For Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, get comfortable with the controller, use sneak near drops, and pause somewhere safe before managing items. First, check which Switch edition you have: the 2017 legacy Nintendo Switch Edition is not the same game as the current Bedrock version. Nintendo says the legacy edition left the eShop after June 21, 2018, though existing owners can still play and re-download it. Nintendo’s Switch listing describes the current Bedrock game, so its multiplayer details should not be assumed to apply to the legacy edition.

What are the controls for Minecraft on Switch?

Minecraft’s official controller guide lists these Nintendo-controller basics. Button assignments can depend on the controller configuration, so check the in-game options if yours differ.

Action Switch controller input When it helps
Jump A Climb or clear a gap you can safely cross.
Sprint Click the left stick while moving Cover safe, familiar ground faster.
Sneak B Move carefully near ledges; Minecraft says sneaking prevents walking off edges.
Open inventory Y Review or move carried items.
Open crafting X Check available ingredients and recipes.
Open menu Start, Options, or Plus, depending on platform Pause or access options; select “Back to Game” or press the menu button again to return.

10 tips for safer, smoother play

1. Practice the sticks in a safe starting area

Use the two sticks to learn movement and camera control before heading far from where you began. Make a short loop over open, familiar ground and watch for holes; Minecraft’s controller guidance recommends exploring the starting area while avoiding large holes.

2. Use A to jump when the route is clear

A jumps on Nintendo controllers. Use it to handle a small obstacle or reach a safe surface, but check where you will land before moving forward.

Click the left stick while moving to sprint. It is useful for travel across terrain you already know, but avoid sprinting beside cliffs, holes, or unfamiliar ground where a quick turn or stop may be harder.

4. Sneak near edges

Press B to sneak. Minecraft says sneaking prevents you from walking off edges, making it a useful choice when exploring ledges or other dangerous terrain.

7. Pause before handling a problem

Use the Start, Options, or Plus button to open the menu, depending on the platform. Choose “Back to Game” or press the menu button again when you are ready to resume.

8. Adjust controls if the defaults feel awkward

Minecraft says its options allow control customization and provide a way to restore defaults. Check the in-game options for the controls available in your edition; the exact interface can vary, so a specific menu path may not match every version.

9. Check the edition before arranging multiplayer

Nintendo’s current Switch listing describes Bedrock Minecraft and lists up to four players in couch co-op on one system and up to eight over local wireless. It ties cross-platform play to other players using Bedrock. Those figures and cross-play details describe the current listing, not confirmed capabilities for legacy Nintendo Switch Edition; check the edition and its own multiplayer information before making plans.

10. Protect a legacy world before changing editions

If you want to move a world from legacy Switch Edition to Bedrock, start with Minecraft’s official Switch world-transfer instructions. Check which edition and world you are launching after a transfer; the instructions are the right starting point, but they do not establish that every setup is identical.

Is Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition the same as Bedrock?

No. The title refers to the 2017 legacy Switch release; the current Minecraft listed for Switch is Bedrock. Nintendo says the legacy game is no longer sold through the eShop, but existing owners can continue playing and re-download it. Minecraft’s Switch Bedrock information and edition overview provide context on the distinction. When looking up controls, multiplayer, support, or transfer steps, confirm that the page matches the edition you are using.
