Mojang says the game can be played offline as well as online. That makes it the more suitable option to investigate if your group values local play without a connection, though check how the specific platform handles setup and access before relying on offline play.
Your players own different systems
Minecraft Dungeons II is listed for Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Its official co-op information describes cross-platform party-code joining. Check that every player’s device and game version are supported before buying.

When Diablo IV may suit your group better
You want a shared online world and ongoing action-RPG play
Blizzard describes Diablo IV as supporting cross-play and cross-progression in a shared world. Those are relevant strengths if the group wants to play across supported platforms and carry progression between them. Confirm the current platform-specific details on Blizzard’s official product page.
You are considering same-room play on Xbox
Blizzard specifically identifies couch co-op on Xbox. The cited product page does not support extending that claim to other platforms, so check the exact platform listing before planning a local session.

Your group is interested in the Dark Citadel
The Dark Citadel is a co-op end-game activity included in the Vessel of Hatred expansion. Blizzard says Vessel of Hatred requires the base game. This is an expansion-specific reason to consider Diablo IV, not a requirement for every co-op mode. See Blizzard’s Vessel of Hatred page for expansion details.
Check these details before buying
- Platform match: Minecraft Dungeons II’s launch announcement lists Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. For Diablo IV, verify the precise platform and its features on Blizzard’s current product page.
- Online access and subscriptions: Minecraft’s launch announcement says online console co-op requires the relevant platform subscription, sold separately. Diablo IV requires an internet connection and Battle.net account. Check any applicable console online-service requirements for your platform.
- Edition contents: Minecraft’s support page describes what its standard game includes and what an upgrade contains; compare that with what your group wants before choosing an edition: Minecraft Dungeons editions.
- Expansion ownership: The Dark Citadel is part of Vessel of Hatred, which requires Diablo IV. Do not buy the expansion solely on the assumption that it is necessary for all multiplayer.
- Current price and regional availability: These vary by store and region and are not established here. Check the live platform-store listing for each player before purchase.
Quick decision
- Pick Minecraft Dungeons II to investigate first if your main requirement is combining couch and online players, cross-platform party joining, or having an offline option. Its launch announcement says it is available now on the listed platforms.
- Pick Diablo IV to investigate first if your priority is its shared online world, cross-play and cross-progression, or the Vessel of Hatred end-game activity—and its connectivity requirements suit your group.
- If couch co-op is essential, verify the platform: Minecraft Dungeons II documents couch co-op; Diablo IV’s cited official listing specifically names Xbox.
For most groups whose first question is “Can we mix local and online multiplayer?”, Minecraft Dungeons II has the more clearly documented answer. For groups prioritizing Diablo IV’s online world and progression features, make sure the always-online requirement and platform-specific couch-co-op details fit before committing.
