Minecraft’s spear is a new tiered weapon in the Mounts of Mayhem drop: it can be crafted from copper, iron, gold, diamond, or Netherite, and its damage rises with the player’s movement speed. Its jab and charge attacks work on foot as well as in mounted combat, with Mojang also pointing to uses with elytra and minecarts. The “15 years” description refers to a new material-tiered weapon since the sword and axe arrived in January 2010—not the first new weapon of any kind.
What is Minecraft’s new tiered weapon?
It is the spear, announced by Mojang for the Mounts of Mayhem game drop. Mojang defines a tiered weapon as one craftable from different materials, with the chosen material affecting its stats. The spear’s listed materials are copper, iron, gold, diamond, and Netherite. Mojang’s Mounts of Mayhem announcement does not provide a complete numerical comparison of the spear’s stats by material, so a precise damage ranking should be checked against the current game rather than assumed.
How the spear’s attacks work
Jab
The jab is an on-foot attack that lets players damage enemies while keeping them at a distance.
Charge
The charge attack can knock an opponent off a mount. Damage increases with the player’s velocity, making movement part of the weapon’s offense; Mojang also cites use with elytra and in minecarts. The spear is therefore not limited to mounted combat.

Why the “15 years” claim needs a qualification
Mojang dates the sword to January 2010, when it arrived with diamonds, sticks, and the crafting system. Its retrospective describes sword damage increasing across materials. Mojang’s axe retrospective also dates axes to January 2010 and describes material-dependent stats. The spear announcement calls it a tiered weapon, so the 15-year framing is a conclusion drawn from that documented history—not a phrase Mojang uses in the spear announcement. Mojang’s sword retrospective and axe retrospective provide the historical context.
The mace came later, but it is a different kind of weapon
The spear is not Minecraft’s first new weapon since 2010. Mojang introduced the mace in 2024, and it shipped in Java Edition 1.21. The mace is built around a falling smash: its damage increases with fall distance, and its recipe uses a Breeze Rod and Heavy Core. Mojang’s materials describe it by its special recipe and mechanic, not as a weapon with tiers across materials. Mojang’s mace announcement and the Java Edition 1.21 release notes document its introduction.

When and how the spear became available
Mojang’s current update timeline lists Mounts of Mayhem under December 2025 and describes game drops as free new content for Minecraft. Nintendo announced that the drop was available for Minecraft on Nintendo Switch on December 9, 2025, and said a free software update was required. The spear is part of the game update, not a separate purchase. Platform-specific release timing can vary; the cited Switch notice establishes availability on that platform and date. Mojang’s update timeline and Nintendo’s Switch notice give the release details.
