It is often caused by different accounts in the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app—not by a missing purchase. Verify ownership first, then work through the non-destructive fixes below before considering a reinstall or another purchase.
What 0x803F8001 means
The Launcher may display: “Minecraft Launcher license is currently not available for your account (0X803F8001).” Minecraft’s official error guidance treats this as a Windows PC Launcher license-validation problem. Microsoft account, Store, Xbox, or Gaming Services components are failing to confirm that the account has Minecraft access.

This does not by itself prove that Minecraft was never purchased, that your worlds are corrupted, or that you must buy the game again. The account could be wrong in one app, the entitlement could belong to another Microsoft account, a Game Pass subscription could be inactive, or Store licensing data could be stale.
1. Confirm the owning or entitled Microsoft account
Before changing files or paying again, find the account that actually owns Minecraft or provides access through an active subscription. Search for the original Microsoft purchase-confirmation email and check Microsoft account order history. Do not assume that your Windows sign-in, Xbox profile, Minecraft website login, or an old Mojang email is the Store account that holds the entitlement.

#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Outright purchase: the Minecraft product should appear in the purchasing account’s order history.
- Game Pass access: confirm that the subscription is active and belongs to the account being used on the PC.
- Recent purchase: keep the confirmation and order details available, then close and reopen the Microsoft apps so the entitlement can synchronize. There is no guaranteed synchronization time.
2. Use the same account in all three Windows apps
Minecraft’s error-specific procedure requires the owning or entitled account in the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app. Check each location rather than changing only the Launcher.
| App | Where to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft Launcher | Account name in the top-left | Open the account drop-down, choose View all accounts, then Switch account and select the owning account. |
| Microsoft Store | Account icon in the top-right | Sign out if necessary and sign back in with the account that owns Minecraft or has the subscription entitlement. |
| Xbox app for Windows | Account shown in the top-left | Sign out of the wrong account and sign in with the same account used in the Launcher and Store. |
If you recently changed accounts, sign out of all three apps, close them, sign back in, and restart Windows. Minecraft also notes that signing in to the Xbox app before signing in to Minecraft can sometimes refresh authentication; use that as an account-refresh step, not a guaranteed cure. General sign-in guidance is available at Minecraft Support.
3. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with WSReset
A stale Store cache can prevent licensing information from being read correctly. The official procedure is:
Rank #2
- Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
WSReset. - Press Enter or select OK.
- Wait for the cache-reset process to finish and for Microsoft Store to open.
- Open the Launcher and test the game again.
WSReset refreshes Store cache data; it does not uninstall Minecraft or delete worlds. Minecraft lists this step in its 0x803F8001 troubleshooting instructions.
4. Repair, then reset Minecraft Launcher
Windows can repair the Launcher without immediately removing its app data. Menu wording varies slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Open Start and search for Minecraft Launcher.
- Right-click it and choose App settings.
- Select Repair.
- Reopen the Launcher and test your account.
- If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset, then sign in again.
Repair is the less disruptive first attempt; Reset is a stronger cleanup and may require you to authenticate again. This path is documented in Minecraft’s Windows Launcher troubleshooting.
Rank #3
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures

5. Install the Launcher from Microsoft Store
If the existing Launcher installation is incomplete or outdated, install the official Windows version through Microsoft Store, as recommended by Minecraft’s error guidance. You can also use the installation options on the official Minecraft download page. Installing the Launcher does not create a new Minecraft purchase; entitlement still comes from the Microsoft account.
6. Run Gaming Services Repair Tool when Microsoft components are failing
Minecraft recommends the Xbox Gaming Services Repair Tool for related Launcher, update, freezing, and Gaming Services problems. Use it after account verification, WSReset, and Launcher Repair/Reset when Store or Xbox components appear malfunctioning. It is an escalation option, not a guaranteed fix for every 0x803F8001 case. See Minecraft’s Launcher crash and freeze guidance for the supported troubleshooting context.
7. Reinstall only after protecting worlds
Reinstallation is near the end of the sequence because it is more disruptive and cannot repair an account that lacks the entitlement. Before uninstalling, back up worlds and any other saves you cannot replace. Minecraft specifically advises backing up worlds before reinstalling.
Rank #4
- Back up your Java and Minecraft for Windows/Bedrock worlds using the edition’s supported save/export method.
- Uninstall Minecraft Launcher from Windows.
- Restart the PC if Windows requests it.
- Reinstall from Microsoft Store or the official Minecraft download page.
- Sign in with the account confirmed in order history, then test the affected edition.
Do not assume an uninstall preserves every local save. A backup is the protection, not a promise that reinstallation will retain data.

Java versus Minecraft for Windows
The Launcher is a hub for multiple Minecraft products, so identify whether Java Edition, Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock), or both fail. A license problem for one product does not establish that the other edition’s files are damaged. The official error article addresses the Windows PC Launcher rather than Xbox consoles, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, or iOS.
Game Pass entitlement
Subscription access is conditional: the Xbox, Store, and Launcher must use the subscribed account, and the subscription must remain active. Buying a subscription solely to correct a mismatch is not appropriate when your account already owns Minecraft.
Best Value
If the error still appears
- Recheck every possible Microsoft account, including aliases, family accounts, and an account used on Xbox.
- Verify the purchase or active subscription in the account record.
- Restart Windows after signing out and back in to all three apps.
- If several Microsoft games or apps fail, check official Xbox and PlayFab service-status information; Minecraft’s general error guidance treats an outage as an escalation possibility.
- Contact Minecraft Support with the exact code, a screenshot, the affected edition, the account and purchase context, and the steps you already completed.
Avoid registry cleaners, paid “Minecraft repair” utilities, unofficial launchers, and unverified PowerShell removal commands. They are not part of Minecraft’s first-line procedure and can create additional licensing or installation problems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does error 0x803F8001 mean I must buy Minecraft again?
No. Verify the purchasing account or active Game Pass entitlement in Microsoft order history first. Repurchasing is not the first recommended fix.
Can I fix it without deleting my worlds?
Yes. Account matching, signing out and back in, restarting Windows, WSReset, Launcher Repair, and Launcher Reset do not require uninstalling the game. Back up worlds before any reinstall.
Do the Microsoft Store and Xbox app need the same account?
Yes. For this Windows Launcher error, Minecraft instructs you to use the owning or entitled Microsoft account in the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app.
Is WSReset safe?
WSReset refreshes Microsoft Store cache and does not uninstall Minecraft or delete worlds.
Should I uninstall Gaming Services?
Not as a first-line step. Use the supported Gaming Services Repair Tool after account, Store-cache, and Launcher repair steps; avoid unverified removal commands.
