Minecraft Ice Caves are a new Overworld cave biome documented in Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 3, a Java Edition snapshot published by the Minecraft Java Team on October 6, 2026. They can generate beneath colder biomes. Inside, expect Packed Ice, Calcite, Icicles, and a chance of encountering Strays or Frostbites. The snapshot does not specify an exact Y-level or a guaranteed way to find one, and it does not confirm availability in a full release or Bedrock Edition.
Where do Ice Caves generate in Minecraft?
The Minecraft Java Team describes the Ice Cave as a biome that “can generate under the colder biomes in the Overworld.” That is the location guidance available in the Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 3 notes.
The notes do not provide coordinates, a particular Y-level, a seed, a surface landmark, or a guaranteed search method. Look beneath colder Overworld biomes, but treat finding an Ice Cave as exploration rather than following a confirmed route.
What does an Ice Cave look like?
Packed Ice and Calcite make up most of the biome. Other features described in the snapshot include:

- Ore pockets in Stone and Deepslate; the notes do not give ore rates or say the biome is better for mining.
- Ice Crystals that can occasionally generate on the ground and emit light.
Glow Lichen does not generate in Ice Caves, according to the snapshot notes.
What mobs spawn in Minecraft Ice Caves?
Normal cave mobs can spawn, along with Strays and Frostbites. Frostbite is a zombie variant that appears in cold or icy biomes. Its attack depends on how far away its target is and whether it has Ice Balls:

- Close range: Frostbite attacks in melee and applies the Freezing effect.
- At range: It throws Ice Balls. In Snapshot 3, an Ice Ball deals 4 damage to entities it hits, with damage scaling down with its velocity, and causes knockback.
Frostbites drop Rotten Flesh and Ice Balls. They can stand on Powder Snow and are immune to freezing themselves. Zombies and Husks transform into Frostbites while inside Powder Snow.
How do Freezing and Icicles hurt players?
Freezing
Freezing makes affected players shake and gradually become frozen as they would in Powder Snow; the effect eventually deals damage. Leather Armor protects against freezing, as it does against Powder Snow, but it does not stop Freezing from being applied or remove an effect already applied. Treat it as protection, not immunity.

The snapshot also says that mobs take additional damage while affected by Freezing. For mobs vulnerable to freezing, the damage multiplier is five times. This figure applies to the snapshot’s stated mob behavior, not as a general player-damage multiplier.
Falling Icicles
Icicles can naturally grow up to five blocks long when pointing downward. They grow only where there are no nearby light sources and outside the Nether. Falling Icicles damage entities, with extra damage to entities they land on. Watch both the ceiling and the floor as you move through the biome.

What are Ice Crystals?
Ice Crystals emit light and can be placed in any direction. They break if the block supporting them is removed. The snapshot says they occasionally generate on the ground in Ice Caves; it does not describe a special Ice Cave loot table or give a rate for finding them.

Ice Caves and the details in this guide are documented in Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 3, labeled a Minecraft Java snapshot and published October 6, 2026. The cited announcement does not say when the feature will reach a full release or whether it will appear in Bedrock Edition. Frostbite is described in the announcement as “This frozen zombie variant is well adapted to colder conditions and can freeze players with its attacks.”
