Build an automatic sugarcane farm by placing cane beside water, using an observer to detect new growth, and having a piston break the upper stalk into a collector. The design below explains the core layout and collection choices; check the observer’s facing direction and your game edition before building, because redstone behavior is not identical in Java and Bedrock.

How the farm works

Sugar cane grows naturally up to three blocks tall. When a stalk grows, an observer looking at that change emits a redstone pulse; that pulse activates a piston, which breaks the upper cane. The remaining base can grow again, while the drops are gathered by hoppers or carried by water to storage.

Mojang’s official Observer article says observer direction matters and that sugar cane growth is one of the changes observers can detect. It also notes that observers do not detect precisely the same things in Java and Bedrock. In that article, published November 10, 2017, author Duncan Geere writes: “When an observer does detect something, it will emit a strong redstone pulse for two ticks.”

What you need to plan before building

  • Water beside every planting block: Sugar cane can be planted on grass, dirt, coarse dirt, rooted dirt, podzol, mycelium, sand, red sand, moss, or mud, provided the block is directly adjacent to water.
  • A growth detector and harvester: The observer must face the cane growth you want to detect; the piston must be positioned to break the upper stalk. Incomplete piston coverage can leave drops unharvested.
  • A collection route: Choose hoppers, a hopper minecart, or a water stream leading to a hopper according to the farm’s footprint and reliability needs.
  • An edition-aware design: State whether you are playing Java or Bedrock. Observer behavior and some specialized farm mechanics differ between editions.

Build a basic observer-and-piston farm

The exact block coordinates depend on the footprint and edition, so treat this as a component layout rather than a universal block-by-block schematic. Confirm that the observer’s face is aimed at the cane and that its output can power the piston in your chosen arrangement.

  1. Make the planting row. Place a water source so each planting block is directly adjacent to water, then place the chosen valid soil or sand blocks beside it.
  2. Plant the sugar cane. Put one cane on each planting block. Leave room above the stalks for growth and position the harvester to strike the cane above its base.
  3. Position the pistons. Place a piston for each stalk or harvest position so it breaks the upper cane when extended. Check that all intended stalks are covered; a piston that misses a cane can leave its drops behind.
  4. Aim and connect the observers. Place an observer above or beside the cane according to your layout, with its detection face pointing toward the growth block. Connect its output to the piston. Test the facing direction before expanding the farm.
  5. Add collection and storage. Put the chosen collector where broken cane will reach it, then connect the collection point to a chest or other storage.
  6. Test one planting position first. Let the cane grow while the farm is in an active simulation area. Confirm that growth triggers the piston and that every drop reaches storage before duplicating the unit.

Choose how to collect the drops

Collector How it works Trade-off
Hopper minecart A hopper minecart beneath the planting area collects cane through the blocks above it. Useful for gathering drops across a broader footprint; requires a minecart setup.
Hopper line with mud Plant cane on mud and run hoppers underneath to collect the drops. Can avoid a hopper minecart, but uses a hopper for each collection position.
Water stream to hopper Water carries drops toward a hopper and storage. Cheaper and quieter, but drops can occasionally be missed.

Keep production running

Sugar cane grows only while its chunk is loaded into memory. Its practical active range depends on simulation distance, so a farm outside the active simulation area pauses production while you are away. The Minecraft Wiki’s fan-maintained sugar cane farming tutorial, updated September 25, 2026, gives the in-game growth rate as about one block every 18 minutes on average. Treat that as an average, not a fixed timer for each stalk.

Scale up without creating unnecessary redstone activity

In some observer-triggered layouts, one cane growing can cause all of the pistons to fire. That increases unnecessary activity. Repeaters can be arranged to alternate pistons rather than activating the whole row together. For a larger farm, stationary designs are generally simpler to keep operating; flying-machine designs can use fewer pistons and suit larger areas, but they require more complex construction and can break if unloaded while running.

Java and Bedrock: avoid edition-specific assumptions

Do not treat every sugarcane-farm mechanism as interchangeable between editions. The cited tutorial says zero-tick sugarcane farming no longer works in Java as of version 1.16, while it remains available in Bedrock. It also describes bone-meal sugarcane farming as Bedrock-only; fast versions may be limited by collection timing and hopper throughput. These are specialized approaches, not necessary for a basic observer farm.

Common problems and fixes

  • The piston does not fire: Check that the observer’s detection face points at the cane and that its output is connected to the piston. Observer orientation is a frequent source of layout errors.
  • Cane does not grow: Verify that the planting block is directly adjacent to water and that the chunk is loaded within your active simulation area.
  • Drops are missing: Check piston coverage and test the collector. A water stream is less reliable than hopper-based collection and may occasionally miss items.
  • The farm fires more pistons than expected: Your observer wiring may be sending a shared activation. A repeater arrangement that alternates pistons can reduce unnecessary firing.
  • A flying farm stops or breaks: A flying-machine design may fail if it unloads while running. Keep its operation within loaded areas or choose a stationary design for a simpler setup.
