A beginner Minecraft house does not need to be elaborate: put blocks between yourself and approaching mobs, then light the dark areas inside. Minecraft.net’s first-night guide describes that barrier as the main purpose of a makeshift house or dugout shelter. For Java Edition 1.18, the release notes say monsters spawn only where block light is 0, with skylight still preventing spawning as before; that version-specific rule is not a guarantee that every mob or situation is covered.
How do you build a simple Minecraft house?
Start with a compact enclosure rather than spending your first night on a large, decorated build. Minecraft.net’s first-night guide, published June 5, 2023, says the goal of a makeshift house—or even a hole in the ground—is to keep mobs from reaching you by putting blocks between you and them.

- Gather wood and make basic tools so you can collect building materials more efficiently.
- Choose a spot and make a small enclosed shelter from blocks you can gather quickly. Close gaps that would let mobs walk directly inside.
- Add a door or another closable entrance, then place a bed if you have the materials and want a way to set your spawn point.
- Put torches inside and around the shelter, especially in areas that remain dark.
Minecraft Education’s first-night checklist names wood, tools, shelter, a door, light, and a bed as priorities. The checklist is a useful beginner sequence, not a requirement to finish every item before nightfall.
Temporary shelter or finished house?
A temporary enclosure is the faster option when night is close: it prioritizes a barrier and enough light to use the interior. A more finished house can wait until you have time to improve its size, materials, and appearance. The official guidance supports the shelter-first approach; it does not rank particular building blocks by measured protection.

How many torches do you need, and where should they go?
There is no single torch count or spacing established for every house in the official guidance cited here. The first-night guide recommends torches but does not specify a universal interval. Instead, look for dark corners and enclosed spaces and add light where needed; a larger or irregularly shaped build may need more placements than a small, open shelter.
Torches are a practical early choice because the guide explains how to make them from sticks and coal. Their purpose here is to illuminate dark areas, not to provide a guaranteed perimeter that keeps every hostile mob away.

The answer depends on the version statement being applied. Minecraft.net’s 2023 survival guide says most hostile mobs appear when the game’s light source reaches 0 in an environment near the player. Separately, the Java Edition 1.18 release notes say: “Monsters now only spawn in places where the light from blocks is 0 (sky light still prevents spawning like before).” That release-note wording is specific to Java Edition 1.18; the sources cited here do not establish current parity across Java and Bedrock editions.
For a beginner shelter, the practical takeaway is to light dark interior areas rather than rely on an assumed torch interval. The cited official sources do not provide a precise spacing formula for all house shapes or a comprehensive account of current spawning rules for every edition, dimension, and mob.
Will a lit house keep every mob away?
No. Lighting dark areas can reduce the chance of hostile mobs spawning there under the relevant rules, but it is not a promise that every mob will stay away or that every situation is safe. Minecraft.net notes that many Overworld hostile mobs burn in sunlight, while illagers, pillagers, and Endermen are exceptions to that daylight behavior. That example is not a complete catalog of mob spawning and behavior exceptions.
Keep the two protections distinct: blocks obstruct mobs from reaching you through an opening, while light addresses dark areas where spawning may otherwise occur. Do not treat a torch layout alone as a substitute for an enclosed shelter.
