After you defeat the Ender Dragon, its egg appears on the exit portal. You cannot mine it normally: hitting it makes it teleport. To collect it, make it fall onto a torch or slab by removing the block beneath it, or use a piston to move it so it drops as an item. The method is the same in Java and Bedrock, but the number of eggs differs by edition.
How to collect the egg safely
- Defeat the Ender Dragon. Look for the egg on top of the exit portal.
- Do not try to mine it. Striking the egg makes it teleport to another nearby location.
- Make it drop as an item. Use one of these methods:
- Torch or slab: Let the egg teleport off the portal if needed. Place a torch or slab beneath the block supporting it, then break that support block. The egg falls onto the torch or slab and drops as an item.
- Piston: Push the egg with a piston so that it drops as an item.
- Pick up the dropped egg and store it somewhere secure if you want to keep it as a trophy. The warning that it can be lost because it is generated only once for its advancement is community guidance, not an official Mojang statement.
Mojang’s Block of the Month: Dragon Egg, published October 10, 2025, describes both the controlled-fall and piston methods, concluding that the egg “will then drop as an item, allowing it to be collected.”
How many dragon eggs can you get?
| Edition | Egg count described by Mojang | How to get them |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | One | Defeat the Ender Dragon. |
| Bedrock Edition | Two | Defeat the Ender Dragon twice. |
These counts are from Mojang’s October 10, 2025 article and are not a guarantee for every game version. Mojang describes the Bedrock count without calling it a bug.
What the egg does
The egg is an inert trophy rather than an item that hatches in unmodified survival gameplay. Mojang says it emits faint light and teleports when struck; it is mainly useful as a rare decoration or keepsake. The egg was added in November 2011 as part of the final portion of the Adventure Update, according to Mojang.
