Short answer: you can build a Minecraft-style voxel scene that runs in a browser with HTML and A-Frame, then enter it in an immersive headset through WebXR. The result is a custom web scene—not Minecraft Java or Bedrock, not an official browser port, and not a demonstrated importer for Minecraft worlds.
What this project actually is
The original A-Frame tutorial, Creating a Minecraft Scene in WebVR, was published on December 18, 2015 and created by Donovan Kraeker. It describes a small “Minecraft-esque” virtual-reality website built from a ground plane, repeated grass imagery and block-like forms. The example is best understood as a design-inspired voxel scene authored for the web.
Kraeker wrote that, after experimenting with A-Frame, he had “a simple Minecraft-esque virtual reality website that I could actually enter into and look around in drawvr.com/minecraft/.” He also reported: “I tested it on an iPhone using a plastic Google Cardboard like HMD and an Oculus Rift DK2 and they both worked!” Those were his tests in 2015, not evidence of compatibility with current phones, browsers or headsets.
How A-Frame turns HTML into a 3D scene
A-Frame is a framework built on three.js. You describe a scene with HTML-like elements such as <a-scene>, add entities and components, and can extend the result with JavaScript, DOM APIs, WebGL and WebXR. The current repository example loads A-Frame 1.8.0 from its release CDN:

Build a small Minecraft-style scene
1. Create the page
Save this as index.html. It creates a sky, a camera, lighting and a few colored block-like boxes. A-Frame supplies the scene and rendering setup.

</html>2. Replace colors with textures
The 2015 approach starts with a ground plane and a repeating grass texture. In a larger scene, put image assets in an assets folder and reference them with an <a-assets> block. Use nearest-neighbor filtering or deliberately low-resolution images if you want crisp, grid-aligned pixels rather than a smooth photographic surface. Keep texture files small and reuse the same material wherever possible.

3. Arrange blocks with a grid
Use integer coordinates for block positions and a consistent block size. A JavaScript loop can generate rows, hills or trees from arrays of block types. Keep scene generation separate from interaction code: one function can create geometry, while components handle selection, highlighting or removal.
4. Add behavior only when the static scene works
A-Frame components let you attach custom behavior to entities. For example, a component can listen for a controller or mouse event, change an entity’s material, and update a block list. JavaScript remains available when declarative markup is no longer enough; you do not need to abandon A-Frame’s HTML structure to add game-like interaction.
Run it on a desktop, phone or headset
A-Frame documents flat desktop and mobile modes as well as headset modes. A headset is optional for viewing the scene. Immersive mode requires a browser that implements WebXR and a compatible device; support is a browser-and-device pairing, not a guarantee for every model.

Development and deployment requirements
- For a production WebXR page, serve the site from HTTPS.
- Meta’s Browser permits WebXR on
localhostduring development. - Use a current A-Frame compatibility reference before promising support for a particular browser or headset.
- WebXR-capable examples include desktop, mobile and standalone-headset browsers, but capabilities vary by implementation.
Examples of headset families A-Frame lists include HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Meta Quest, Valve Index, Vive Focus and Apple Vision Pro. That list does not mean every browser on every device supports your exact scene or interaction code.
WebVR terminology versus current WebXR
The tutorial uses “WebVR” because that was the terminology of its era. WebXR is its successor for immersive browser-based VR and AR. Meta describes WebXR as the evolution of WebVR and says WebVR is no longer supported in Meta Browser 9.0. For a new project, use A-Frame’s WebXR path and test the browser’s current immersive-session behavior rather than copying assumptions from a 2015 demo.
What it is not: Minecraft Java or Bedrock
This scene does not establish a Minecraft game runtime, server connection, official license, world-file importer or parity with Minecraft mechanics. It borrows a visual language—cubic geometry, tiled materials and grid-based construction—for an independently authored web experience.

Microsoft lists Java and Bedrock together for PC, but neither edition is a prerequisite for the A-Frame scene described here.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The page is blank
- Check the browser console for a failed A-Frame script or malformed HTML.
- Confirm that the page can load
https://aframe.io/releases/1.8.0/aframe.min.js. - Verify that your camera is positioned above the ground and facing the blocks.
There is no immersive button or headset session
- Open the page in a browser with WebXR support.
- Use HTTPS, or use
localhostwhile developing where the browser allows it. - Check the current A-Frame compatibility guidance and the headset browser’s requirements.
The scene looks flat or blurry
- Test the scene in a normal desktop view first; headset mode is not required for basic rendering.
- Inspect texture dimensions, filtering and lighting.
- Reduce unnecessary entities and large images before adding more blocks.
How to approach a larger project
- Prototype one block, one camera and one light.
- Generate a small grid from data rather than hand-writing every entity.
- Reuse materials and textures, and divide expansive terrain into manageable sections.
- Add pointer or controller interaction after movement and rendering are reliable.
- Test flat desktop, mobile and immersive modes separately.
- Deploy behind HTTPS and retest on each browser/headset combination you intend to support.
The Bottom Line
A-Frame is a practical way to make a Minecraft-inspired voxel world with HTML, but it does not put Minecraft itself in the browser. Treat the 2015 WebVR tutorial as a historical starting point, use current A-Frame and WebXR APIs, and make immersive headset support an optional, explicitly tested target.
