Minecraft Launcher Not Opening or Working on Windows 10/11? Fix Black and White Screens

Start with the least destructive fix: restart Windows, install pending Windows and Microsoft Store updates, then use Repair on Minecraft Launcher. If that fails, reset the Launcher, run wsreset.exe, use the Gaming Services Repair Tool for update or Xbox-service failures, verify the same Microsoft account is used everywhere, and reinstall from an official source. A black Launcher window is different from a Windows-wide blank display, which needs graphics troubleshooting.

First, identify which failure you have

• Only the Minecraft window is black or white: follow the Launcher, Store, Gaming Services, account and reinstall steps below.
• The whole desktop is blank, the monitor loses signal, or several apps are affected: use the Windows display steps in the graphics section.
• The Launcher opens but sign-in, Play or updating fails: concentrate on Microsoft/Xbox accounts, Store cache, Gaming Services and licensing.
• Minecraft appears in Task Manager but no window appears: end the stuck process, then repair the app.

There is no officially confirmed universal “black screen” fix. The correct remedy depends on whether the damaged component is the app, Store cache, Gaming Services, account state or Windows display system.

1. Restart Windows and update everything

1. Close Minecraft Launcher. If it will not close, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Minecraft Launcher in Task Manager and choose End task.
2. Restart the PC.
3. Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates and restart when requested.
4. Open Microsoft Store. On Windows 11 choose Library > Get updates; Windows 10 may show Downloads and updates > Get updates.
5. Try the Launcher again.

2. Repair Minecraft Launcher, then reset it

Windows 11

1. Open Start, search for Minecraft Launcher, right-click it and choose App settings.
2. Select Repair, wait for it to finish, and test the Launcher.
3. If it still fails, return to the same screen and select Reset.

You can also use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Minecraft Launcher > Advanced options. Microsoft documents Repair and Reset as built-in recovery options, although labels and availability vary by Windows build: Windows app repair and reset guidance.

Search for Minecraft Launcher, open App settings, or go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Choose Repair if shown, then Reset only if Repair fails. Windows 10 and Windows 11 may use different labels, and not every installation exposes both buttons.

Repair attempts to fix the app while preserving more local state. Reset reinitializes the app and can remove cached data or app-specific settings. Back up worlds before any destructive cleanup; Reset should not be assumed to delete every Minecraft world, but preserving your data first is the safe choice. Minecraft’s update instructions use the Repair-then-Reset order: Launcher update troubleshooting.

3. Reset Microsoft Store with wsreset.exe

1. Press Windows + R.
2. Enter wsreset.exe and select OK.
3. Wait. A blank Command Prompt window is expected; Microsoft says it normally closes after about ten seconds and Microsoft Store opens automatically.
4. Retry Minecraft Launcher.

This is particularly useful for Store-installed Launchers, update loops, a Store that will not open, or error 0x80131500. If Store still does not open, install pending Windows updates, check time/date/region/location settings, search for Microsoft Store from Start, confirm a Microsoft account is in use, and check whether work or school policy has disabled Store access. 4. Use Gaming Services Repair Tool for update and freeze failures

Use the Gaming Services Repair Tool when the Launcher freezes during an update, cannot complete a Launcher or game update, redirects you to Gaming Services, or Xbox-related services appear broken. Minecraft identifies Gaming Services as relevant to these failures: Minecraft Launcher crashes and freezes.

Do not copy old PowerShell registry-removal scripts as a general fix. Microsoft’s documented script addressed a specific 2021 Windows 10 scenario involving 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F, not every modern Launcher problem: historical Microsoft guidance. For current failures, use the repair tool or current Microsoft/Xbox support instructions.

5. Check the Microsoft account and license

The Launcher, Microsoft Store and Xbox app should use the same Microsoft account associated with the Minecraft license.

• In Minecraft Launcher, inspect the account in the top-left.
• In Microsoft Store, inspect the account icon in the top-right.
• In Xbox app, inspect the account in the top-left.
• Sign out and back in if they differ.
• For license error 0x803F8001, verify the licensed account before reinstalling.

Account mismatch can make a Launcher look broken even when installation files are intact. Minecraft’s account and licensing guidance is available in its Launcher troubleshooting FAQ and license-error guide.

6. If only the Launcher window is black or white

Treat a blank Launcher window as a diagnostic symptom, not proof of a defective GPU or missing Java installation. Follow this order:

1. End the stuck Launcher process in Task Manager.
2. Run the Launcher’s Repair option, then Reset if needed.
3. Run wsreset.exe.
4. Update Windows, Microsoft Store, Launcher and graphics drivers.
5. Use Gaming Services Repair Tool if updating or Xbox services are involved.
6. Reinstall from Minecraft.net or Microsoft Store.

Compatibility mode, “Run as administrator,” permanent antivirus deactivation and deleting .minecraft are not universal official fixes. Security software or VPN/DNS filtering can interfere on managed networks, but any protection test should be temporary and protection restored immediately.

7. If the entire Windows display is blank

1. Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. The screen may flicker or beep.
2. Press Windows + P, then press P again and Enter to cycle display modes if output went to another monitor.
3. Use Task Manager to restart Windows Explorer if the desktop shell is missing.
4. If the problem began after a driver update, update or roll back the graphics driver.
5. Use Safe Mode if Windows remains blank.

These steps apply to a Windows-wide blank screen, not necessarily a Minecraft-only rendering problem. Follow Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guide.

8. Reinstall Minecraft Launcher safely

Reinstall only after Repair, Store reset and relevant Gaming Services repair have failed.

• Back up worlds and important Launcher data.
• Record the licensed Microsoft account.
• Note custom Java installations, profiles, mods, resource packs and JVM arguments.
• Do not delete the entire .minecraft folder unless you understand which worlds and settings will be removed.

1. Uninstall Minecraft Launcher through Windows Apps settings.
2. Restart Windows.
3. Download it from the official Minecraft download page or Microsoft Store.
4. Sign in with the licensed account.
5. Test an unmodded installation before restoring profiles, loaders or mods.

9. If the Launcher opens but Minecraft itself crashes

A game crash is a separate branch from Launcher startup failure. For Java Edition, test a new unmodded installation, temporarily remove mods, loaders, shaders and custom JVM arguments, and consult Java crash logs. Do not infer that Java is missing merely because the Launcher previously showed a blank window. Bedrock and Java failures also have different logs and dependencies.

10. When to contact support

Contact Minecraft or Microsoft Support when a clean reinstall fails, authentication or licensing errors persist, Gaming Services cannot install or repair, the same account works on another PC but not this one, the device is managed by work or school, or multiple Microsoft/Xbox apps are affected.

Include your Windows version and build, Launcher installation source, exact error code, whether Microsoft Store and Xbox open, whether Java, Bedrock or both are affected, whether the display problem is system-wide, and which recent Windows, GPU, Store or Launcher update preceded the failure.
