It smelts eligible ores, tools, and armor twice as fast as a regular furnace, but burns fuel twice as fast too—so it does not save fuel per item. Use one when faster processing matters more than the experience you would get from a regular furnace.

Collect the blast furnace from the crafting result. The recipe is 5 iron ingots, 1 furnace, and 3 smooth stone, as shown in Mojang’s blast furnace guide and the Java Edition 18W50A snapshot notes.
If you need to make the furnace first, use the recipe book in your edition or consult a crafting guide. The recipe-book interface differs by edition; Mojang’s crafting guide notes that Java Edition also has the recipe book in furnaces and smokers.

What a blast furnace smelts
A blast furnace is a furnace upgrade for smelting ores and other metal-related items. Mojang describes its eligible inputs broadly as ore blocks, tools, and armor. The exact item availability can depend on your edition and game version, so check the recipe interface in your game for a particular item rather than assuming every item made of metal can be smelted.
Ore drops have changed over time: ordinary mining does not always produce an ore block. In Java snapshot 21w14a, Mojang described smeltable ores dropping raw item forms, while old-world ore blocks and ore blocks mined with Silk Touch remained smeltable. How to use it
- Place the blast furnace where you want to smelt items.
- Put an eligible item in the input slot.
- Put a valid fuel item in the fuel slot.
- Wait for the smelting process to finish, then collect the result from the output slot.
The block uses fuel, but its faster processing does not reduce the total fuel needed per item. The official sources do not give an exhaustive current list of inputs or fuels for every edition and version, so use the in-game recipe and fuel interface to verify specific items.

Mojang’s blast furnace article explains the speed, fuel, and experience trade-offs. Choose a blast furnace when you want eligible items processed sooner and do not need the regular furnace’s higher experience yield.

Hopper automation
Hoppers can move items into and out of a blast furnace, much as they do with a regular furnace. This lets you feed eligible inputs and fuel automatically and collect finished outputs. Make sure the items entering each slot are appropriate for that slot; for exhaustive edition-specific item behavior, check the game’s own interface.

A blast furnace may generate in an armourer’s house in a village, but its appearance is not guaranteed. If you do not find one, craft it using the recipe above. Mojang’s block guide describes the possible village location, while its Village & Pillage release announcement says blast furnaces were added to some villager buildings.
