Start with the people and devices you want to play with. Choose Bedrock if your friends play on console or mobile, or if you want cross-play across supported platforms and built-in controller or touch input. Choose Java if you play on PC and care most about community mods, custom servers, snapshots, or older game versions. On Windows PC, Minecraft’s Java & Bedrock bundle includes both editions—but you still have to launch the same edition as your friends.
Which edition fits your setup?
| Your priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Playing with friends on console or mobile | Bedrock | Bedrock supports cross-play among supported platforms; Java cross-play is between Windows, Mac, and Linux. |
| Community mods, custom servers, or older releases | Java | Java supports third-party content, community servers, snapshots, and selecting older released versions. |
| Controller or touch input | Bedrock | Minecraft identifies controller and touch support for Bedrock. |
| A curated in-game content store | Bedrock | Bedrock has the curated Marketplace and supports add-ons. |
| Access to both editions on Windows PC | Java & Bedrock PC bundle | The PC product includes both, and you can switch editions in the unified launcher. |
These are fit recommendations, not a claim that one edition runs better on every computer or is universally superior. For an official overview of their differences, see Minecraft’s Java-versus-Bedrock comparison.
Check platform availability before buying
Minecraft lists Java for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Bedrock is available across Windows PC, consoles, mobile, Chromebook, and other supported device categories. The exact platform list and storefront packaging can change, so check Minecraft Help’s current edition availability information and the relevant store page for your device.
The Java & Bedrock bundle applies to the PC product: Minecraft says a PC buyer gets both editions and can switch between them in the unified launcher. Do not assume that buying the PC bundle grants console or mobile versions; those storefront entitlements are separate.

For multiplayer, match your friends’ edition
Java and Bedrock players cannot join one another’s standard worlds, servers, Realms, or LAN games. Everyone needs to use the same edition. Java supports cross-play among Windows, Mac, and Linux players; Bedrock supports cross-play among Bedrock players on supported platforms. The device matters, but the edition matters too. See Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements and confirm edge cases against the current platform listing.
There can be extra requirements beyond owning the game. Minecraft Help says console online multiplayer requires Xbox Game Pass Core on Xbox, PlayStation Plus on PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch Online on Switch. Players also need matching game versions, a stable internet connection or LAN, and any required account or invitation setup. Platform policies can change, so check the relevant console service terms.

What Java offers for customization and experimentation
Mods, maps, and community servers
Java is the stronger fit if you want third-party skins, maps, gameplay-changing mods, or community-run servers. That openness brings a learning curve: third-party downloads come from outside Minecraft’s curated Marketplace, so evaluate their source and compatibility before installing them.
Snapshots and older releases
Java lets players try snapshots—test versions of upcoming updates—and select older released versions through the launcher. Snapshots can be unstable, so back up worlds before opening them in a test build. Older versions may also be incompatible with newer worlds, servers, or content.

What Bedrock offers across devices
Cross-device play and input
Bedrock is the practical choice for groups spread across supported consoles, phones, and Windows devices. It also supports controller and touch input, making it a natural fit for devices commonly played away from a keyboard and mouse.
Marketplace and add-ons
Bedrock’s Marketplace is Minecraft’s curated in-game content option, and Bedrock supports add-ons. Marketplace content is optional; it is not required to enjoy the base game. Java’s third-party content ecosystem is more open, while the Marketplace offers a more curated route.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Local play and Realms
Minecraft says console Bedrock supports local split-screen play. For hosted worlds, Realms subscriptions are edition-specific: Java Realms supports Windows, Linux, and macOS, while Bedrock Realms supports consoles, mobile devices, and Windows computers. A Java Realm and a Bedrock Realm are not interchangeable.
Minecraft’s Realms page lists the following US plan terms; prices and plan details can vary by region and may change, so verify the current offer, taxes, and terms on the Realms page before subscribing.

A quick decision checklist
- Ask your group which edition it uses. Match that edition if playing together is the priority.
- Check the platform listing. Confirm your device and storefront before purchasing.
- Choose Java for openness and version choice. It suits players seeking community mods, servers, snapshots, or older releases.
- Choose Bedrock for supported cross-platform groups and flexible input. It is the better fit when console, mobile, controller, or touch play matters.
- If you play on Windows PC, check the bundle listing. It includes both editions, but you must still launch the one your friends use.
